Outstanding service and staff
I found myself in Elmhurst at a friend`s house on a Sunday evening with a DOA car after going over something large on the tollway. We still don`t know what it was, but it left a bowling ball size dent in the radiator and destroyed the A/C condensor and a cooling fan. My friend recommended her long-time service folks at Crescent. What a great recommendation.
The staff at Crescent arranged to have my car towed t... view moreo their shop and got me an estimate that next morning. After hearing how reasonable it was, I asked them to fax it to my insurance company who immediately approved it. The parts were ordered and came in a couple days later. In the meantime, Crescent provided me a nice loaner car at no charge. They called me again Wednesday afternoon to tell me the car was ready for pickup. It`s been running well for the past few weeks since then.
When I picked up the car, Crescent provided me a list of other items on the car that ought to be taken care of soon. These matters included replacement of stabilizer bars, struts and tires. Had any been critical, I expect Crescent would have suggested they be replaced while the car was in their shop. Since they weren`t, Crescent took the low-key, informative approach. I expect to take care of these matters before winter and would go to Crescent if I lived closer to Elmhurst. As it is, I will definitly consider them if my regular hometown service shop doesn`t give me as good answers and as good a deal as the folks at Crescent have offered.
My experience strongly supports the two earlier 5-star reviews on Crescent Service Garage. These folks have been in business for a long time because they know their business really well and make working with them the best they can for their customers.

knowledgable, happy customer
First I want to say that I don`t personally know any of the staff or the owner at Crescent, but I have met several of them in the course of using their services over the last many of weeks. It is also important to know that I don`t usually take the time to write a review of anything, so this is an exception for me. I was so pleased with the service that I received on three recent occasions, that I went out of my wa... view morey to let the owner of this small shop know how well his people had performed. He told me that I could help if I would write a review on this site, so here I am. There is a horrible review of their service on this site, so I understand why he asked. Here is why I was so pleased with their service.
To fully appreciate this, you need to know that In my youth I did virtually all of my own auto maintenance including manual transmission overhauls, engine rebuilds, suspension work, even body work. In addition, most of my work life has been centered around mechanical trouble shooting in industrial manufacturing settings. It is important to understand this about me because my happiness with the service at Crescent is about my respect for their diagnostic abilities and my appreciation for their thorough explanations of what they find.
I do not believe that a small shop like Crescent (one that I understand to have been operating in the same place and under the same working ownership for 20+ years) can be completely devoid of integrity one day and then provide the kind of excellent professional service that I have received consistently since I started using them. At every decision point, the Crescent folks have spelled out my options. I had them do a tune up as a starting place to find a problem with my engine running rough. I didn`t think the tune up would cure it (although I was hoping it would). They asked me if I wanted to replace the spark plugs for the tune-up. They couldn`t know how long it had been since I replaced them, so they asked. In the end, they succeeded where others had failed in locating a faulty sensor was making my car run rough. I also had them do some suspension work for me. Once again, they gave me good detailed options to consider that ranged from a lower cost ""get by safely"" option to a ""make it new"" option. Finally, because of the confidence I was developing in the shop, I took a older friend of mine to them that was feeling trapped in a bad situation. He has an old Plymouth van and his power brakes were not working. He went to the dealer and they told him that they wouldn`t work on the brake system at all until they had repaired the malfunctioning diagnostic system that they plug into. That alone could have cost more the the van was worth. We asked Crescent to track down the issue and told them we wanted to stop investing in the search at $200 of labor if they had not found the answer. But once again they did find the answer by tracking down the short in the ABS pump-motor assembly that the dealer wouldn`t even begin to look for and they did so for well below the labor limit we had set.
In light of my own experience, it is nearly impossible to imagine that the Skunk 16 report is anything more than a hatchet job on Crescent by an unethical competitor. I simply do not believe it. Crescent is an excellent shop, and I would recommend them to anyone.

Best Service Anywhere, Anytime, Any Place Hands Down
Very few places are willing to explain everything that needs to be done from oil change to what a fan belt does. They explain it so as our 6 year old child understands what is going on. Wanting to make sure that the car was done in a reasonable time frame without jepardizing anything on the car with precession. We were happy to find them and they were happy to see us coming as though we were friends forever. Espe... view morecially when they broke the news about the car needing more work then we had anticipated. Willing to help us find the right means to get the car to Victory Auto Wreckers. Allowed us to make a more informed decision with company there. Thank you.

Poor performance
Had my car in for scheduled maintenance. Current mechanic reports that wheel balance they did was 6 oz. off in front. Brake inspection done, but written report did not state how much material was left or give any estimate to the mileage left on them. Had to have three rotors replaced and all four pads just a couple months since their inspection. Did not change plugs for a tune up, so basically they charged me for... view more a tune up and did an oil and filter change. Spark plugs say a lot about how an engine is performing, so I felt this was a pretty MAJOR oversight. New rims that I asked them to take special care with are scratched! They seem like nice guys, but I don`t trust that they really know what my car needs or how to maintain it properly, or without damaging my car`s accesories in the attempt. Definitely cost me more than I might have saved, considering I have to have one of my rims sent away for refinishing, not to mention had I not found someone more competent how much damage could have been caused to my engine due to neglect.
