2008 Suzuki Sx4 Touring / Road Trip Edition with AWD and automatic transmission.  We got it from a dealer when it had 26k on it and it’s the version with just about all the available bells & whistles.  This is an awesome car with no mechanical problems whatsoever and lots of miles left to go -  I would prefer to keep it forever but I have twin babies on the way in the Spring and I have given up on the dream of fitting them and my 7-year-old and my wife and me and all our stuff into this car.

The Good:

- Well-maintained car with regular synthetic oil changes since we bought it.  I can provide maintenance records.

- Highly reliable - we just it bring it in for regular maintenance … tires, alignments, brakes, etc.

- Switch lets you toggle between AWD when you need it and FWD when you’d rather save gas.

- Excellent on gas.  Fueleconomy.gov says 21mpg city/ 28 hwy/ 24 combined for the AWD but that sounds lower than the reality, probably because this car has the switch… it tacks on a few more for the FWD version.

- Super-safe car: Stability control (that works great by the way - you can really feel it and the indicator light comes on when it kicks in), dual front airbags, ABS brakes.

- Great in snow (even better in the snow than my old Subaru Forester was).  High clearance for a small car.  “Lock” button keeps all 4 wheels in sync temporarily for when you need to dig out of snow - that works awesome.  This thing barrels right through the plow-in of my driveway.

- Surprisingly roomy inside both for your people and your stuff for a car this size.  Rear seat folds down (both halves separately) for when you need to haul extra stuff.

- 2 remote starters - great for winter mornings.

- A/C blows super-cold.

- Power-everything: windows, locks, mirrors (and mirrors heat up with rear defrost)

- Cruise control

- Click into 3rd gear and back on-the-fly... good for hills.

- Rear wiper

- Really nice sound system: 6-cd player, AM/FM stereo, XM/Sirius satellite radio ready

- Audio controls on steering wheel

- Tinted rear windows and rear windshield

- Clean, never-smoked-in

- Just passed NYS inspection in November

- Clear title in hand

- I will provide auto-check report (similar to carfax) if you need one

The Bad:

- The accident that you’ll see reported on carfax/autocheck: a slowly-moving car that was trying to park bumped into the open front driver’s side door, just enough to cause it to need to be replaced.  The new door (about a year old) works perfectly and there is no residual effect from that.

- Somebody sideswiped the car on the driver’s side a few years ago when it was parked.  I didn’t bother to report or repair the damage.  There’s a small dent with some rust and scraping (see photo) on the rear left fender leftover from that.  No frame or wheel damage - just cosmetic.

- I bumped a wall during a terrible parking maneuver and the little black plastic lining (not sure what it’s called) on the front right popped off (see photo).  I still have it.  It comes free with your purchase of the car!  The part of that lining that is still on the car has a couple of cracks around the front.

- In a separate but equally terrible parking maneuver, that lining got slightly loosened on the rear right of the car.  No structural damage.

- In a less-than heroic attempt to replace my own rear-right tail light, I managed to crack the red plastic cover.  I glued/taped it backed together with a repair kit (see photo).  It passes inspection and for about 2 years now it has held fine and all lights are working.

- The rear tires are running low on tread (the fronts have a long way left to go).

- The tire-pressure sensor is broken so the light for that is often on even when the tires are full.   This does not cause inspection to fail.

- Center console mini-storage between the two front seats has always been a little loose and getting looser.

-  My only pet-peeve: the gas tank is too small - it only only takes 10 gallons so you need to keep filling up.  The cool thing is it tells you how many miles you have left to drive on your tank.

Suzuki, please come back and bring the Alto Works with you

Fri, Dec 25 2015

The list of JDM vehicles we'd love to see imported into the United States keeps growing. But if there's one we could wish for in 2016, we dare say it's the one you see here. It's called the Suzuki Alto Works, and it looks like an absolute riot. The Alto, for those unfamiliar, is a tiny little Kei car. It rides on a 97-inch wheelbase and weighs less than 1,350 pounds, which makes it not only smaller than a three-door Mini, but also about half its weight. All it needs is a 660cc inline-three to pull it around the streets of Tokyo. And perhaps best of all, where the previous Alto adopted rounded, cutesy styling, the new model introduced in Japan a year ago takes a more squared-off, industrial design that looks much better to our round eyes. Suzuki made a punchy little Alto Turbo RS version (which you can scope out in the extra gallery below) that increased output to a still-puny 64 horsepower and 70 pound-feet of torque. And it won multiple awards for its compact, fun-to-drive nature. But now the Japanese automaker has made the Alto even more enticing with the new Works model. It's based on the aforementioned Turbo RS, but packs some key upgrades. Where the Alto Turbo RS was only available with an automatic, the new Alto Works can be had with a short-throw five-speed manual – driving either the front wheels alone or all four. Suzuki also boosted output modestly to 74 lb-ft, improved the throttle response, and recalibrated the steering for better accuracy. New 15-inch wheels are fitted to a retuned suspension with KYB shocks. It's all done up in a gunmetal finish with black trim, red-painted front calipers, and an interior with Recaro racing buckets, steel pedals, red stitching, and a boost gauge that changes color from white to red as it spools up. All of that can be had from only 1,509,840 yen, which may look like a lot, but translates to just $12,500 at current exchange rates. If only Suzuki still sold in the US market, because it does some of the best little hatchbacks around. And the new Alto Works looks like it'd be a hoot to drive.

Toyota will roll out solid-state battery EVs globally in a couple of years

Thu, Jan 11 2024

GANDHINAGAR, India — Japan's Toyota Motor will in a couple of years globally launch vehicles with solid-state batteries that charge faster and last longer, an executive said on Thursday at an investment summit in India. Solid-state batteries promise to dramatically improve the driving range of electric vehicles (EVs), a key element of a strategic pivot Toyota unveiled in June to make up ground lost to Tesla and Chinese rivals, such as BYD, in the EV race. Last year, Toyota and oil refiner Idemitsu Kosan said they would tie up to develop and mass produce all-solid-state batteries, which they aim to commercialize in 2027 and 2028, followed by full-scale mass production. "We will be rolling out our electric vehicles with solid state batteries in a couple of years from now," said Vikram Gulati, the India head of Toyota Kirloskar Motor. It "will be a vehicle which will be charging in 10 minutes, giving a range of 1,200 kms (750 miles) and life expectancy will be very good". Gulati was speaking at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit where one focus of the Indian government is attracting more investments to scale up EV manufacturing capacity in the world's third largest auto market. At the start of the summit on Wednesday, Japan's Suzuki Motor said its Indian subsidiary and Toyota partner Maruti Suzuki would export the group's first battery EV to Japan and Europe — marking the first time for Maruti to export to its parent company's home country. Electric models made up around 2% of India's car sales last year, but the government is targeting 30% by 2030 and India's road transport minister said at the summit he sees annual EV sales in India reaching 10 million vehicles by 2030. On Toyota's plans for solid-state batteries in India, Gulati said the carmaker had various sustainable technology options that would differ based on the country, market and customer preferences. "Right now, for India, flex fuel and ethanol can be a no-brainer right away," he added India's trade department has backed lowering taxes on hybrid vehicles to help the transition to cleaner energy sources, following demands by Japanese carmakers, Reuters has reported. Gulati said the Indian government should consider a carbon-based tax structure for cars, which would make it technologically agnostic and more equitable.  Green Lexus Suzuki Toyota Electric

Suzuki Samurai lives on with new Jimny facelift

Thu, 15 Nov 2012

The Suzuki Jimny is "sold across 188 global markets," but one of them isn't ours. For UK buyers who can buy a Jimny in SZ3 or SZ4 trims, the 2013 model has just been introduced with tweaks peppered throughout the vehicle. First among them is a soft redesign up front, a new bumper, grille and hood updating the face and adding an extra 30 mm to the length of the little SUV. Breeze Blue metallic paint is a new hue but it's only available on the more expensive SZ4.
Inside, customers will find new headrests and ISOFIX child seat fasteners for both Jimny versions, and for the SZ3, new seat fabrics. The 1.3-liter engine with variable valve timing growls out 84 horsepower and 81 pound-feet of torque, returning 39.8 Imperial combined mpg if fitted with a manual, 38.7 Imperial mpg combined in the automatic.
On-the-road prices are £11,995 ($19,016 US) for the SZ3, £12,900 ($20,451 US) for the manual-equipped SZ4, £13,800 ($21,877 US) with the automatic. More information can be found in the press release below.
