I can`t get a written quote? I can`t
I can`t get a written quote? I can`t deal with just a (trust me) on a complete engine rebuild. He exclaimed that all of Portland comes to his shop to get this type of service. The service shop is in need of some professionalism in sales an customer service. Rob seemed to act like I was putting him out asking for a written quote. I`ve seen enough and will shop else where.

Halsey is GREAT for aircooled VW`s!
The guys at Halsey are honest and good at what they do. They will present the fixes that are necessarily and not force the ones that are not. (On a 40+ year old car there is a difference) Prices are reasonable and the workmanship is top notch and completed in a reasonable time frame.
I think the older negative reviews are either by unhappy people in general or experienced by the old owner. Tom (the current owner... view more) and his Wife are VERY nice and very helpful people.
Also, having the parts on hand, priced well, and in stock beats mail order any day!

Poor Customer Service
After shortly moving to the area, I was referred to Halsey Automotive Svc. by a friend for VW parts and maintenance. The guys at the parts counter were pleasant enough, but didn`t seem excited to help me. The guys in the service department on the other hand were very rude, and told me that I didn`t know what I was talking about when I tried to tell them what I thought was wrong with my car. I`ve been driving the same... view more VW for nearly 10 years, and feel that I have a deep understanding of how my car works. None the less, the lead mechanic was rude enough that I will not be returning to Halsey Automotive for any parts or service in the future.

Friendly, personable service
Always friendly and never snooty. They charge a fair price.
I was told by another shop that I needed a new transmission, but when I took it to Halsey they fixed it for about $200.
They never talk down to me when explaining what`s going on with my VW bay window.

I am now filling legal action against Halsey
I Paid $1400 for tranmission work that never worked right, I took the car back 3 -4 times while still under warranty and they did not coorect it - then suddenly when the warranty was expired - I was told I would have to pay more for them to work on it again.
For some reason they could not work on it and fix it correctly while it was under warranty.
The transmission completly stopped working and they ref... view moreuse to fix it.
After taking the car to A&P service center - with out me mentioning who had worked on it - I was told the transmission needed a complete rebuild and would not cost near $1400
And he also mentioned whom ever worked on it did not know what they were doing.
I am now filling legal action against Halsey

Halsey Automotive is the best VW and Audi repair shop in Portland
I have several VW and Audi cars. I have been taking them to Tom at Halsey Automotive for 15 years. Their service is excellent. Yes, they are busy because they are the best in town. However they are always accommodating and realistic about when they can get to your car. Their estimates are honest and accurate. The pricing is more than fair. They really know VAG cars. The repairs have been of quality and they stand be... view morehind their work. They went above and beyond with me when a sub contractor screwed up. Try getting that kind of service on an old VW at the dealer. Once your warrantee is up, I highly recommend Halsey Automotive.

Superior service and fair prices.
I`ve been going to Halsey for 15 years and they`ve never failed me. From power windows to water pumps to broken door locks, they`ve always given a fair price and far exceeded any other shop in town service-wise. I needed some armrests for the captains chairs and VW wanted $200 each -- Halsey cannibalized perfectly new-looking ones and installed for $10 each!
I can always count on them to give me an accurate es... view moretimate, superior and timely service, and an overview of what might be coming up next for me, but without any pressure to ""get it done now"".
Halsey is also the best place to peruse the bulletin board for used vans -- these guys really know Westys!

Manic Owner- Beware
We used Halsey Automotives for a while without complaints. The woman at the front desk is darling, but the owner is very unpredictable. The last time we dropped off our car off to have it checked out, it was returned to us with a broken emergency brake. We never had a problem with the e-brake before that. When we approached the shop to ask what happened the owner freaked out , was agressively rude and accused us of t... view morerying to scam him. He made us pay over $100 to get it fixed. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe the brake was on its last leg and some new employee yanked it too hard and then never said anything. Who knows, but regardless the owner is not rational and I would not recommend doing business with somelike that.
