Hidden charges game
Up until 12/2011, we have been going to Curt`s Quality Auto Care, Inc. for regular oil changes, tire rotations and a drive shaft joint replacement and we have been quite happy with his work and pricing. Praise the Lord our vehicle has not needed various mechanical work to be performed.
In 2008 it was time to have some minor brake work done on our vehicle. We took our vehicle to Curt and he was asked to assess the... view more situation and give us an estimate. After receiving the estimate, it was felt that the work could be done more cost effective, elsewhere. Yes, the rear brake work, new rotors and pads were purchased by us and installed by another quality service shop for a respectable price.
Recently, this year 2011, we have heard some stories about Curt`s business practices and pricing. Just before 12/2011, the same vehicle was taken to Curt to assess the front brakes. I figure, I would give Curt the benefit of the doubt and give him another shot at earning to keep my business. Curt gives an estimate for slightly over $500.00 and states the caliper needed to be rebuilt. Boy were we surprised when we were told we have a $19.99 plus tax bill to pay for the estimate. Nowhere on the premises, at the time, does it state estimates will incur a charge or are free. Now, the point is no one should have to pay for an estimate, no one. If Curt had a problem with us getting the rear brake work done by another service shop, then he should have been professional about it and asked me why I had someone else do the work. I would have been more than happy to tell him that the same quality work was done in a more cost effective manner. Again, the material was purchased elsewhere and work performed by the same other quality service shop. The overall cost of material and labor was under half of Curt`s estimate. Plus, the technician stated the caliper did not need to be rebuilt at all.
Yes, I did learn a lesson from this, and maybe Curt does not need my business but he will not be performing even the simplest tasks of oil changes, tire rotations, etc on my vehicles. I believe that maybe Curt and I have been getting too comfortable with each other. I suppose I needed this to show me there are other respectable service shops out there, you just have to find them.
Also, a family member who use to take their vehicle to Curt`s had asked for an oil change and to check on a seal. This family member was shocked to find out the bill came close to $100.00. Oil change and replacing the seal. No call was made by Curt`s explaining the condition of the seal, giving a cost of replacement and most important of all getting permission to do the work.
Curt`s has to be familiar with an operating budget. More and more people are living and sticking to their budget.
And if you are fortunate enough to remain as one of Curt`s regular customers then, I am happy for you and wish you the best of luck that you have a good technician and you can afford him.
People remember you are still buying a service, there are other choices.

Damaged my wheels
I had my high end 20"" wheels in to have new tires installed. I brought them in, clean and waxed. In excellent condition. When picking them up they were cover with dirty wash water dried. The worst part is they have small pit marks and several scrapes through the chrome. Spoke to the manager Curt Varner and denies the damage happened there. He did not take the time to examine them when I dropped them off. And ... view moreis saying the chrome is being damaged by the castings. I have owned them and cared for them and looked at them when dropping them off. Not only did he not look at them before the work he did not look at them after even after I specifically requested they use care. They scoffed and that attitude seem to be the norm when dealing with customers... He would rather threaten a court fight instead of looking to what inhouse could have caused the damage. I would have given them 0 stars but not an option
