This repair shop is well known in Salt
This repair shop is well known in Salt Lake. However, I have found that if you are a woman alone, be sure to ask for the replaced parts. Or better yet, have a man deal with this shop.
Within a period of 2 years, this shop replaced the timing belt and water pump twice on my Volkswagen. When the engine stopped a third time, they told me that I had not kept the oil changed according to specs and that I would nee... view mored to rebuilt the top of my engine, that there was no guarantee that there were not metal shavings in the bottom of my engine which would wreck any work that was done anyway. When I asked them if they would like to buy my car and how much they would pay for it, they told me I had been a good customer and they would pay me $1000 for the car.
Upon consulting a second repair shop, I learned that for the THIRD time I was required to replace the timing belt and water pump. When I asked about the oil and metal shavings, the second shop assured me that there was no problem. Indeed, there is a little screen/filter which would prevent anything like that from happening.
I had the second shop repair the timing belt and water pump and I have been entirely pleased and satisfied.
I have had issues with the air conditioner and I thought that it would just be a simple fix--replace the freeon or something like that. $1100 later, I was on my way home when ALL of the lights on the dashboard came on and my car rolled to a halt. When I had friends that discovered the cause (after having to pull the car home.) and still couldn`t complete the repair, we called Utah Import for some guidance. The response---""We don`t repair cars over the phone."" Total cost of that repair--$1200. And I was fortunate that the car didn`t catch on fire because all of the electrical fuses were melted into one huge blob of plastic.
I wouldn`t got back to Utah Imports for any kind of repair. They have completely destroyed any trust I might have had it them.

Excellent Shop and Service!
Utah Imports is an excellent shop. I have done business with them for many years and have always found them thorough and honest. They do great work and I have never had a reason to complain.
Allan, Jeff, Jim, and all of the mechanics are willing to discuss the problem and offer suggestions. I like the fact they are willing to openly discuss what they find and the options I have for repairs. They have even expl... view moreained how I could do some of the easy repairs myself to save money. You don`t find many shops willing to to pass up money but Utah Imports has done that with me.
Utah Imports is great, give them a try!

Fair and Competent
Utah imports has been servicing my Audi and Vw for a number of years. In this time, they have proven both fair and extremely capable. I have recommended this shop to family members and friends.

A very well run shop! I have owned my Audi for 4 years and have really liked the service from Utah Imports; I have never been disappointed with either the quality or price of the work. I just wish they worked on Jeeps .

Use your brain!
If you are reading these reviews, note that most of them come from the same place. Use your brain, they have stacked the reviews to negate the honest and true ones. So here is my review, took our car in for a timing repair, told we would need to replace entire engine. $6K. Enough for 2 years tuition. For a family on a budget, that is devasting. After sleeping on it, we decided we wanted a second opinion, or ch... view moreeck out all options. So we called and asked how much it would be to just fix the timing issue and nothing else. We were told they would either do the $6K repair or nothing at all. No options. Hmmmm.....they said it was a liability issue. It drove into the shop with a timing issue, we simply wanted that fixed and then have the engine issues looked at separately. So now it will not drive at all and we are left being forced to take their opinion or towing it somewhere else. Call the tow truck. Anyone not open to a second opinion is probably not on the up and up.

I have taken multiple cars to ...
I have taken multiple cars to Utah Imports for quite some time. I have even recommended them to others. However, that all changed last week.
I recently took my vehicle to Utah Imports at 858 S. State St. I have taken it there for years and had fairly decent service. However this one was different. I took it in on Wednesday, November 30th. I had a few things I wanted them to look at but they offered to do a full lo... view moreok-over for free. Later that day they called and gave me a quote for thousands of dollars in `needed` service. While I kind of expect that type of thing to occur, I did agree that I desperately needed a timing belt. The cost they were asking for that service was $951.00 for parts and 6.30 hours of labor. I thought that was quite high so I told them I would call them back on Thursday morning to tell them what I wanted done.
In the meantime I called a few other shops. They gave me roughly the same cost for the timing belt. The following morning, on Thursday at 8:36am, I called Utah Imports and authorized them to perform the service to the timing belt, as well as a couple of other small items. They told me the car wouldn`t be ready until Friday. I was surprised to receive a call at 1:04pm on the same day that the car was ready.
When I went to pick up the car, I was astounded to find that they were charging me 7 hours of labor. I asked them why they were charging me that much labor when it was roughly 4.5 hours from when I called to authorize work and when they called me to tell me it was finished?
The first initial response was that the hours listed is "what it takes to do the job." I mentioned that obviously it does not and explained the time difference. The next reason I received was that his mechanics had done it so often that they had learned to do it faster, and to charge the higher rate for labor was an incentive for them to do a better job. I then asked what the incentive was for the customer to bring a vehicle to them? He said that other shops might take longer to do the job.
He (Allan Anderson) seemed aghast when I told him that other shops only charged me for the actual hours it took. Even if it was quoted higher in the beginning. I asked if it took longer than the 7 hours if he would`ve charged me more? He said that they charge whatever it takes to get the job done. He added that he could`ve `sat` on the car and called me a few hours later to let me know it was done but they strive to be "honest" with their customers.
At this point he was clearly getting agitated with me and I didn`t want a full-blown confrontation, but at nearly $90 an hour in labor the $250-$300 difference is substantial.
Its sad because they are knowledgeable, (even condescending at times) but I`m sorry, to be so blatantly flippant about their unethical billing methods isn`t worth the skill level. There are other shops with just as much knowledge out there.

UPDATED:Extremely disappointed in their dishonest practices.
UPDATE: After contacting the BBB, the owner, Jeff Keller called to discuss the matter. He was very nice and tried to explain that another technician assisted in the process which was the reason for the labor charges. However, as we discussed the matter it was clear that the charge would have been the same regardless which he explained was the way `all` mechanics do business. He is very concerned about his reputation... view more and I don`t blame him. He offered to make things right by refunding the nearly 3 additional hours of labor and I was grateful for that resolution.

Helped me quickly in a pinch
I was moving across the country to start a new job in California and was stopped for the evening in Salt Lake when the ""check engine"" light came on in my Audi A3. I wasn`t about to try and drive over the Sierras with the engine indicator on and risk inflicting engine damage, so I set about trying to find a shop to help me out. I took the car first thing in the morning to the dealer (Dave Strong), but they hemmed ... view moreand hawed about whether they`d be able to quickly get me in and help me (or even do a quick test to determine if the problem was serious). Unwilling to make any commitment as to how soon they could help me, if at all, the people at the dealership seemed more concerned with protecting themselves than helping me. In no position to hang around Salt Lake indefinitely while the dealer took its time finding out what was wrong with my car, I called up Utah Imports. I explained the situation, and they confirmed that they could get me in right away and figure out what was going on. So, I took the car down the block to Utah Imports. They took it in immediately, ran the diagnostics, told me exactly what was wrong, and had me on my way in about an hour.
