This posting is for a beige on tan 1996 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD V6 with a 5 speed manual transmission. truck has 263,000 miles on it. (miles may go up between now and sale, I do still drive it on a non-regular basis).

this 4Runner is a great, great truck. very versatile, huge inside, comfortable and quiet to drive. It is powerful and gets decent gas mileage. Mechanically the truck is excellent. the clutch was replaced in 2006 and is very solid, the two-speed transfer case works great, the differentials and axles are all tight. suspension is good, interior is in good condition, fresh OE timing belt, AISIN water pump, new belt idler, tensioner, spark plugs (the correct two-annode on drivers side and single-annode on passenger side), and new ignition coils. I have had the oil changed every 4,000 miles thus far.

I bought this truck back in July of last year to pull my utility trailer once in a while, but ended up liking how it drove so I have been daily driving it since.

it needs nothing. drive it anywhere.

List of good and bad for the truck;

Good:

* fresh timing belt service with water pump, three idler wheels and hydraulic tensioner (OEM belt)
* fresh water pump service (AISIN OEM) w/ thermostat.

* new correct DENSO plugs
* newer clutch (06)

* newer steering rack (09)
* AC works (so does heat, very well. w/rear vents and separate blower)

* 4WD works great

* engine starts up every time, no odd noises or issues. perfect engine

* transmission is smooth and quiet. no grinds or issues.

* transfer case is good. no issues, noises or odd behavior

* the Yokohama Geolandar tires are in great shape and have 75+% tread

* the truck gets about 17mpg combined. not bad for what it is. 21-23 highway 14-15 city.

* high-end Alpine stereo with iPod plug, upgraded speakers.

* power sunroof

* power rear hatch glass (whole hatch was replaced last winter with much nicer one from a 98 SR5.)

* newer exhaust muffler

* 1 1/4 ” reciever hitch w/ powered tail light converter harness (4 pin)

* WeatherTech® floor liners in the front. best thing ever for a Minnesota vehicle. they’re great.

the things that aren’t perfect:

* the rocker panels are pretty rusty

* the valve cover gaskets leak a little oil (under a half quart between changes)

* one of the two front CV axle boots is starting to age. not cracked yet, but within a couple of years, it’ll need a new boot on it.

again, overall it is a GREAT truck. only reason I am selling it is I picked up a 5 speed BMW X5 out of the blue. had that not showed up, I would happily drive this 4runner all day every day. It is not perfect, being an 18 year old Minnesota truck, but all things considered, it is in nice shape and great mechanically.

exterior 6.5/10 -- (rusty rockers, wheel clear coat is peeling, small paint chips)
interior 8/10 -- solid, a little dirty but really pretty nice.
mechanicals 9/10 -- just the leaking valve cover gaskets and the CV boot.

Toyota mini doc chronicles Tundra towing Space Shuttle Endeavor

Thu, 21 Mar 2013

Toyota has worked up a quick video detailing the brand's involvement in the transportation of the Space Shuttle Endeavour last year. As you may recollect, the California Science Center ran into a hitch when it came to moving Endeavour from LAX to its new home. While most of the route would be covered by a robotically controlled transporter, one portion of the route directed the shuttle over an interstate. Unfortunately, the bridge across wasn't designed to stand up to the weight of the shuttle and its motorized sled.
The Science Center would have to remove Endeavour from its transporter and place it on a lighter, non-motorized sled. That's where longtime Science Center sponsor Toyota came in. As it turns out, the automaker had to prove to the California Science Center that a Tundra could actually tow the massive shuttle, so engineers put on a little demonstration with a stock truck pulling the equivalent weight over flat ground for the same distance. Once the Science Center was satisfied that the Tundra could pull it off, the move was green lit and the rest is history. Check out the short documentary below for yourself.

Local production could improve Toyota Prius' fortunes in China

Wed, Apr 23 2014

The Toyota Prius is the world's most popular hybrid vehicle, but it may take domestic production capabilities for the model to achieve a high level of popularity in China. Japan-based Toyota is aiming to produce an increasing percentage of Prius components in China in order to bring down its price there, Bloomberg News reports. Eventually, the goal is to make all Priuses sold in China in that country in order to avoid the steep 25-percent import tariff. As it is, Toyota sold just 1,400 Prius vehicles in China last year, compared to about 234,000 in the US and 315,000 worldwide. Hindering sales is the fact that the Prius costs about as much as an entry-level Audi in China, where Volkswagen is the country's best-selling automaker. Toyota has been selling the Prius in China for almost a decade but may soon find local sources for the batteries and other hybrid parts for the Prius and Camry Hybrid, Bloomberg says, citing comment from Hiroji Onishi, Toyota's China chief, at the Beijing Auto Show. Part of the problem is that the Chinese government provides less than $500 worth of subsidies for each hybrid sold, compared to about $9,600 for an electric vehicle. While that subsidy may rise as China municipalities take on the country's growing pollution problems, there's lingering concern over spurring sales of a car that's made by competing Japan. Toyota starting making some of its Prius vehicles in China in 2005 but halted production on the second-generation version of the hybrid four years later.

Is 120 miles just about perfect for EV range?

Tue, Apr 15 2014

When it comes to battery-electric vehicles, our friend Brad Berman over at Plug In Cars says 40 miles makes all the difference in the world. That's the approximate difference in single-charge range between the battery-electric version of the Toyota RAV4 and the Nissan Leaf. It's also the difference between the appearance or disappearance of range anxiety. The 50-percent battery increase has zapped any lingering range anxiety, Berman writes. The RAV4 EV possesses a 40-kilowatt-hour pack, compared to the 24-kWh pack in the Leaf. After factoring in differences in size, weight and other issues, that means the compact SUV gets about 120 miles on a single charge in realistic driving conditions, compared to about 80 miles in the Leaf. "The 50 percent increase in battery size from Leaf to RAV has zapped any lingering range anxiety," Berman writes. His observations further feed the notion that drivers need substantial backup juice in order to feel comfortable driving EVs. Late last year, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), along with the Consumers Union estimated that about 42 percent of US households could drive plug-in vehicles with "little or no change" in their driving habits, and that almost 70 percent of US commuters drive fewer than 60 miles per weekday. That would imply that a substantial swath of the country should be comfortable using a car like the Leaf as their daily driver - with first-quarter Leaf sales jumping 46 percent from a year before, more Americans certainly are. Still, the implication here is that EV sales will continue to be on the margins until an automaker steps up battery capabilities to 120 or so miles while keeping the price in the $30,000 range. Think that's a reasonable goal to shoot for?
