You can almost make out the shape of the new Subaru Crosstrek
Mon, Jan 23 2017Subaru released a shadowy teaser of the redesigned XV hatchback which will debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show. The car will be called the Crosstrek in the United States. We can't see much from this dark image, but it looks like the sides have more creases and definition than the current model, which has been on sale since 2013 with only minor changes. Subaru showed the XV concept at Geneva last year with wild wheels, sharp headlights, severe side cuts, and prominent off-road-style body cladding. Naturally, we expect a more toned-down version in production trim. Subaru confirmed the new vehicle will offer its Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system (we'd be stunned if it didn't). The Crosstrek will also employ Subaru's new Global Platform, which is more rigid and has a lower center of gravity. These modular underpinnings will be used on all of its next-generation models and debuted on the Impreza. The Crosstreck was called the Crosstrek XV in the US market for several years and also offered a hybrid version, which was dropped. Crosstrek sales in the US increased 7.6 percent last year to 95,677 units, placing it third behind the Outback and Forester in Subaru's portfolio. Related Video:

Tue, Feb 24 2015With snow and ice blanketing large swathes of the United States over the past few weeks, commuting hasn't been easy. Among some drivers, there's an ongoing debate about how much all-wheel drive really helps when it gets slippery and whether rear-drive is as bad in slick conditions as many people think. Xcar Films puts some of those beliefs to the test in its latest video by showing off three very different cars taking on a trio of low-grip challenges. Xcar's picks for the test include the fairly plebeian, all-wheel drive Subaru Impreza, the somewhat plush, rear-drive BMW 120d and the sporty, front-drive Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy. Things start out easy with a hydraulic plate forcing the back end out on a wet skid pad. From there, the tests get really interesting with a slalom on simulated ice, and the cars finish with a high-speed cornering challenge through a soaked turn. While an obvious winner emerges in the end, keep in mind this is hardly a scientific test of grip. For better accuracy, all three vehicles should be wearing identical tires, and the same driver should be behind the wheel of each one. Still, Xcar's examination is a fun chance to see how vehicles react when things get slick. Ford, Toyota clean up in Best Car For The Money Awards
Fri, 22 Feb 2013The U.S. News Best Cars for the Money Awards picks winners by looking at the average transaction price, five-year total cost of ownership, the regard a car has from the automotive press, reliability figures from J.D. Power and Associates and safety data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The result, according to the magazine, is "the best combination of critical acclaim and long-term value."
Ford nabbed six of the 21 categories that received awards this year, the Focus, Fusion, Fusion Hybrid, Taurus, Escape and Edge getting trophies. Toyota and its Lexus and Scion sub-brands took another five, the Tacoma and Tundra owning the two categories given to pickup trucks. The other ten awards were split between Honda with three, Buick with two, and one each for Subaru, BMW, Hyundai, Chevrolet and Mazda.
