I recently bought a used truck...
I recently bought a used truck from a small landscape company, who is well known, and upon getting it to our shop we discovered a small hydro leak. I called the previous owner, and he was very helpful and had agreed to pay for the repair, as he believed that it might have been a seal leak.
He contacted Bob over at Gorman who apparently told this man that he would help us out. Bob told the previous owner that he ... view morewould stop over, look over the truck and make arrangements to get it over to a friend of his that could do the repair - NOT GORMAN. This part of the conversation was never clearly conveyed to us, so when Bob showed up he made arrangements to have the truck taken back to his shop.
Long story short, we received a $1200 estimated for a PTO replacement. When I conveyed this to the previous owner, he was upset. He immediately made some calls and discovered that Gorman was going to outsource this and had over a 40% mark-up to do nothing. When we found all of this out, I informed Bob that I was not having them do the work and that I was going to pick up the truck.
Upon arrival we were handed an invoice for over $100.00 stating that was for the diagnosis.
Let me be clear, as a small business owner, I know how important it is to be profitable and to cover your costs. But more importantly, I know it is far more important to inform your customers of costs they may not be aware of, and be honest enough to follow through with the promises made to people you have done work with for a long time.
In this case Bob and his boss (the owner of Gorman - who in my opinion is just as shady) are not honest business men. I suspect that is how they conduct their business everyday. I dont need friends, what I need are vendors and suppliers I can trust. Gorman- well they are niether.
I would not recommend them for anything. The trust relationship for us has been tarnished, and that is something that I will not overlook.
I paid them their $100 and we got our truck back. By the way, I was not asking for the invoice to be waved. I offered them half of the bill, since their rate (or minimum) was not fully disclosed at anytime prior to us showing up to pick up the truck.
To sum it up: Gorman, dishonest business practices, crooks and very expensive. NOT worth the time, or money. There are plenty of other good qualified mechanics and suppliers to choose from.
Truly,
"DUDE" as I was referred to several times during my last conversation with them.
