The Toyota GT86 Shooting Brake Concept is real
Fri, May 6 2016As a two-door wagon the shooting brake exists at the unusual but captivating intersection between practicality and sportiness. This Toyota GT86 Shooting Brake Concept is no different – it's a standard GT86, with no mechanical alterations save the grafted-on wagonette roof and hatch. It's fully functional, too, having turned some laps on Toyota's test tracks. It even has the blessing of Tetsuya Tada, the father of the Toyota 86 and its Subaru BRZ and (now rebadged) Scion FR-S, who's been protective of the original GT86 concept to the point of strenuously resisting any serious power upgrades. This isn't the first shooting brake concept we've seen from the Toyobaru twins, but it's the first Toyota-badged one. Subaru brought the Cross Sport Design Concept to the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. So how did the GT86 Shooting Brake Concept happen? The story, as Toyota tells it, involves the company's Australian design team. They created a 1/4-scale clay model of the shooting brake, and showed it to Tada when he visited in late 2014. He was so impressed, Toyota says, that he had his hand-picked craftsman in Japan bring the idea to full-scale fruition. The Australian design team, in the outdoor-loving spirit of their country, immediately thought that the longer roof would be perfect for carrying surfboards and other unwieldy sports equipment. And it would be. Meanwhile, Tada and the rest of the Toyota corporation want to tamp down expectations. It's a design study, the company says, and it's just "testing the waters." Toyota won't rule anything out, and Mazda recently surprised everyone with the MX-5 RF's unusual and attractive targa model. Maybe in a world where Mazda felt confident enough to introduce the RF, Toyota can be daring enough to bring a sporty wagon to the masses. We can hope, and maybe if we all make enough noise together Toyota will make it a reality. Mark Higgins sets new Isle of Man record in Subaru STI
Wed, 04 Jun 2014Subaru has done it again, setting a new four-wheel lap record around the 37.75-mile TT Mountain Course at the Isle of Man. Mark Higgins in a 2015 WRX STI rocketed through the country roads at an average speed of 116.40 miles per hour to circle the track in 19 minutes, 26 seconds, thereby beating his previous record of 19 minutes 56.7 seconds from 2011 in an STI.
According to Subaru, speeds during the lap ranged from as little as 30 mph to over 160 mph. The STI was mostly stock with the only major mechanical change being different springs and dampers to handle the course's famous bumps at such sustained high speeds. For safety, it also had a rollcage, racing harness, and fire suppression system.
"It was quite a lap we did today and I am really happy to have another record in the bank. The chassis of the new car is so much better it really allowed me to pick up time in each sector in the more technical parts of the course," said Higgins about the run in the Subaru.
The 2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow is, wait for it, yellow
Mon, Jun 13 2016Scion is fading fast, but it seems Subaru learned a thing or two from the Toyota offshoot during their short time together. This new BRZ, with its oddly punctuated and not very subtle name, continues a line of special-edition Subarus that pair special paint and interior trim with black accents. It's called the Series.Yellow, and Subaru will build 500 of them for 2017. The Series.Yellow starts with the mildly updated 2017 BRZ and stacks the new Performance Package ( Brembo brakes, Sachs dampers, black 17-inch wheels) on top of the Limited trim. The Series.Yellow will come with the six-speed manual only, as it's required to get the Performance Pack. That also means it has the new 205-hp boxer four and a different final-drive ratio to go along with it. Aside from the yellow paint, exterior differences include black Subaru and BRZ badging, and a black surface for the rear spoiler. The interior gets it some yellow as well, with stitching on the seats, door panels, dash, steering wheel, floor mats, and shifter and e-brake boots. The interior grab handles are yellow-ized, and there are yellow patches at the top of the seat bolsters. Oh, and the seats have Alcantara inserts, but those aren't yellow. As the second in the Series series, it follows in the footsteps of the BRZ Series.HyperBlue from 2016. There's also precedent for special yellow Subarus, as 1,000 XV Crosstrek Special Editions from 2015 got yellow paint and black cladding. Yellow!
