1986 Toyota 4 runner.  This is a well-built rock crawler.  It works fantastic off road and pretty decent on the pavement also, though it wouldn't be my first choice as a daily driver.  I'm really going to miss it but a growing family has moved me into a new project off-roader with four doors.

I've never trailered it, always drove it to and from the trails.  I've driven it to both CO and NM multiple times to wheel without issues.  The body is in pretty decent shape.  There is some paint fading on top of the cab.  It has some small nicks, scratches and dents plus AZ pin striping, but nothing major I would point out.  The interior is in quite good shape.  The 22RE engine and W56 tranny are out of an 88 4runner.  The engine runs well.  The engine has about 187,000 miles on it and the body has about 215,000.  There are no leaks anywhere on the truck that I have seen and I just looked it over again.  I've probably put about 10-15,000 miles on it in the last 5 years.  When it's not out on a trail, it's been kept in the garage.  There is NO RUST anywhere on the body or frame.  Just passed Maricopa county emissions 3/28/14.  I have most of the receipts for all the parts.

Lots of stuff listed below and there is probably more stuff I forgot to mention.  Ask away if you have any questions.

Diff armor and axle truss
Extended breather

Rear axle
571 cryo'd gears
Detroit locker
All Pro rear disk brake conversion
Diff armor
Extended breather

Off road
All Pro SAS kit.  5" front/6" rear springs. Bilstein 5100 12" shocks
All Pro front bumper

Advanced Adapters 5.0:1 dual transfer case with Marlin Crawler HD shift springs.  257:1 crawl ratio
Budbuilt dual case crossmember
All Pro transfer case parking brake
Custom rear axle wrap bar built with Johnny Joints
5 -- Pro Comp 17x9 black Rock Crawler wheels.  These are basically new.  I had them installed a couple of months ago and have put very few miles on them.  Never been off road
4 -- 37x12.5x17 Goodyear Wrangler MTR Kevlar tires with 18/32 tread.  New is 21/32.  They have some rock rash but no plugs/patches.  No leaks.  Spare is an old-style 37x12.5x17 MTR with rock rash, no plugs/patches and no leaks
J.E. REEL long travel double cardan front drive shaft
Double cardan rear drive shaft
Ramsey REP8000 winch with 5/16 x 100' synthetic line with safety thimble.
1994 4runner steering box moved forward about 2"
Optima Red Top battery
LCE street header, Denso O2 sensor, Magnaflow cat running through a stock replacement muffler.  All installed within the last few years

Other good stuff
Can-Back soft top frame with a custom built soft top.  Soft top was built by a professional boat upholstery shop with Sunbrella fabric.  They made a few upgrades over the can-back top including a zipper rear window instead of Velcro.  No rips or tears.  No hard top with the truck.  Tailgate has also been gutted.  No glass or window mechanism
FJ80 1" master cylinder with a manual proportioning valve kit from Front Range Off-Road to control the rear disk brakes
Hella H4 headlight conversion

Interior
Front seats out of a mid 90's Acura Integra.  Coverking custom fit neoprene seat covers.  No rear bench seat.  This is where the spare rides
Cobra 18 WX ST II CB radio installed in the DIN space below the CD player.  Coaxial cable run all the way out the back to a CB antenna mount.  All you need to supply is the antenna and tune it
Basic CD player.  Aux-in on the back but no front inputs.  I know the radio works but don't know about the CD player.  It off most of the time cause it's hard to hear much over the tire/road noise at freeway speeds anyway.  Only has two front 4" speakers
Aftermarket custom fit vinyl floor kit
Grant steering wheel

Issues -- Nothing major to report, but this is what I can think of.  Some of them have been around for the past five years I've wheeled it.  Just not important enough for me to look into fixing.
Speedometer reads about 7 MPH fast
Fuel gauge work up until about 3/4 to 1/2 a tank then it drops off fast.  Sending unit probably needs to be changed.  I just use the trip meter
Horn does not work.  Never looked into it
A/C is all there, but does not work.  Never looked into it either.  Never drive the truck in the summer here in PHX

Toyota Prius sets a different kind of Nurburgring lap record [w/video]

Tue, 15 Jul 2014

Scroll down the leaderboards of Nürburgring lap times and you'll see mostly racing cars, supercars and sports cars. Delve deep enough and you'll eventually get to hatchbacks and sedans, albeit the most performance-focused of their kind. But a hybrid? Sure, the Porsche 918 Spyder posted the top time for a street-legal series production car, and it's technically a hybrid, but we're talking about another kind of hybrid here. We're talking about a Toyota Prius.
That's right: the Prius just set a lap record around the Nordschleife. But it wasn't for the lap time. In fact, miles per hour barely factored in (except for staying above the minimum 37-mph average speed mandated on the vaunted racing circuit). No, this was about miles per gallon.
Toyota took one of its Prius Plug-In hybrids to the Nürburgring, topped up the battery, put on a set of low-rolling-resistance tires and put automotive journalist Joe Clifford behind the wheel with a mandate to use as little fuel as possible. After one second shy of 21 minutes, the Prius completed its lap having used just five tablespoons of fuel.

Toyota FV2 Concept is a single-seat mood ring for the road

Wed, 20 Nov 2013

Of all the vehicles Toyota brought to the Tokyo Motor Show, the FV2 might be the most creative. The minimalist single-seat concept is a glimpse at Toyota's idea of a "fun to drive" vehicle in the future.
The FV2 is essentially a pod with a diamond-shaped wheel array (what powers said wheels has not been disclosed), and Toyota says that the technology of the vehicle allows it to gauge the driver's mood and suggest possible destinations. The interaction between driver and vehicle is also displayed in an augmented reality screen on the windshield, and the car can also act as a mood ring of sorts with exterior colors and patterns that can change based on the driver's mood. We can just see it now: "Don't mess with Jim today, his car is red."
Scroll down for a brief press release on the FV2.

Toyota working on cars that hover above the roadway

Wed, 11 Jun 2014

Toyota is one of the largest automakers in the world, but it's not content simply building and selling conventional cars - it's been at the forefront of numerous advancements in ground transportation. It is widely credited with advancing the cause of hybrid propulsion, and alongside Audi and Google, is among the first automakers seriously testing self-driving cars. We could go on, but the news here is that Toyota is reportedly developing vehicles that hover above the road surface instead of rolling along it.
The news comes from Hiroyoshi Yoshiki, one of Toyota's tech gurus, who revealed at Bloomberg's Next Big Thing summer in San Francisco that the company is working on hovering cars - ones that travel just above the road surface, but don't actually fly in three-dimension space.
According to The Verge, a spin-off of our own sister-site Engadget, Yoshiki refused to elaborate on what the project entails and how far along it is. He was speaking along acting NHTSA chief David Friedman, who lauded such advancements as a "great taste of innovations to come," but stressed the significance of more concrete improvements to conventional automobiles - like inter-car communications to keep vehicles from colliding on the highway - as more relevant to today's industry.
