Happy with Service

I took my car into Cheatham`s for a 100,000 mile check up re: a friends recommendation. I was pleased with the service, the thoroughness, and the price. There was a delay in getting the car, but that was the only unpleasant aspect of the experience.

Miserable Experience

I came to this garage based on the recommendation of another mechanic. After my and my friends` experiences, all I can figure is that Cheatham`s gave the other guy good service because they knew he was also a mechanic. I took my car to Cheatham`s because there was something wrong with the exhaust (it was really loud), and an oil leak. It sat there for 3 days before anyone ever looked at it. No one ever called me; ... view moreI had to keep calling to check on it. Eventually they looked at it, and told me the whole system was trashed and needed replacing. They said it would be impossible to fix for under $1000, probably more like $1500. I decided not to do it, and just live with a loud car. They said they ""fixed"" the oil leak, which cost hundreds. Now, a few months later (and with an even louder car), my oil is leaking again. I took it to another shop, who said I only needed to replace a $50 pipe to fix the exhaust. Lo and behold, my car is now running silently and beautifully. They also said it looked like someone replaced the valve covers recently, but did a bad job and they were leaking oil everywhere. They asked who did it, and when I told them, they sounded shocked to hear it was Cheatham`s, a well-known local shop. That will cost a few hundred dollars to fix... after I already paid Cheatham`s several hundred for their ""repair."" Another experience: My best friend also took her car to Cheatham`s about the same time I took mine. She had a problem where her battery was being drained, and told them so, and that she suspected it was the alternator. Her car sat there for over a week before they looked at it. She was very inconvenienced, because she had to scurry to find friends to give her rides to work, and the Cheatham`s employees did not seem to care. They never called her, and she had to keep calling them every few days to hear, ""We haven`t had a chance to look at it yet..."" Eventually, over a week later she called and she talked to the owner, who told her that he tested and re-tested the alternator and it was just fine, but he replaced her dead battery. He said he wasn`t sure what the problem was that drained her battery, but it was probably a problem with the computer and she`d have to take it to the dealer to get it fixed. Then she had to pay ~ $200 to get her car back after all of that. Her car ran for a while until the new battery died, and when she took it to the dealer, they told her it definitely needed a new alternator, and that was her only problem. It was repaired in two days. I am amazed with this level of terrible service and incompetence that Cheatham`s seems to have constant business. I will never recommend them to anyone, ever.
