State Inspection Failed Due to Use of ""Firestone criteria""
I would rate this place a zero if I could. My boyfriend, unaware of how bad Firestone was, naively took his truck into this location for an inspection, which he failed. Arriving home with the report, I quickly reviewed the criteria his truck supposedly did not meet. As it turns out, they failed him for having an anti-lock brake light on in the dash and also a tire tread of 2/32 of an inch. Thinking it seemed unus... view moreual to be failed for anti-lock brakes not working (esp. since not all cars have them), I did a little research to find out on the Texas DPS website only to find out that this was not even in the rejection criteria. In addition, the tire tread criteria clearly states that the inspection fails if the tire tread is ""less than 2/32 of an inch,"" when it was clearly written on the report that his tires measured exactly 2/32 of an inch. I even went & measured the tires myself to confirm the measurement. I called the shop to state my case, and the guy didn`t want to listen to me, insisting that the truck had failed inspection, even after I challenged him to check the regulation handbook himself. When I argued about the tread, he said, ""Well Firestone standards are 5/32 of an inch."" Well who cares about Firestone standards, you idiot, this is a state inspection not a Firestone inspection. So, I called up someone from the the Texas DPS, who met my boyfriend at the shop and made them reinspect his truck, which he passed. They certainly weren`t happy to see DPS, but at least they got the point that you must use the state regulations when conducting a state inspection. Needless to say, don`t take your car there, esp. for an inspection!

Will try to sell you un needed repairs
I`m selling my car so the person who wanted to buy it took it to the Firestone on William Cannon. They told him my car needed new brakes right now when they have at least another 10 k until replacing. They told him the car needed upper and lower ball joints- I just had the lowers replaced last year and have barely put miles on the car since then, told him I need new shocks- yes the shocks are old but they do not nee... view mored replacing and still function correctly. Told him windshield wipers need replacing- again- they are a few years old but still work great. They told him the pinion seal is leaking which it isn`t but I do agree with them that if it were to be replaced the differential probably would quit making noise. So after the dude decided not to buy the car based on what Firestone told him- I immediately took it to the shop which made the repairs- they put the explorer up in the air and showed me the pinion seal which was not leaking- showed me the lower and upper ball joints-which are in great condition-confirmed the brakes have at least 10 k on them- brake work was done in 2008 and I have less than 15k on them- The part I needed was a $18.00 sway tie link kit. I am very mad and am considering legal action. Do not use any Firestone shops in Austin. Do your research on this company as they do not have a very good reputation in Austin. I quit taking my car to them 4 years ago after they had done $1800.00 in work on my vehicle and when I returned for an oil change 3 months later told me I needed the identical work done again- imagine the surprised look on their faces when I pulled out an invoice for the "" work"" they said I needed which they had already performed. The only Firestone I ever had a good experience with is in Dallas on Lovers Lane. If you insist on using Firestone make the drive to Dallas otherwise find another mechanic. I will probably sue them for misleading my car buyer.

Felt taken advantage of
Before going to have your vehicle assessed for repairs it is best to do your research and have some knowledge of what the problem might be to avoid being charged for unnecessary work. Firestone is seemingly a one-stop-shop, but be aware that not all maintenance/repair issues can be serviced there. The pricing is not entirely competitive; shop around and you WILL find a better deal elsewhere.
