Scion iM Concept bows, production version confirmed for US

Scion has officially pulled the covers off its iM Concept, which is, in reality, a slightly modified version of the Toyota Auris that is already sold outside the United States. It's also a model that is going into production for North America, says Scion, minus, we'd guess, a good bit of the overly aggressive ground effects bits, slammed suspension and oversize wheels. A production iM has been confirmed for the upcoming New York Auto Show, where Scion is also promising a second new production debut, as well. After a substantial lull in its new product cadence (barring the FR-S), it looks like Scion is once again intent on cementing its position as the entry point into the Toyota brand, promising three new models in the next three years. Scion tells us that iM's name is derived from the first letters of the words 'individuality' and 'modern.' More important details like price, powertrain and on-sale date should come later in 2015, but Scion has at least say it "anticipates that a price under $20,000 could make this car enticing to youthful customers," all of which makes it sound like the second coming of the Toyota Matrix to us. After revealing the iM Concept car today at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Scion announced that a production version of the versatile five-door compact hatchback will be coming to dealerships in 2015. New drifting world record set in Toyota GT86

We have entered a drifting arms race. Last year, BMW smashed the Guinness World Record for the longest drift by hanging the tail out for 51.3 miles around a wet skid pad in an M5 at the BMW Performance Driving School in South Carolina. That beat the previous milestone of nearly seven miles. Now, Bimmer's record is up in smoke as well and is in the possession of a Toyota.
German driver Harald Müller pummeled the old record to drift for 89.55 miles around a 0.15-mile (235.5-meter) course in Samsun, Turkey, in a Toyota GT86 (or Scion FR-S as it's known in the US). According to the Guinness World Records website, it took him 612 laps and 2 hours, 25 minutes and 18 seconds to manage the achievement. Scion tC Release Series 10.0 is a limited-edition sayonara

We wish Scion could have gone out with a bang. But nope, it's yet another of the brand's Release Series models. The long-running group of special editions has been hit-or-miss over the years, but seemed to find its grove with its most recent FR-S Release Series 1.0 and 2.0. This is not an FR-S Release Series, though. It's a tC. You know, the only model that won't survive the Scion brand's death. Maybe we're being mean. Scion has made some decent tweaks for its Release Series 10.0, including TRD-branded lowering springs and a TRD exhaust. The Ken Miura body kit is a highlight too, and while Toyota has slathered its Barcelona Red on plenty of vehicles, we think this Scion is the best application of the shade. Other aesthetic changes, like the black badges, gloss-black wheels, and red contrast stitching could have been kitschy, but they actually kind of work. Like all Release Series models, this special tC will be limited to just 1,200 units. Prices start at $23,985 for the manual transmission model or $25,135 for the auto-equipped car.
