Sometimes You Do Not Get What You Pay For
As a long time but infrequent customer of Analogique I unfortunately have to concur with the many negitive opinions of them that have been expressed on this page. 30 years when the meticulous Jean Mulot (the owner of the place) actually worked there they did meticulous work. The original owner being French meant the place was never warm and friendly, but given the quality of the work nobody cared. Now that he is n... view moreo longer involved in the company the quality of work has gone into the toilet and his only legacy that lives on in the people that now run the place is the rudeness and contempt to everyone. So French. I am not going to bore you with what they did to me but rather thank the Internet for pages like this and the ability to shop for alternative repair shops, I now ship my vintage gear to specialists that know what they are doing and know how to treat a customer. A matter of trust
The moment you walk into the decrepit building in Chelsea where they are located and wait for the one working elevator you begin to feel uneasy about Analogique. As you wait for someone to notice you holding your heavy piece of gear, you have plenty of time to take in how dark, dirty, musty and hot the place is, like the back room of a pawn shop. Crudely lettered and written posters behind the counter remind you in n... view moreo uncertain terms that the minimum charge is $150, labor is $75 an hour and no credit cards are accepted.
After describing my problem (static on one channel of a 14 year old integrated amp) I was told that I`d hear from them in a few days with an estimate based on my $75 non-refundable cash deposit (which would be applied to the repair). After a week I didn`t hear from them so I called and spoke to the counter guy who is clearly not a technician and just repeats what he`s told. Apparently I needed a couple of relatively inexpensive parts replaced that had failed with age but it would cost $360 for them to thoroughly check out the unit and ""restore it to factory specs.""
Since that was a minimum of fours hours on the bench at $75 per I imagine they were recommending they test and replace every capacitor, clean every switch, examine every solder tracing, adjust the bias back to factory spec, etc. etc. etc. Or if they weren`t going to do all that unnecessary work they were just looking to rob me. I didn`t want all that work done. I just wanted the obviously faulty part replaced which should have cost less than $10 for the part and an hour of labor.
The counter guy quickly replied, ""Let me ask the technician"" and came back a moment later and said, ""$285 is the best he can do."" Wow, a $75 instant discount! Clearly these guys pull their estimates out of their a*ss and if you don`t like it you can just take your amp back and they get to keep the $75 estimate fee.
Peeved about this, I called one of Analogique`s competitors where the owner answered the phone and spent several minutes patiently listening to my problem and explaining how he did business. Bottom line, with any old electronic device there is inevitably deterioration but with time and effort pieces that were well made to begin with can be made ""good as new."" ""Good as new"" costs a lot more than the amp is probably worth after all those years. But he told me, ""We always give the customer the option. The minimum price to fix the problem he came in with and a price to make the unit as good as it can be.""
I took my amp back from Analogique, swallowing the estimate, and for less than they wanted in addition I bought a classic power amp on Ebay which I will use with my ""broken"" amp serving as a preamp (the problem is in the amp circuitry).
I wish I could suggest an alternative to Analogique but the repair of older high end audio is a field where the chances of getting taken are very high. As it is I`d stay far far away.

many years of great service
I have been using Analogique for over 15 years to repair several units and have received great service. They can be slow at times, but overall provide top notch repairs and back up their work. Just recently they refurbished my Mcintosh MX110 and it sounds better than ever.

analogique
i would not bring a complex, digital type unit here. i used this service in 90, or so with a 4 track tascam, they fixed it right.
brought a 788 tascam there 2.11. and after wating ro the estimate i was told the unit was fine. i had to inform the technician that the crystal readout was only 10% effective. (i had the unit for 9 1/2 years). and also some tracks the sounds were becoming distorted, etc. and keying in ... view moreletters when titling, and editing effects sometimes took minutes for just one letter.
a few more days another call saying caps were replaced etc. they would call when repaired. went there after the call, checked the liquid crystal. nothing changed. left it as they said they had another unit might be able to switch it. i called tascam and they told me they sold crystal, so i called back told them to order new crystal. another week or so, back up to pick it up for additional 100$.
come home try out. liquid crystal not fully repaired. i`d say it`s about 80% there. the faders are totally ineffectual during playback, & mixdown they are at a constant volume, (this was not one of the original problems). when switching screens it appears as if the new text/screen comes about slowly, blurring a bit.
keying in letters is still off a bit, not nearly as troublsome but still as i approach a desired letter, slow down, suddenly it will shoot way past, and i must keep trying and it happens again and again.
so basically $408.00 for a machine that is inoperable. i will have to send to tascam. something i would have done except i remember in 2002 reading on a forum they took 6 months. unsure if that is true but it will be worth the wait. will be interesting in what they have to say about the report. the people there were professional and nice but i can`t deny the results. i could bring it back, but i really do not trust it. i am technically speaking an idiot, but even i know when crystal readout is spent.
i am sorry to have to give this review, but it is true, sad to say.

Carless with Vintage Gear
They scratched the face plate of my 1962 Fisher 800B then tried to cover it up by filling in the scratch with dirt.
When I confronted them about the scratch he started to rub it and stated that "this scratch must of been old because there is dirt inside the scratch".
Never admitted scratching it nor did they offer any compensation.
Would not recommend this place.
John.

Living off the fumes of their reputation from the 80`s
From the first time you speak with them your inner voice will tell you that leaving your treasure high end audio with these people is a mistake. They are unfriendly and impolite. When you find that they don`t call with their estimate in their own stated time frame you will being to wonder what is going on. When they tell you their estimate weeks after the date the originally promised one you will be first be shocke... view mored and them realize why they refuse to give even an inkling or ballpark of an estimate as they take your cash deposit. And when you pick up your kit only to find sitting high up on a hard formica shelf and a woman that is so small that she can`t help but slide it off the shelf and scrap the paint on the entire side... and then proceeds to say nothing and leaves you in alone in the shop for 15 minutes without returning... stay away. these guy had a great reputation years ago, i know becuase i used them alot and met then then owner/founder. now they are a worthless bunch of theives that make a living on keeping your security deposit.

Analogique Scratched face Plate Cover Up
I brought my vintage Marantz model 18 Receiver to Analogique Systems Lab Inc. Located at 27 W 20Th Street Manhattan New York.
I need to have the Left channel fixed because It was not getting sound on the left side.
I was very carefull when I brought my receiver to this place to have it fixed.
My receiver was in Mint condition with a Perfect faceplate.
They had my receiver for over 6 weeks before t... view morehey finished the repair job.
After several calls by be it was then ready for pick up.
I was told to ""call the day before pick up so they could have it ready"".
The total cost was 490.00 minus the 75.00 I left as a security deposit.
When I went to pick it up
While there at the repair shop I Noticed a 1"" Black colored scratch on the face of my Previously Mint condition marantz .
After seeing this blemish knowing that they stereo had no scratches when first brought to Analogique I thought to my self that it looks like it could just be black silicone or glue that had dripped on to the faceplate during the repair job.
After trying to rub it off I noticed that it was in fact a deep scratch that was apparently filled with dirt to disquise the scratch and attempt to make it look like a old scratch.
I was So pissed off I pointed it out to the two that worked there and both said that ""they had no idea how it got there and that it was probably there when it was first brought in for repair"".
They said it looks like an old scratch because it has dirt in it"" and if it was a new scratch it would be shiney"".
I told them That They need to be more carefull when handling these units.
The guy then stated that `they are carefull because they know the value of these things""
I let them know that ""This never had this scratch and it was filled with dirt in the attempt to cover it up and make it look like an old scratch"".
They also tried to tell me that they noted on the invoice when I brought it in that the unit had ""scratches""not specified where the ""scratches"" were.
The only scratches I had before bringing it were a couple of small hairline scratches on the side of the unit that were insignificant and were NOT on the faceplate!
The end result was they denied scratching my unit and would not admit the accident.
Now I have a once Scratched Marantz model 18 that sound great but looks ugly.
The mechanical work from this place is good but they do not understand the value of Mint Ding scratch Free vintage receiver.
They should be much more careful when dealing with irreplaceable vintage gear.
