Reasonable offers welcome

I've decided to part with my beloved Subaru.  The engine runs like a champ, but the rust on the rear of the frame has progressed to a point where it won't pass inspection.  The main problem lies around the back wheels (of course), notably where the rear axle bolts to the frame.  The bolts may break loose while driving, I was told by my mechanic, so it is currently unsafe to drive.  This may also be causing some movement / flex / alignment issues while driving, which has been causing one of the rear wheels to ride primarily on the inside of the tread (inside being the side closer to the center of the car), as evidenced by the wear pattern.

I've done my best to show the current condition of the body through pictures.

On the positive side, I recently took the car on a 5,000 mile road trip without a hitch... it was completely reliable the entire way.  It has also been reliable since returning, and has never had an issue with starting.  Recent work includes new battery, new plugs, new air filter, new MAF sensor, new BPT transducer, new EGR solenoid, upgraded spark plug wiring, 12v line with in-line fuse run through firewall for amplifier, and new gasket for EGR valve.  Also, about 20k miles back, a new timing belt and complete front axle was replaced.  The EJ22 engine was Japan assembled, and shows no signs of head-gasket issues... most likely it has lots of life left.

When returning from a long trip about 5 months ago, I gauged my gas mileage on the highway when averaging between 60 and 65... 10 gallons of gas got me a little over 300 miles, or roughly 30 miles per gallon.

I just diagnosed and fixed a check engine light, which ended up being a bad back pressure transducer (which was replaced)... so there are no check engine lights, and the computer reads 'clear' as shown in the picture of my OBDII scanner.

Other problems to note are a dent (not a hole) in the gas tank, a hole or air leak in the filler tube, and torque bind when turning the wheel fully to the left or right from a stopped position (as in, for example, when navigating through a parking lot).  The heat-shield rattles when initially turning the car on, which goes away after a minute as the engine warms up.  Also, the light on the automatic 'shifter' needs to be tapped to come on (the light that illuminates 'Reverse, Neutral, Drive, etc.).  I have used exhaust repair kits on some of the seals and on the muffler / CAT housing -- this was done a year ago and seems to be holding up well up to this point.  The tires leak slowly, and some have more tread than others.  One tire needs to be replaced immediately, for which I have the replacement already (which is included and pictured).  Soon two others should be replaced as well.

The interior isn't in terrible shape, but not immaculate either.  I usually used the back to store things, transport things, and/or sleep on road trips with the seats down.

Well, I've tried to describe all known issues adequately here.  Since I was told by my mechanic that this won't pass inspection due to the rear frame rust, I am selling this as a parts car.  I will not be liable for any issues that the buyer may encounter that were not described here, and will not accept returns... because any issue that was not listed here is outside of my knowledge, the buyer accepts full responsibility for this and the possibility of any unknown issues surfacing after purchase.  Having said that, I am a very honest seller, mechanically inclined, know the car well, and have, again, done my best to represent it accurately.

This could be a good mechanics' special... for someone who wants a good engine and spare parts, or perhaps knows how to weld and can repair the rusty areas of the frame.

Thanks for looking.

Pontiac Aztek enjoys rebirth thanks to Millennials

Fri, Sep 11 2015

Apparently, Millennials – those between 18 and 34 – aren't afraid to look different on the road, and they like performance, too. A new study by Edmunds is discovering some surprising vehicle choices by this group. Among them, the long-derided Pontiac Aztek is getting a new day in the sun with 25.5 percent its buyers coming from this generation in the first half of 2015. For comparison, Millennials represent an average of 16.8 percent of used car purchases. The Aztek is slowly shaking its reputation as a styling abomination, which seems tied to its appearance on Breaking Bad. The show premiered in 2008, and the Pontiac has been on this list for four of the past five years, according to Edmunds. It even led the pack in 2010. A recent Retro Review from MotorWeek also showed that the crossover wasn't always so hated. While it's still a shock to see the Aztek on any popularity list, the awkward-looking crossover only ranks sixth among Millennials. The vehicle with the biggest portion of buyers from the generation is the Dodge Magnum with 27.6 percent. According to Edmunds, the bluntly styled wagon is especially popular in Detroit and Chicago. The Chrysler Pacifica comes in a close second at 27.3 percent. When it comes to used cars, value and utility appear to trump just about anything else for many Millennial buyers," Edmunds analyst Jeremy Acevedo said in the report. Young buyers aren't afraid of sporty rides, either. The Subaru WRX has 26.4 percent Millennial buyers to rank third place on the list, and the Volkswagen R32 takes fifth at 25.7 percent. Just a few points lower in seventh place is the Nissan GT-R at 25.4 percent, and the final performance machine in 10th place is the Lexus IS-F with 24.7 percent. Related Video:

2016 Subaru WRX and STI get new safety, tech equipment

Fri, Apr 24 2015

The Subaru WRX and STI were just thoroughly revamped, but the Japanese brand has decided to tweak the offerings slightly for the 2016 model year. The changes include some upgraded safety systems, and as a possible blasphemy to fans, a smaller wing is being offered on the STI. The latest versions should hit dealers in the summer, but prices grow slightly. A base WRX is $300 more than last year at at $26,595 (plus $795 destination on all of them), and the cheapest STI is $34,695, a $200 increase. The WRX is undoubtedly fun to drive already, but the Premium and Limited trims now ride on standard 18-inch wheels with summer performance tires. For added in-car entertainment, Subaru is giving all models, including the STI, its 6.2-inch Starlink infotainment system that includes a rearview camera. Vehicles with navigation get a seven-inch version. Driving a WRX might be just a little safer too because Subaru is offering its EyeSight system with adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist as an option on the Limited with the CVT. It's packaged with things like the nav system, upgraded radio, keyless start, and steering-responsive foglights for $4,095. The same trim with the six-speed manual gets a similar bundle but replaces some of the safety tech with just blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert for $3,100. In perhaps the most contentious change, the STI Limited trim is now available with a tiny, trunk lip spoiler as a no-cost option. Seeing the aggressive sedan without the big wing certainly looks odd in photos, and it's still available for buyers who want it. Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ successor canceled?

Tue, Jan 29 2019

Rumors indicate that the Toyota 86 is done for. Japanese Nostalgic Car is quoting Japanese sources as saying Toyota and Subaru have parted ways regarding the 86 and that the current car's replacement is off the table. According to JNC, the Japanese magazine Best Car is readying a report that the 86/BRZ successor has been canceled. JNC also considers the fact that in Japan, there will be a four-cylinder, 197-horsepower version of the new Supra, ready to continue where the 86 will leave the market. Back in 2016 the automaker seemingly confirmed that a replacement for the rear-drive car was under development, but plans can change and with a cheaper Supra version for sale in markets outside the U.S., we have to wonder if the 86 replacement has been shelved. The 86, while balanced, has only received mild enhancements and not a lot of extra power during its near-decade long time on the market, and it isn't such a strong seller that it would necessarily merit the effort of Toyota developing a successor on its own, particularly without the help of a partner like Subaru or BMW. At the same time, Autocar quotes Toyota boss Akio Toyoda on the Supra: "At the end of the day, is there anything better than a tight rear-wheel-drive sports car? I hope this won't be the last Toyota sports car you see from us in the future." While that is far from a solid statement of Toyota's future intent, it paves the way to offerings below the Supra, and shows how much the company boss cares about driver involvement. There is a distinct possibility that the company will re-introduce the MR2 as an electrified, rear-drive sports car – which could still be a joint venture with Subaru, as Japanese Nostalgic Car theorizes. Whatever's in the pipeline – and we hope there is something in the pipeline – it seems Toyota's heart is in the right place: driving the rear wheels. Related Video:
