Car repair ripoffs
Ok, I take my car in because the ""service engine"" light is on and I need to smog it. I drop off my car knowing the transmission has a problem that will not cost me more than $300, which is good because I have $218. There is NOTHING wrong with my car when I drop it off, even used the ac on the way. It`s $250. I go to pick it up and watch an idiot get in, back up 3 times until he finally simply hits a plastic 50 gall... view moreon trash bin and drags a metal ""table"" that was legs up with the car. I`m told that the cable that releases the E-brake was pulled OFF because the handle was broken and they didn`t know. I get in, turn on the ac and drive up the street. HOT AIR! I go back. ""Why isn`t my ac working, it worked on the way here?"" He opens the hood and screws the cap of the freon connection and promptly says, ""You have no freon, it`s empty"". GRR!!! I drive home and wait until the SMOG tech is back at work and go in, forgetting about the E-brake issue until the tech sets the brake and can`t release it. Great. Enter man #4, he knows how to release it and I ask him to show me, as it is inevitable that another idiot will set it at some point.I know how to release the E-brake now, so do the other 3 guys. No harm, no foul. Car goes in, passes smog! Man #4 calls me over, I`m not wanting to hear what he has to say. ""You need to flush out your transmission, the fluid is really bad"". WHAT??? They just tore it apart, there should be brand new fluid in there! He takes me over and shows me, it should be bright red. It`s sludgey brown. And LOW. I ask man #4 if it is easy to release freon from an ac. ""Yes"" So, ac freon, E-brake release cable and sludgey transmission fluid. Scott, my old neighbor, asks for a ride to the store. We get to the corner and my entire car SHUDDERS when I brake for the stop sign. Maybe it`s the brakes? I turn and give it gas, it hesitates, it shudders more and doesn`t want to pick up any speed. We get to the store with the car shuddering each time I brake. I take him home, same thing...the tranny is slipping. I go home and know for SURE it`s the tranny and not the brakes when I turn a corner, lift my foot off the brake and it STILL shudders! I`m thinking about the brown sludge in my transmission and hope it doesn`t seize up. It`s home, it`s parked. I have to take it to Scott in the morning. Thankfully, he`s been my mechanic for a long time and he is good to me, and he lived within less than a mile. I have NEVER had such a bad experience with a mechanic, but this whole ""getting my car legal on the road again"" experience has been one money pit from hell. Now I get to buy a kit for the transmission and drain it to put in new transmission fluid. I have $32 in the bank, I owe DMV $99 for tags and my registration for this year is up on Tuesday. I get paid on the last day of the month. NOW what? I get up, I smile, I go to Scott`s, I spend the $32 on the kit I need and tranny fluid and it sits at either Wayne`s mom`s or Ryan`s house until I get paid again. *sigh* FYI Chatfield`s mechanic on Del Paso and Barstow (near Arden)....NEVER AGAIN. Got the number to the BBB??
