the Impreza includes a version of Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system, which works especially well in snowy conditions and adds handling confidence in wet, inclement weather. Electric power steering provides crisp steering response and helps save fuel, while the low center of gravity for Subaru's boxer four engine further aids handling. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are also included across the model line. The Impreza benefits from major changes introduced last year, with a more aerodynamic yet sharply detailed look on the outside plus much-upgraded interior trims and cabin appointments. Seating was also redesigned, and there's now a good, upright driving position--with visibility aided by mirrors placed back along the doors plus smaller side windows in front. In back, seating is ample for two adults and hatch and trunk room in either version were increased with lower, flatter cargo floors. In either version, split seatbacks fold forward to expand space. They will recommend something bizarre, inappropriately high performance, compromised or utterly impractical for a given consumer's needs, and they'll almost never recommend something that makes sense. And then they'll come up with 3.7 million reasons why the leading vehicle someone is thinking about is a bad choice.
Or maybe that's just what I do.
Regardless, if you poke, prod, bother or just get us drunk enough, eventually you'll begin getting honest feedback. Subaru previews rally-ready WRX STI for Global RallyCross
Wed, 16 Apr 2014Subaru's long and distinguished history in the world of rallying is about to get another chapter, as it's set to field a team in the Global RallyCross Championship. The car? The all-new WRX STI.
Yes, Subaru will be fielding a GRC challenger, with drivers Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen at the helm. This particular car was teased earlier this week, and is a preview of the eventual GRC model which will launch this fall. The race-ready STI boasts a custom widebody kit with a carbon-fiber rear wing. The roof scoop and the mirrors are also made of carbon fiber, while the wheels are provided by Method. As with all GRC contenders this year, the WRX STI is shod in Yokohama spec rubber. It's not clear what sort of engine sits under the scooped hood, although we imagine we'll find out before the season kicks off in a few months.
Perhaps even more exciting is word that Subaru will also prepare a version of the WRX STI for stage rallies, with Travis Pastrana and David Higgins fielding the new car in the Rally America Championship. That car should arrive later this year.
Subaru looks back on record-setting WRX STI from 2011 Isle of Man
Fri, 27 Dec 2013In what we can only presume/hope is a precursor to the launch of the next-gen WRX STI, Subaru has released three videos now giving us a look back at the history of the STI-badged WRX models. In this third video, Dominick Infante, national manager of product communications at Subaru of America, got ahold of the automaker's 2011 WRX STI that broke records for the Isle of Man TT Challenge a couple of years ago.
In 2011, rally driver Mark Higgins piloted this car to a lap speed record of 115 miles per hour and a lap time record of 19:56.7 around the 37.8-mile course. The race-prepped STI, which Infante refers to as an "STI on steroids," features a beefed-up suspension, a wonderful-sounding open exhaust and the removal of the speed limiter to go with full roll cage and racing seats and harnesses.
