Needed a last-minute safety/emissions inspection, and my regular garage (Combs) couldn`t fit me in. Dobbs failed it for emissions because of a check-engine light, pulled the computer codes and said I needed a $600 replacement of a part that they admitted very seldom failed. Knowing that the computer codes can be misleading, I asked if there could be any other explanation, and was told, no, that was what was needed.... view more Took it to Combs for a second opinion when they could get me in, and they found a disconnected hose, which corrected the problem. Took it back to Dobbs for the emissions reinspection, and it passed. Draw your own conclusions.

Rip Off Artist

I was buying a used car in South County. I called to see if they could over look the car... the performance of the engine, check body for repairs, and for leaks.
I called for a price; the guy said $35 dollars. When I got there with the owner of the car, the price went to $45. The results given to me only said that the tires might be a concern, but everything else was good.

After purchasing the car, my mechanic informed me that my clutch would need replacing within a couple thousand miles.... Several months later, the clutch died. My mechanic gave me an estimate of $796. I called Dobbs, who quoted me almost $1100. After explaining the failed test by them, they would only give me a discount of $80.
Their first response was the normal ""You can never tell w/ clutches"". I asked, how my mechanic predicted the outcome from just pulling it into his garage. ""Well your mechanic must be really experienced?ˆ?. I made the statement ?ˆ?So your guys are not experienced and that is my loss?ˆ?. His response was that the inspection that they provided was only on the safety of the car?ˆ¦ Instead of giving it a state inspection for $20 or so bucks, Dobbs did a safety inspection, not at the state inspection level and charged twice as much.
Then they couldn`t admit to the error and still had dollar signs flashing in their eyes, while trying to convince me that it would be in my best interest to pay them more money for a less experienced mechanic.
