179k miles and counting, 5-speed manual transmission, never smoked in, no pets, meticulously maintained w/ records & just completed an extensive 180k maintenance covering everything from valve cover gaskets to a complete brake job. It should require no major service until 210k. This was supposed to be my 'forever' car, so I was maintaining and modifying very carefully. However, personal reasons force a sale. Clean title, three keys & two remotes, all manuals in hand.

This car has been my winter trip car and poor-weather daily driver (I commute via motorcycle) for the last several years. Most miles are highway/interstate miles. It has never let me down in any situation and I am committed to performing all maintenance on or before schedule. This WRX has been modded to produce a singular end result: a reliable, practical, and fun-to-drive car for someone who can have just one car. Most mods target suspension, practicality, and longevity. Please see list below.

There are some issues that affect most Subarus and some that affect only this model and year. These include head gaskets, wheel bearings, and transmissions. I've done my best to prevent these types of failures through driving choices and maintenance. Subaru 2.0L turbo motors are not as prone to head gasket failures as the N/A 2.5L, but it doesn't hurt to be safe. Used oil analyses (Blackstone) and compression tests (very strong compression) show a very healthy motor with no oil/coolant mixing and I always use Subaru Long-Life Coolant with Subaru Coolant Conditioner. I've recently replaced the passenger rear wheel bearing and the passenger front wheel bearing with hubs & ball-joints from a parted 2007 WRX with less than 10k miles. This wheel bearing should far outlast any aftermarket bearing. This 2002 WRX has the 'BA' transmission, which is stronger than the earlier 'AA' transmissions. Additionally, I never drop the clutch, shift slowly and carefully, use synthetic transmission oil, and have maintained close-to-stock power levels. All open recalls (wagon door stays, fuel lines, control arms) have been performed at Koppel Subaru in Queens, NY.

Interior: 8.5/10. Some scuffs in the rear, some usual Subaru rattles, and some wear normal for a 180k mile car. Otherwise, it is very clean.

Exterior: 9/10. It's hard to keep a car perfect in NYC, but condition is certainly well above average and the paint still shines. I had the trunk keyhole shaved when someone tried to break the lock cylinder.

Mechanical: 9.5/10. Motor is very strong with compression tests showing less than 3% difference between cylinders. UOAs show excellent motor condition. Transmission is in excellent shape, all synchros intact w/ smooth shifts. Suspension in great shape with lots of life left, and the chassis is very solid.

Maintenance

I have a large spreadsheet of all the maintenance done to the car in the last several years along with dates, mileage, costs, mechanic, part numbers, etc. I did much of the maintenance myself as I like the work to be done a certain way, with specific parts. However, for items I am unable to perform, I turn the car over to a Subaru specialist.

Subaru recalling almost 634,000* CUVs, sedans for possible puddle light short

Thu, 03 Jan 2013

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a massive recall campaign today for some of the more popular Subaru models due to defective puddle lights that could short out and possibly lead to smoke and/or fire.
(*)While the recall notice lists a total of 633,842 Forester, Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models from various model years, Automotive News is reporting that there are only 53,999 units actually equipped with the defective lights, but Subaru is having to make the massive recall since it is unable identify which vehicles have the lights.
The problem with the 2009 through 2012 Forester, 2006 through 2012 Tribeca and the 2010 through 2011 Legacy and Outback is that the puddle lights mounted under the door mirrors can collect water or moisture, which can lead to the short. To fix the problem, Subaru is adding an extra fuse to the wiring harness as a part of the recall that will go into effect next month. For Forester owners, this is the second major recall in less than a year following the 275,000 units that were afflicted with faulty rear seatbelts.

2013 Subaru WRX STI Special Edition

Wed, 05 Jun 2013

Despite my best efforts to convince myself otherwise, I think I'm finally getting too old for this car. I remember the days when I would go ga-ga over the winged Subaru WRX STI sedan, my inner boy racer caring only about its turbo thrills and not taking into account things like price, packaging or interior quality/comfort. Even now, as someone who generally appreciates offbeat color choices, I'm having a hard time getting behind the Tangerine Orange paint of this Special Edition tester, a unique version of the STI sedan limited to just 100 cars. (West Coast Editor Michael Harley recently spent time in the Special Edition WRX sedan, which will see a production run of 200 units.)
To give it The Full Halloween, this limited-edition Subie comes with black accents on its mirrors and fender badges, not to mention black alloy wheels and special graphics on the rocker panels. Special Edition cars also come standard with foglights, and there are orange accents found throughout the interior. All in, this flashier Subaru will set you back $34,795 plus $700 for destination, or $500 more than the standard version.
No, $35,000 isn't chump change, and many will argue that there are far better vehicles to be had at that exact same price point. And while my aging brain is beginning to think more toward that side of the rational thought spectrum, there's still a lot about this car that makes my more youthful self endlessly happy.

Upcoming Subaru WRX STI rumored to get hybrid drivetrain

Tue, Dec 8 2015

Subaru might electrify the next-gen WRX STI. According to a rumor from Motoring in Australia citing an unnamed Subie insider, the brand's engineers reportedly have two hybrid systems under development for the future model. The move would allow the STI to boost power output and improve fuel economy and lower emissions to keep up with US regulations. According to Motoring's speculation, the next STI might use an electric motor at the back to power the rear axle and an upgraded version of the FA20 turbocharged 2.0-liter at the front. A new dual-clutch six-speed gearbox would help the power get to the road, and the total system could allegedly offer around 322 horsepower versus 305 hp from the current US model. This rumor also claims the next-gen STI would continue as a sedan when it arrives in 2017. Like previous iterations, the four-door will share underpinnings with the Impreza, which will mean a move to Subaru's new modular platform. The standard hybrid might only be the beginning of electrification for the future STI. Motoring's source also claims the company has a plug-in hybrid variant under development, but it might not debut until the 2018 Tokyo Motor Show. A hybrid STI could be exciting, but until there are solid facts, this rumor joins a long history of powertrain speculation about the high-performance Subaru. In 2008 and 2010, reports emerged about a diesel version, but it never appeared. We once even heard that the current-gen WRX might boast an electric turbo.
