This one owner Subaru Legacy has been well maintained.  It was purchased in Houston, TX and has been in Houston for most of its 117k miles.  It has never seen a snowy or icy road.  I was planning on keeping it for several more years, but I needed a pickup truck, which I purchased back in Janurary.  I wanted to keep the Subaru too, but my wife says it must go.

I have replaced the following items within the past 12 months:
  • Timing Belt, Water Pump, Fan Belts, Radiator Hoses, Radiator (October 2012)
  • EBC Sport Rotors with Red Stuff Pads on all 4 (October 2012)
  • Power Steering Pump (October 2012)
  • KYB GR-2 Struts (November 2012)
  • 4 Bridgestone Potenza RE970 Tires (December 2012)
  • Optima Red Top Battery (Janurary 2013)
All transmission and transfer case fluids were replaced with Subaru factory lubricants in Fall 2011 at about 75,000 miles.  Oil was always replaced with Mobil 1 Synthetic or Royal Purple within every 5,000 miles.

Other than the SPT cold air intake, I have not made any modifications to this car other than repairs.  The cold air intake was installed by McRee Subaru (they no longer run a Subaru dealership) where I bought the car.  I have the original factory intake, which is also included with the car.

The sunroof is in excellent operational shape and does not leak.  I attempted to take a picture of the closed sun shade to show that there are not stains due to water leaks.

As with any vehicle that has 117k miles on it, there are a few known issues that I must disclose.  They are as follows:
  • SPT air filter needs replacing.
  • Lighted visor on driver's side is broken.  I disconnected the power so that it would not drain the battery.
  • 6 Disc CD Changer is Broken.
  • Mud Flap on rear driver side is missing.
  • Center cap on rear passenger wheel is missing.
  • Car Fax may show two minor rear end collisions.
The rear end collisions were very minor.  In both occasions I was sitting stopped and someone hit me just hard enough to warrant replacing the rear bumper cover.  There was no damage to the frame or even the steel liner for the bumper.

I admit that the pictures could be better.  I will get some pictures up of the interior soon.  If there is anything specific that you need answered or want a photo of, I will be happy to provide more info.

Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru expand global Takata recalls by 715k [UPDATE]

Fri, May 22 2015

UPDATE: Subaru of America spokesperson Michael McHale tells Autoblog that the company is recalling 78,000 Imprezas from the 2004 and 2005 model years in the US. This is a national expansion of the company's previous regional recall for the Impreza. The Takata airbag inflator recall just keeps growing. The latest expansion encompasses 715,000 vehicles from Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru. Many of the affected models are in Japan. The largest expansion from these three automakers comes from Mitsubishi. According to Reuters, the company is adding 100,000 vehicles in Japan and 412,000 outside of the country without identifying any specific regions. Mazda is issuing safety campaigns for 112,000 vehicles in Japan, and some of these include models that the company produces there for Mitsubishi and Nissan, according to Reuters. In statement to Autoblog (embedded below), Mazda said that it is still evaluating the situation in terms of a possible effect on the US. Finally, Subaru is calling in 91,000 Imprezas in Japan. At this time, it isn't clear whether Mitsubishi's or Subaru's expansions affect the United States, but Autoblog has reached out to them for more information. According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, exposure to moisture can cause the propellant in these inflators to ignite too quickly and cause these dangerous ruptures. Takata has also been investigating the problem. Related Video: Mazda statement "We are aware of the NHTSA/Takata announcement, and are evaluating the effects of it on Mazda. As soon as we have had a chance to fully evaluate the situation – number of vehicles affected, age of those vehicles, where they're located, etc. – we will be able to share those details."

Ever wonder how to really pronounce Japanese automaker names?

Thu, 25 Sep 2014

People tend to get very set in their ways when it comes to the pronunciation of words. Just look at the endless debates over whether or not to say the final 'e' in Porsche (which you should in terms of correct German enunciation). Or the argument about whether to follow the British convention and give the 'u' in Jaguar a special delivery or to say the 'ua' diphthong as more of a 'w' sound, as usually happens in the US.
This short video doesn't answer either of those automotive questions, but it does allow a native Japanese speaker to demonstrate the accepted pronunciations for several, major automakers from the country. One benefit is that it clears up the occasional debate over whether Nissan should be said with a long or short 'i' sound. Also, listen closely to how the female host says Mazda as Matsuda, the way it's actually said in the language. Even if this doesn't change the way you enunciate these brands, at least now you know the accurate way in Japanese.

Subaru Legacy Concept has us getting our hopes up

Wed, 20 Nov 2013

It happens all the time. We get excited about a really attractive Subaru concept, and then the production car comes out and, well, "disappointed" isn't a strong enough word. (Compare that hot Impreza concept to the final production car.) So while we're hopeful that this new Legacy concept previews something sleek for Subaru, allow us to be fully on record as not getting our hopes up.
Anyway, let's talk about how good this car looks. From the front, comparisons to the Buick Regal GS are warranted, but from all other angles, it has a very four-door coupe-like shape. The concept rides on 21-inch wheels with bulging wheel arches that Subaru says hints at the car's all-wheel-drive system (standard Subaru fare, BRZ aside).
As for what exactly this concept previews, the safe guess is, of course, the next-generation Legacy midsize sedan. And while we'll keep our fingers crossed for a sweet-looking production sedan to come out of Fuji Heavy in the near future, it's safe to say we're still skeptical.
