Scion FR-S recalled for key interlock problem

The Basics: Scion will recall 26,000 examples of the 2013-2016 Scion FR-S. The Problem: Some models with the automatic transmission might not have the connection for the key interlock. On these vehicles, it would be possible for owners to remove the key, even if the gearshift isn't in Park. This condition puts the coupes out of compliance with federal rules. Injuries/Deaths: "We are not providing specifics at this time," Scion spokesperson Cindy Knight told Autoblog. The company's announcement makes no mention of injuries or deaths. In the involved vehicles, connectors for the automatic transmission key interlock on some vehicles may not have been connected during pre-delivery service prior to sale. If the delivery mode connectors are not connected, it is possible to remove the key in gear positions other than "Park", causing the vehicles not to comply with a portion of Federal/Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 114. This could increase the risk of vehicle rollaway and a crash. All known owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail and instructed to return the vehicle to a Toyota dealer to have the ignition key interlock function confirmed, and if necessary, delivery mode connectors connected at no charge. Scion is in the unusual position of offering a pair of inexpensive sports two-doors, the rear-drive FR-S coupe and the front-drive tC hatchback. Despite offering outwardly similar size and form factors, the two have vastly different characters, chiefly because of their different drivetrain philosophies.
One area of commonality, however, is that both interiors have historically been underwhelming in terms of material choice and options. Oh, the FR-S has the basics nailed: a great driving position, grippy seats and properly businesslike wheel and shifter knob, but if you've been looking for premium-minded materials and high-end features from either model, they've been hard to come by.
The just-launched Monogram Series editions seek to rectify this somewhat, with each model getting additional features at a special price. In the case of the 2,000-unit FR-S limited edition, that means heated leather and Alcantara seats, heated side mirrors, high-intensity discharge headlamps, dual-zone climate control and BeSpoke audio and navigation, among other features.

Despite slow sales, no new Scion models in near-term pipeline [w/poll]

According to a top Toyota executive, the Japanese automaker will not be introducing any fresh Scion models in the near future, Reuters reports. As of August, Scion sales for this year were down 1.6 percent from 2012 and accounted for only 0.3 percent of Toyota's overall US sales. And last month, Toyota Motor Sales USA Senior Vice President Bob Carter informed the 1,000 dealers who carry Scion that they can drop the brand without penalty.
However, never fear - Carter has assured that, while nothing new is coming for at least six months, the company is still very committed to the quirky Scion brand. Toyota launched Scion, which targets the youth market, in 2003, and sales peaked in 2006. The brand currently has five models, with the 2013 best-sellers being the FR-S sports coupe followed by the tC sedan and xB hatchback.
