Service Department is a bunch of Scam Artists!!
I admit that I do not change my oil as often as I should. I took my car to Stokes Kia (which is now located in Goose Creek) for a routine oil change. Zac from the service department addressed the fact that I had missed a couple oil changes in a very intimidating way before they even looked at my car. A few minutes later he came to get me and told me that I had caused a serious problem to my engine which would require... view more lots of labor, parts and time. He proceeded to tell me that their "Master Technician" had drained all the oil out of the car, but because I had not changed my oil on schedule I caused so much build-up and "sludge" in my engine that the oil would not go down when they attempted to put more in it. Zac told me that they would need to take my engine apart, send it to a machine shop to be cleaned out, and have some parts replaced. It would take about a week and would cost me an "estimated" $1400!! He also told me that he could not allow me to leave with my car without allowing them to fix it. (Of course, I`m female, alone at the dealership, and panicking...so I didn`t take the time to think that what he was telling me would be illegal.) Luckily my husband knows quite a bit about cars and when I called him in a panic he said, "I`ll be right there!" My husband talked to Zac and this "Master Technician", asked some questions and took a look at the car himself. My husband came out and told me to have the car towed home (because now it has no oil in it) and to not give them a dime. Thanks to Verizon Wireless` Roadside Assistance the car was towed home for free. My husband had the valve cover off in 10 minutes to find that there was no sludge or build-up....the baffle where the oil is poured in was clogged. He cleaned it out with a screwdriver and some gasoline and the oil was poured in beautifully!! He ran a block flush through it just to be on the safe side and then changed the oil as normal. What Stokes Kia wanted to charge me $1400 and a week to do took my husband $50 and a couple hours. Ladies....bring an intelligent man with you and don`t be taken or intimidated by these scam artists!!
