Saab US bankruptcy plan gets legal green-light

It feels utterly bizarre that we're still talking about Saab, but Reuters is reporting that the bankrupt Swedish manufacturer's American arm has gotten approval from the US Bankruptcy Court to liquidate its assets and pay back creditors. As part of the plan, secured creditors like Ally Financial will receive full repayment. Unsecured creditors, consisting of those affected by abandoned leases and contracts will get anywhere from 25 to 82 percent of their money back.
There are currently $77 million in unsecured claims, according to Reuters, but that number doesn't include claims from former Saab dealers. Naturally, the entire affair is full of lawyers and legalese. A trust formed on the Saab side will be negotiating with creditors and their affiliates in an attempt to reduce claims against Saab. This sounds like the start of a long and sordid affair...

Saab-powered Ford is the most unlikely drift car we've seen

Yes, you read that headline correctly. It's supposed to be a Saab-powered Ford, and not the other way around (although we fully support the notion of a Sonnet with a Flathead V8). Apparently, some lunatic in the UK took an ass-less 1953 Ford Anglia, paired it with a turbocharged Saab engine, and tuned the entire thing to go drifting. We like it. Called Urchfab, it's the subject of Carfection's (the blokes formerly known as XCar) latest video. Aside from looking like an extra from the British version of Mad Max, it has a problem with grip, in that there's just too much of it. This car is a fabber's dream, as we get to see its unnamed owner fashion new bits and bobs for the suspension before having an unfortunate encounter with a wall at Castle Combe. Despite its departure from the US market and subsequent closure as an automaker, Saab's brand still resonates among a committed core of enthusiasts. The Saab 9-5, available in both sedan and wagon variants, was the upper model of a two-model lineup; the 9-3 sedan sat below it, while the GM-sourced 9-7 SUV didn't appear until 2005. Both the sedan and wagon 9-5 were surprisingly roomy, and the Aero variant, pictured here, incredibly fast. This for-sale example, located in North Carolina, is at 176,000 miles a well-used example in need of (at least) a repaint. But this is the perfect color combination, plus a combo of sport and utility. Buy it for around $2K, hold another $5,000 in reserve to cover the obvious needs, and you can enjoy a distinctive piece of practical and powerful transportation. Related Video:
