Great fixer!!"

Here's a nice project car.   Only 121k miles, desirable 2 door sport coupe hatchback with sporty 5 speed manual transmission, and sunroof.   In very good overall cosmetic condition, as you can see from the photos.   Was a sweet driver, until a radiator hose blew out when I was on the freeway, i was cruising along at 70 in the fast lane with moderate traffic and I look down and see the temp guage is pegged hot and the red triangle warning light is on.  So I pull over at the next offramp and kill the engine.  Not in time to save warping some valves, compression is low in the front 3 cyls but ok on #4.

Work that had been done recently included a new windshield ($300) rebuilt shift linkage (work done by Tor's Saab) clutch, brakes.   It passed smog easily.  The AC blows cold.  Turbo was strong and it did not smoke.  The paint is very good original, the car was garaged most of it's life and did not sit in the sun and get faded.   For these photos, I just washed the car. It was not rubbed out or waxed.  If you waxed it it would look even better.  Remember, a cheap paint job is at least $800.  Swap your good engine from your rusted or damaged body into this beautiful car! The alloy wheels are 15" Saab from a 2002 car.

The interior leather is very good.  There is a set of newer floor mats, but I took them out for the photos so you can see the original undercarpet and scuff pads on the floor are almost like new.   The drivers seat is a little worn on the left bolster, but there is black taffia repair tape over that area, check the photos.  Otherwise the seat leather is very nice.  Sunroof works fine. AC blows very cold.   New heater hoses installed by Tor's Saab.  Rear Saab emblem is covered with Red Hot Chilli Pepper sticker (that is the name of a popular band, this car has been aptly nick-named "The Chilli Pepper").   Also has a RHCP sticker on the circular gas tank filler door.

What it needs:

1.  Head job minimum, but more probably, swap in a good used engine.
2.  Drivers seat back release lever (which allows easier access to rear seats on drivers side) does not work.  (Pass side does work fine)
3.  Front tires are worn, rears are OK.  Michelin 195 60 R15's.
4.  Pass side fog light is missing.

Junkyard Gem: 1986 Saab 900 Turbo

Fri, May 31 2019

The Saab 900 sold well in Colorado, and owners of these cars tend to hang onto them for decades. For those reasons, I still find 900s while making my rounds of the self-service wrecking yards in the Denver region. The turbocharged models tended to fail more quickly than their naturally-aspirated counterparts, though, so the 900 Turbo can be tough to find today. Here's a 1986 that took its final tow-truck ride into a Denver yard a couple of months back. The 900 received a makeover for the 1987 model year, so today's Junkyard Gem comes from the final year of the 900 with the endearingly 1960s face derived from its 99 predecessor. Most of these cars didn't chug along for quite as many miles as their Volvo 240 countrymen, but that may be attributable more to the differences in driving style between Volvo and Saab owners. The word TURBO had magical connotations during the 1980s, and so most turbocharged cars of the era boasted big, obvious badging. Red car interiors were all the rage during the 1980s and 1990s. Try to imagine the vivid bordellitude of this upholstery before it faded beneath the blazing Colorado sun. Was it a runner when it arrived here? We'll never know. Born from jets, sure, though the original Saab jet was known as "the Flying Barrel" and wasn't especially graceful-looking. Best and Worst GM Cars

Thu, Apr 7 2022

Oh yes, because we just love receiving angry letters from devoted Pontiac Grand Am enthusiasts, we have decided to go there. Based on a heated group Slack conversation, the topic came up about the best and worst GM cars. First of all time, and then those currently on sale, and then just mostly a rambling discussion of Oldsmobiles our parents and grandparents owned (or engineered). Eventually, three of us made the video above. Like it? Maybe we can make more. Many awesome GM cars are definitely going unmentioned here, so please let us know your bests and worsts in the comments below. Mostly, it's important to note that this post largely exists as a vehicle for delivering the above video that dives far deeper into GM's greatest hits and biggest flops, specifically those from the 1980s and 1990s. What you'll find below is a collection of our editors identifying a best current and best-of-all-time choice, plus a worst current and worst-of-all-time choice. Comprehensive it is not, but again, comments. -Senior Editor James Riswick Best Current GM Vehicle Chevrolet Corvette We were flying by the seats of our pants a bit in this first outing and my notes were similarly extemporaneous. When it came time to tie it all together on camera, I failed spectacularly. Thank the maker for text, because this gives me the opportunity to perhaps slightly better explain my convoluted reasoning. I chose the C8 Corvette because it's simply overwhelmingly good, and it's merely the baseline from which this generation of Corvette will be expanded.  While the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing (more on that in a minute) is an amazing snapshot of GM's current performance standing and its little sibling so enraptured me that I went out and bought one, their existence is fleeting. Corvette will live on; forced-induction Cadillac sport sedans, not so much. So while all three are amazing machines when viewed in a vacuum, the Corvette stands above them as both a reflection of GM's current performance credentials and a signpost of what is to come. So, given the choice between the C8 and the 5V-Blackwing right now, I'd choose the C8. In 10 years, when the Blackwing is no longer in production and Corvette is in its 9th generation? Well, that might be a different story. Now, just pretend I said something even remotely that coherent when we get to the part of the video where I try to make an argument for the 5-V Blackwing as best GM car I've ever driven. Or just laugh at me while I ramble incoherently.

Man in a convertible drives in the rain with a Christmas tree

Mon, Dec 7 2015

A man in a convertible had his holiday cheer extinguished thanks to England's infamous weather. Nicholas Dodd saw this sad, soaked through couple while driving down the A38 near Plymouth, Devon, according to the Daily Mirror. Dodd told the publication he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw a Saab, top down, in a pouring rain storm. That's not all. The top was down because of the large Christmas tree wedged in the back seat. "We couldn't believe what we were seeing," Dodd said. "It was crazy - especially with the weather - but I guess he just wanted to get his Christmas tree home anyway he could." The Saab driver's female passenger also looks less than pleased by the sudden squall. "His missus was beside him but they didn't seem to find it as funny as we did," Dodd said. "He was just keeping his head down in a vain attempt to avoid the rain but was getting a real soaking." Dodd posted the video to Facebook, where commenters also had a good laugh at the soaking wet Saab owners. Weird Car News Saab Videos christmas rain
