2008 Suzuki Sx4 Touring / Road Trip Edition with AWD and automatic transmission. We got it from a dealer when it had 26k on it and it’s the version with just about all the available bells & whistles. This is an awesome car with no mechanical problems whatsoever and lots of miles left to go - I would prefer to keep it forever but I have twin babies on the way in the Spring and I have given up on the dream of fitting them and my 7-year-old and my wife and me and all our stuff into this car. The Good: - Well-maintained car with regular synthetic oil changes since we bought it. I can provide maintenance records. - Highly reliable - we just it bring it in for regular maintenance … tires, alignments, brakes, etc. - Switch lets you toggle between AWD when you need it and FWD when you’d rather save gas. - Excellent on gas. Fueleconomy.gov says 21mpg city/ 28 hwy/ 24 combined for the AWD but that sounds lower than the reality, probably because this car has the switch… it tacks on a few more for the FWD version. - Super-safe car: Stability control (that works great by the way - you can really feel it and the indicator light comes on when it kicks in), dual front airbags, ABS brakes. - Great in snow (even better in the snow than my old Subaru Forester was). High clearance for a small car. “Lock” button keeps all 4 wheels in sync temporarily for when you need to dig out of snow - that works awesome. This thing barrels right through the plow-in of my driveway. - Surprisingly roomy inside both for your people and your stuff for a car this size. Rear seat folds down (both halves separately) for when you need to haul extra stuff. - 2 remote starters - great for winter mornings. - A/C blows super-cold. - Power-everything: windows, locks, mirrors (and mirrors heat up with rear defrost) - Cruise control - Click into 3rd gear and back on-the-fly... good for hills. - Rear wiper - Really nice sound system: 6-cd player, AM/FM stereo, XM/Sirius satellite radio ready - Audio controls on steering wheel - Tinted rear windows and rear windshield - Clean, never-smoked-in - Just passed NYS inspection in November - Clear title in hand - I will provide auto-check report (similar to carfax) if you need one The Bad: - The accident that you’ll see reported on carfax/autocheck: a slowly-moving car that was trying to park bumped into the open front driver’s side door, just enough to cause it to need to be replaced. The new door (about a year old) works perfectly and there is no residual effect from that. - Somebody sideswiped the car on the driver’s side a few years ago when it was parked. I didn’t bother to report or repair the damage. There’s a small dent with some rust and scraping (see photo) on the rear left fender leftover from that. No frame or wheel damage - just cosmetic. - I bumped a wall during a terrible parking maneuver and the little black plastic lining (not sure what it’s called) on the front right popped off (see photo). I still have it. It comes free with your purchase of the car! The part of that lining that is still on the car has a couple of cracks around the front. - In a separate but equally terrible parking maneuver, that lining got slightly loosened on the rear right of the car. No structural damage. - In a less-than heroic attempt to replace my own rear-right tail light, I managed to crack the red plastic cover. I glued/taped it backed together with a repair kit (see photo). It passes inspection and for about 2 years now it has held fine and all lights are working. - The rear tires are running low on tread (the fronts have a long way left to go). - The tire-pressure sensor is broken so the light for that is often on even when the tires are full. This does not cause inspection to fail. - Center console mini-storage between the two front seats has always been a little loose and getting looser. - My only pet-peeve: the gas tank is too small - it only only takes 10 gallons so you need to keep filling up. The cool thing is it tells you how many miles you have left to drive on your tank. |

Suzuki testing Grand Vitara replacement that is now forbidden fruit
Sun, 02 Feb 2014Suzuki might be dead in the US, but its cars are still thriving in many other markets. Aside from the updated SX4 and a slew of promising concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show, Suzuki is getting ready to launch a much-needed replacement for the aged Grand Vitara, and our spy photographers recently caught the compact SUV testing in Sweden.
Judging by these spy shots, the replacement for the current Grand Vitara - it may or may not retain the Grand Vitara name - will take its styling cues from the Suzuki iV-4 Concept displayed at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show. These cues include the narrow, angular headlights, the sloped D-pillars and we even get a hint of the sculpted rear-wheel arches. We hear that the new Suzuki SUV could go on sale in Europe next year, so we'd expect it to debut later in 2014.
Pentagram aims to cut through the noise of EV sound design
Sat, Jun 5 2021What does an electric vehicle sound like when it goes from 0 to 60, when it signals a turn, when it’s powered down for the night? EV motors have fewer parts and are therefore incredibly silent, which presents safety concerns for drivers who recognize speed by sound and pedestrians who canÂ’t hear an approaching vehicle. In 2019, regulators in Europe and the U.S. began requiring EVs to have warning sounds, but they left it up to the car manufacturers to choose those sounds. Many have taken the new legislation as an opportunity to not only create a branded sound, but also to stir up some marketing hype by enlisting famous musicians to compose the noise of an electric engine. Hans Zimmer created the Blade Runner-esque sound concept for BMWÂ’s i4 electric sedan, and, strangely, Linkin Park is creating EV sounds for BMW. Sound designer Yuri Suzuki, a partner at design consultancy firm Pentagram, recently conducted a research project into the crucial role electric car sound has on a userÂ’s safety, enjoyability, communication and brand recognition, out of which he developed a range of car sounds. Suzuki says that while some automakers have chosen beautiful and interesting car sound designs, chasing celebrity clout is not the way to go when designing the sound behind serious machines. “We really have to design carefully based on the psychological effects on a human,” Suzuki told TechCrunch. “ItÂ’s all about the relation between the human being and the machine itself.” Suzuki says smart sound design can help ease the difference between human and car by providing a shared language. Based on surveys he conducted, Suzuki came up with two new skeuomorphic electric engine sounds as well as adaptive sounds that reflect the time of day and the location of the drive. His engine sounds are reminiscent of internal combustion engine revs, providing both drivers and pedestrians with a recognizable indication of speed increasing and decreasing. The sounds are placed at different pitches: one quite low, like a spaceship taking off; the other a bit higher, like a hovercraft vertically ascending. Audi, Ford and Jaguar Land Rover have also chosen to make futuristic copies of gasoline engines for some of their new electric vehicles. SuzukiÂ’s sound design also includes in-car sounds, like powering on, turn signals or horn honking, that use AI to adapt to the time of day.
Suzuki planning an electric Jimny among EV, hybrid onslaught
Fri, Jan 27 2023Suzuki introduced the larger, five-door Jimny earlier this month, and an investor presentation detailing the automaker's growth strategy to 2030 shows there's more in store. The automaker's mission is to expand its lineup with vehicles that move toward the "realization of a carbon neutral society." This entails Europe, India and Japan receiving five or six new hybrid and/or battery-electric models each. In Europe, the first of Suzuki's five BEVs will show in financial year 2024; when the rollout is complete, it will include an electric Jimny — the silhouette in the upper right. According to Australian outlet Drive, starting from the upper left, the others are a small people-mover, an electric version of the Fronx crossover Suzuki debuted at Auto Expo in India earlier this month, an unknown hatchback, and the retail version of the EVX concept. An electric Jimny would get the dinky 4x4 back to Europe without any classification trickery. The Japanese brand ended export of the regular four-seat model to Europe in 2020 when it could no longer pass EU emissions. It now sends the same model as a two-seat commercial vehicle. Suzuki sells as many as seven models in European markets not including the Jimny, six of them mild hybrids, one a plug-in hybrid. There have been rumors of a hybrid Jimny for a couple of years, and it's predicted the new five-door will get a hybrid option shortly. The investor presentation deck predicted an eventual powertrain ratio in Europe of 80% battery-electric vehicles, 20% hybrid vehicles. We expect that would mean a near overhaul of the European ranges with current models dropping out in favor of hybrids with electric options. What's unexpected is that the battery-electric Jimny silhouette doesn't show on the slides for the Indian or Japanese markets. In Japan, Suzuki expects sales to end up 80% hybrid, 20% EV, the opposite of Europe. The Indian outpost, known as Maruti Suzuki, is the automaker's largest market, and one local outlet said 1,000 shoppers have paid to reserve a spot for the five-door Jimny every day since the truck's debut. The expected powertrain breakdown there is much more varied than the other two regions at 15% battery-electric vehicles, 25% hybrid, and a 60% share of internal combustion made up of a mix of compressed natural gas, biogas, ethanol and "etc." This would definitely be a market for the hybrid Jimny whenever it shows.
