======THE LONG VERSION=======

First owner bought in Baltimore and did all required service at the Owings Mills dealership. Sold to me around 62k miles all stock.

I did the following work and modifications:

- STI brake booster and master cylinder
- WRX/ Saab 9-2x steering rack (faster steering ratio and linear instead of progressive). Installed with new urethane rack bushings
- STI rear sway bar with STI endlinks
- Koni yellow adjustable sport dampers with STI springs (adjustable rebound)
- Continental DWS tires with plenty of tread left. D, W, and S letters still showing on all tires.
- Transmission and differential fluids Subaru synthetic Extra-S
- Regular oil changes with synthetic and Wix oil filters.
- Always premium gas.
- Mishimoto intercooler hoses and all aluminum fully welded radiator
- Morimoto HID bixenon projector retrofit (not just xenon bulbs put into stock housing). Yellow/white 4300k bulbs, not purple or blue.

New Parts within the last 1000 miles:
- 2 front CV axles
- 2 front ball joints
- left tie rod
- New drivers window motor
- new battery
- repaired leaking A/C line - fresh recharge

At ~85k miles the turbo bearings began to give out, but was caught quickly. I removed the stock oil screens in the feed line and installed a good used WRX turbo. There is a small exhaust leak at the wastegate linkage pivot pin that causes the turbo to be audible as it spools (think WRC car). This will not cause any mechanical issues, CEL, etc because is on the exhaust side and downstream from the turbine

Also replaced gaskets,  oil drain tube, radiator hoses, and intercooler tubes with Mishimoto silicone tubes.

Currently the only known issue I can think of is a subtle thumping noise at low speeds. It sounds like a CV axle so recently I replaced the front axles, but the problem did not go away. I have driven it like this for over 1.5 years and it has always been fine and it is safe. I also checked over all suspension an drivetrain components and everything feels tight with no slop or play. Unfortunately I don't have any more time to diagnose it further.

2015 Subaru Legacy, Outback crash their way to IIHS Top Safety Pick+ ratings [w/video]

Wed, 20 Aug 2014

The Subaru Legacy and Outback are the latest vehicles to be awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's most prestigious safety title, Top Safety Pick+.
As we've explained many times before, this only applies vehicles that can score an "Acceptable" or "Good" rating on the five IIHS crash tests and earn at least a "Basic" rating for crash prevention systems.
In the Legacy's case, it totally aced IIHS's testing, earning "Good" scores on the small overlap, front moderate overlap, side impact, roof crush and rear impact tests, while also bringing home the top "Superior" rating for its optional EyeSight system.

Are you the Subaru WRX Concept for New York?

Tue, 26 Mar 2013

When Subaru dropped a hint about bringing an "all-new performance concept car" to the New York Auto Show this year, we immediately started hoping and praying that a conceptual iteration of the next WRX was in the offing. Looks like that might have paid off. While no official word has yet been written or uttered from Subaru, a French website called Blog Automobile has released a gallery of images that would seem to spill the beans about the WRX Concept.
If the leaked images are correct - and they look awfully complete and well done if they're not - WRX styling is taking a turn for the handsome. The sleek sedan in these images has all of the cues that we've come to expect from our rally-ready Imprezas: a dominating hood scoop and very wide stance with beefy wheels, and seems to miss only the rear wing to fit the perfect WRX stereotype. (And, yes, it should have gold wheels.)
There's no press release to be found, but the source is citing specifications as if it knows what it's talking about. We're told that 275 to 300 horsepower are the likely output of the turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine, and that brakes with ventilated discs and six-piston calipers are there to haul the all-wheel-drive Scooby down from speed. If our earlier reporting is correct, we might expect to find an electric turbo under that imposing hood, too.

Subaru WRX S4 gets big power bump in Japan

Mon, 25 Aug 2014

A month after originally teasing it, Subaru is finally unveiling its WRX S4 model for Japan. It's a bit more than just a plush take on the sport sedan, because Subaru is fitting a more powerful version of the 2.0-liter, turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine than we get on these shores.
The company says that S4 stands for "'Sports performance', 'Safety performance', 'Smart driving' and 'Sophisticated feel," and it certainly looks like this Rex ticks all of those boxes. The most surprising feature is the Japanese model's 2.0-liter turbo engine boasting 296 horsepower (221 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque in this application. That's quite a healthy upgrade over the 268 hp and 258 lb-ft that Americans get in the standard WRX, and it's even nipping at the heels of the 305 hp and 290 lb-ft from the STI with a 2.5-liter mill that we get over here.
While extra power is always welcome, enthusiasts might not be so thrilled that Subaru's Sport Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission is the sedan's only available gearbox. However, it offers a simulated eight-speed shifting mode when drivers notch the car into Sport# driving mode. Of course, the S4 also packs Subie's trademark all-wheel drive with Vehicle Dynamics Control and Active Torque Vectoring as standard.
