RIP OFF PLACE
My son is in college in Austin and his car was overheating. Took it to Pep Boys since it was convenient to where he lived. They gave him an estimate for $800! When that didn`t work they said it was probably the hoses and they would repair it for $156. We okay`d that. When I looked on my account for the charge it was $250! When my son went back in to complain the mgr. said that he was new there and they brought ... view morehim to this store because of issues they were having. The car was still overheating. Long story short a friend finally fixed the car and this is what he found. The orginal problem was that the thermostat stuck. That caused extreme heat and caused a leak in the radiator (it looks like someone tried to repair it and the extreme heat caused their fix to fail) this was something near impossible to detect)). However, they (meaning Pep Boys) put the lower radiator hose on in such a manner that once under pressure it caused to leak heavily. This tells me that they did not even test drive when the completed the work.
I brought the radiator to Richard, the service manager, whom I spoke to before and showed him what a crappy job they did. I told him if the car needed a thermostat and radiator, then there was NO REASON TO REPLACE THE HOSES. He said that possibly my son had turned down the radiator and thermostat job. I told him that he probably did as $800.00 was out of his range to PAY. He said that as some sort of manner to divert some of the blame our way. I told him that was B.S. because if he turned down the radiator and thermostat THEN THERE WAS ASOLUTELY NO REASON TO REPLACE THE HOSES. I told him that I was there because my son knew NOTHING about mechanics and the I feel they took advantage of his limited knowledge.
The mgr. told Richard (the guy that fixed the car) to have my son bring in the receipt and they would see what they could do. My son is doing that today (12-28-11). Hopefully, they will redeme themselves, however I doubt it. Thank goodness for the friend we found the original proble and fixed the problem.

Dishonest
Dishonest.
A Bosch Premium Plus battery was purchased in August of 2009 for $89.99, plus taxes, state battery recycling fees, and installation fees. The battery has a 8 year warranty and a 3 year free replacement warranty.
The battery died in October 2011, the car was brought to Pep Boys to confirm it was not working and under warranty. I was informed it would be over an hour before they could look at it so I left... view more the premises. They called me shortly after I left and told me the battery had been replaced and the total was $42.62.
I brought up the fact that the battery was under its free replacement period so they broke down the bill to show me the various fees. Apparently the battery had gone up in price so I was charged for the increase in price. A free replacement with no conditions does not imply I am responsible for the increase in price. I dispute this, and the sales taxes associated.
The receipt clearly gives an estimate of $0.00.
I was charged higher than in-store advertised rates for installation - labor I did not give them consent to perform.
I dispute the charges as follows: Parts $19.49, Labor, $15.50, Other $2.79 of the $5.79 fees, and Tax of $1.84
I do not dispute the charge of $3 for the state battery handling fees.
I am entitled to a refund of $39.62
I do question the fact that they are selling a product guaranteed for 8 years, that died in less than 26 months and are burdening the state with disposal / recycling of lead and sulfuric acid of what was obviously a defective product.
You do not need to take my word for it, read the reviews written by those that have been put out hundreds or thousands of dollars due to incompetence, negligence and dishonest business practices .

***Get a tow truck do not go here under any circumstances***
As sent to Pep Boy`s Corporate:
I went to your facility on the advise of my father as my serpentine tensioner broke, and it was after normal business hours. Your ""mechanics"" (I do not know where they are certified as such) ""repaired"" my vehicle. Since your staff touched my car, I have had several issues. I took my car to my mechanic who informed me that first of all, the wrong size belt was placed on my car!... view more He could tell this visually via the wobbling in the tensioner. However, he did not touch anything, and called your facility on South Lamar in order to verify what he could do without voiding my warranty on the ""service"" your organization performed. He advised me that this is common practice and to take it back to have the proper belt installed. I went back to your facility, only to be told (after a 5 minute look under the hood and no tools being used to check the size of the belt) that the correct size belt was on my car. IT WAS NOT THE CORRECT SIZE BELT, now, I have had to pay twice for the same service to have my mechanic correct your incompetency. Which is OK since I would not trust my Timex watch with your staff of high school drop outs. I will advise everyone I know to avoid your services at all costs...a $50 tow service to a reputable mechanic is cheaper than paying twice for the same repair with improper parts installed.
Regards.

They`ll make U cry
I was crying when I left pep boys today! I got there @11 am and left @ 3 pm without resolving the problem they caused the last time I was there. Disorganized & Inaccurate?! 4 Months ago I pd 400 for a tuneup and they did an air check and said nothing was wrong. A few months later a wire shorted out the blower motor causing sparks and smoke inside the cab. So They put in an air conditioner blower motor 3 weeks ago tha... view moret makes a clacking noise inside the cab. They didn`t have time to deal with me so the manager said if it keeps it up bring it back. So my next day off I did. I waited for 2 hours for them to tell me the person assigned the work was not there so they`ll get right on it. 2 hours later they said they ran a leak check! I wasn`t there for that! I left without resolve. I think they are waiting for the warranty to run out so they won`t have to fix the problem that they caused! Do not go there.

Inaccurate Diagnostics
I recently took my car to Pep Boys to evaluate a ""spongy brake"" pedal. I brought my car in at 9:45 am so there would be plenty of time to diagnose & fix the problem. About 2:30 pm I called to check on it & I was told that they were currently inspecting it & would have an answer for me soon. About 15 minutes later, they contacted me because they were unable to locate & open my car (I thought they were currently i... view morenspecting it about 10 minutes ago). After about an other hour, I called them again & they told me I need a new master cylinder, which could run a few hundred dollars & they would not be able to get the part for another 3-4 days. I decided to take my car for a 2nd opinion because they did not seem very organized. Another reputable mechanic inspected my car & told me nothing was wrong with the master cylinder & the brake fluid needed changing. Needless to say, I would not recommend Pep Boys & will not trust this location again.

Never again
I took my car in last October to have my front and back brakes replaced, as well as new drivebelts put in. I picked the car up and immediately noticed something being wrong - my brakes were very hard, and my car had started shaking hard at highway speeds. I couldn`t take it back in until the following evening, so I drove it the 40 miles roundtrip to and from the office that next day, and brought it in after work. Tha... view moret entire drive was horrendous - I almost skidded into the backs of several cars because my pedal was so hard, I was almost unable to stop. The mechanic looked at it, and he said the adjustment on the back brakes was off, and that he had readjusted it and the problem should be gone. As for my hard vibration, he said it was because my two front tires were cupped from bad struts. I told him that the vibration was not in the front end, because I felt it in my seat, not the steering wheel. He kept insisting that I needed new front tires and struts, so I left. I went into Discount tire, where I had bought the tires from originally, and they looked at the front tires and said they were perfectly fine, and so were my struts. They also looked at my back wheel, and found that the rim was mangled severely - that was the cause of the vibration I was feeling. When Pep Boys had taken my car on a test drive after working on it, they had apparently knocked or popped a curb, and apparently pretty hard. Now I need a new wheel. The brake problem never did resolve - Five months later, I still have a hard pedal, and I still nearly get into accidents trying to brake almost every day. I took the car back in once more, and they said I must have knocked a curb and not realized it, trying to blame it on me - I think I would know if I popped a curb hard enough to MANGLE a steel wheel. Needless to say, they`ve lost my business.
