After being the in the city for ~9 years I have finally discovered a really good, cheap, trustworthy mechanic so I thought I`d share the good news - if you don`t already have a mechanic who gives insanely good service, and is trustworthy and cheap, file this away somewhere safe until the next time you need a mechanic who gives insanely good service, and is trustworthy and cheap:

I found it completely by accident when taking comparitive quotes to get my car fixed. The business is run by an old Chinese guy called Ray who actually shows you what is wrong with the car (cracks in brake pads, fan belt wear, gives you a stethoscope to listen to the rattly noise coming from a particular component, blah blah) and then after he`s fixed it shows you the components he has swapped out and the new ones he`s put in. And he fixed a problems with my car (an oil tank leak and a rattling noise in the engine) that the actual VW dealer and my regular mechanic couldn`t fix - he noticed them immediately the hood was opened, in fact. And his prices were just over half of my usual place (and my usual place is just over half the price that the accredited dealer charges). Don`t let the slightly humble-and-dirty look of the place put you off, he really knows what he`s doing, car-wise, and he is at pains to give absolutely excellent service. His only problem is that I bet the yuppies who live in the upper mission are probably put off by the look of the place - more fool them. And the car was ready on time. My car is now purring like a kitten with all the previous hiccups, burps and throat-clearings gone.
