Suzuki latest to admit to falsifying fuel economy tests

Suzuki is the latest automaker to be snagged in the broadening scandal of fuel economy falsification. Reuters reports that the head of the Japanese industrial giant admitted that it did not use the proper standards when testing its cars for fuel consumption. "The company apologizes for the fact that we did not follow rules set by the country," said CEO Osamu Suzuki (pictured bowing to reporters), as reported by Reuters. Over 2 million Suzuki vehicles are estimated to be affected. However Suzuki maintains that the company did not intentionally lie or mislead the public or government regulators about its vehicles' economy figures. Japan's transport ministry has ordered domestic automakers to resubmit those figures this week. Though Suzuki withdrew from the North American automobile market nearly four years ago, it remains the fourth largest in Japan (following Toyota, Nissan, and Honda) with particular sales strength in the Kei car segment. Like Honda and Yamaha, the company makes a variety of motorized products, including motorcycles, ATVs, and marine engines. The revelation follows hot on the heels of Mitsubishi's falsification, which broadened in scope from a few Kei cars to every vehicle it has sold in Japan stretching as far back as 1991. The controversy lead to Nissan taking control of a third of Mitsubishi's stock. Prior to that, and on the other side of the world, Volkswagen admitted to engineering its diesel vehicles to cheat emissions tests. Government regulators around the world have launched investigations into numerous other automakers to see how much farther the growing epidemic of falsifying environmental credentials can spread. Meet the Jeep Wrangler's tiny Japanese doppelganger, the Suzuki Jimny

We're all eagerly anticipating the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, but it's not the only two-door, body-on-frame off-roader coming out in the near future. Suzuki has its own on the way by the name of Jimny (no, that's not a typo). Long ago, we received the Jimny here in the United States as the eminently capable, though tipsy, Samurai. The Samurai was followed here by the more civilized Sidekick/Tracker, which eventually took on its original name of Vitara. But overseas, the rugged, truck-like Samurai survived as the Jimny. This newest version looks to retain much of its predecessors' capability. In addition to the body-on-frame chassis, it features a solid rear axle. Odds are that it will continue to offer a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range, as with the current one. We can't quite tell if it will still have a solid front axle, though. Styling-wise, the new Jimny does seem to have tougher, chunkier looks than the current one, pictured above. The corners have been squared up, and hard creases added to the flanks. The wheel wells are now more square and look to have bigger flares. We're also noticing some retro touches such as the roof that isn't flush with the rest of the body. The taillights mounted in the rear bumper are also reminiscent of the old Samurai. As nifty as the little Jimny is, we can safely say that we won't be getting it here — Suzuki doesn't sell cars here anymore. But even if Suzuki were still operating in the U.S., we probably wouldn't get the Jimny. It would probably be too crude for most buyers, and it could be tricky to get it to pass safety regulations. Its tall, narrow shape also could be rollover prone, and Suzuki wouldn't want to go through another rollover controversy. But hey, in roughly 25 years, you can import one of these if you really want. Suzuki iK-2 and iM-4 concepts suggest future style

Suzuki might no longer sell cars in the US, but the Japanese brand is showing that it's still vibrant in the rest of the world by unveiling two concepts at the Geneva Motor Show. The models also debut some the company's future technology and preview the look of upcoming production vehicles. The iK-2 Concept (top) foreshadows a future compact hatchback, and Suzuki is clear that a production version is due to arrive in Europe in 2016. Its styling is a flowing take on the traditional five-door hatchback, especially around the front fenders. More importantly, the model also rides on the Japanese brand's next-gen platform that promises to be lighter, more rigid, offer better efficiency and improve safety. Power comes from the new Boosterjet engine, but despite the speedy name, it's a 1.0-liter, direct-injected, turbocharged three-cylinder. A mild hybrid system is also going to be offered on the iK-2, but outputs for the powertrains aren't specified yet. The more interesting of the pair visually is the Suzuki iM-4 Concept (pictured inset) that imagines a simple, mini offroader, possibly a replacement for the Jimny. It's on the same platform as the iK-2 but with a much higher ride height and quirky styling. The grille and headlight configuration take inspiration from a pair of sunglasses, Suzuki claims. The model also features broad, fairly unadorned surfaces and short overhangs. The whole look just gives the impression of a little mountain goat ready to go anywhere. Power goes to all four-wheels thanks to a 1.2-liter engine and mild hybrid system.
