We are selling our 2001 Saab 9-5 SE Wagon as i will be inheriting my wife's Volvo.  I have used this car for a long work commute for the last year and it has performed perfectly.  We purchased it in October of 2012 with 120,000 miles on it.  Prior to my ownership it had two Colorado owners both of whom garaged the car. At 120,000 miles,  when we purchased it, I installed a new throttle body, new front brake rotors and pads, new swaybar end links links and new Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires. In addition, all of the other routine maintenance items were addressed such a flluids changed, etc. Every 5000 miles we change the oil with Mobil 1 synthetic oil.  At 140,000 miles it developed a whining sound which turned out to be the alternator. So we replaced the alternator as well as the serpentine belt. The timing belt and water pump were replaced by the previous owner at 105,000 miles so this car will be due to have the timing belt replaced in about 20,000 miles at 165,000 miles.

ITEMS OF NOTE

3.0L Turbo engine- in 80% interstate and 20% city driving I typically average 26-27 miles to the gallon. The most fun to drive up I-70 I have every driven.

Leather heated front and rear seats-  all seat heaters working properly

Traction control- works amazingly well.  My commute includes some mountain driving and I never felt like I needed all wheel drive.

Onstar system works properly with the antenna in tact. I am not a subscriber, but you could be it you chose to.

All pixels on the center display work properly as does the temperature, trip computer, average miles per gallon, etc.

Front and side air bags for the front seats.

The rear hatch does not support itself currently.  I have a replacement strut to swap in but have not spent the time to repair this item.

Half of the time on start up the system displays " Service Security System." Apparently, there is a rechargeable battery in the security system in case your main battery is disconnected or dead.  After years of use this will get low on charge and need to be replaced.  I priced this part and decided I could live with hitting CLEAR on the display occasionally as it does not effect the security system or the reliability of the car.

There is a slight coolant leak somewhere in the left front part of the engine bay. It does not drip and there is not a coolant odor however,  I have to top off the coolant about once per oil change.  It has been such a minor issue that I have not taken more time to address it.

The sunroof works properly, however, there is a clip on the wind screen the occasionally will pop up and get caught when closing.  I have not repaired this as I usually use it in flip up vent mode and it works just fine.

There are some wear spots on the driver's seat leather and some slight cracking on the front passenger seat leather.

This wagon has always been a Colorado car and has the rock chips in the hood to prove it. However,  as with all Colorado cars there is not any rust.

When I purchased the wagon, the front bumper valance had been split and the fog lights were both broken.  I have not taken the time to repair the valence other  than to use Gorilla Tape to hold the pieces together.  I replaced the existing fog lights with fillers from genuine SAAB parts and added a pair of  Hella 500FF for my mountain commuting.  These are wired into the factory switch and work very well.  I also think they give this SAAB a unique look.

The body is very straight given the age and mileage.  The only significant scratch is on the rear bumper on the passenger side that was there when we bought it.  When we purchased the wagon, I took it to my local paintless dent removal shop to have the few dings taken out.  You will be amazed at how straight this body is. The paint shines nicely- a result of many years of being kept in the garage.

The original spare tire has never been used. The original luggage net is in the rear compartment still in the original bag.

I have both keys with the built in key fob and the owner's manual.

Clear Colorado title in hand.

I welcome anyone who would like to come take a look and drive the car prior to bidding.

1999 Saab 9-3 Viggen is a Swede worth remembering on MotorWeek

Sun, Aug 30 2015

Today, Saab survives in name only after a protracted series of bankruptcies and attempted comebacks with new owners. At the turn of the millennium, however, the brand was still able to make some great cars, though. MotorWeek is showing off one of its very best in this vintage review for the 1999 9-3 Viggen. The jet-inspired Viggen was the pinnacle of everything Saab's engineers could do at the time. Starting with the standard 9-3, the suspension was hunkered down to improve handling and lower bodywork was added for better aerodynamics. Now that the exterior looked the part, the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder was tweaked to make 225 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. While that output may not sound hugely impressive by modern standards, those were strong numbers in the day, and the following model year made even more power. After some time behind the wheel of the VIggen, MotorWeek came away quite impressed with this Swede. While the Viggen might not have offered the full capability of high-performance, European contemporaries like the BMW M3, Saab really showed its strengths with this model.

Junkyard Gem: 1988 Saab 900

Tue, Nov 29 2016

Saab had a cult following in North America going back to the two-stroke Saab 96, but it wasn't until the 900 made its debut for the 1978 model year that the marque started to be considered a mainstream – if still a bit odd – brand here. Based on the venerable 99 but seeming a lot more modern, the 900 sold well to those who wanted to drive something sensibly Scandinavian but didn't want the stodginess of a Volvo. These cars were especially popular in Colorado, and I found this high-mile-but-solid '88 in a Denver self-service wrecking yard. Nearly made it to 300,000 miles, but it never got the chance. The key is still in the console-mounted ignition switch, and the steel lanyard indicates that this car went to the wrecking yard via an insurance-company or dealership-trade-in auction. Since the car has no major body damage, that means that its final owner traded it in – reluctantly, we hope – on another car, and nobody was willing to bid over scrap value for the elderly Swede at auction. Most such auctions have an arrangement with a local wrecking yard to take all the unsold cars for a set price, and that's what we can assume happened to this car. Chances are that it was still in running condition when it showed up here. You could get a 1988 Saab 900 with a three-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission, but I can't recall having ever seen one so equipped. Most Saab 900 buyers insisted on manuals. The engine in this car is a slant-four based on the same Triumph engine used in the Triumph TR7. By the 1980s, Saab had made sufficient improvements to the design that it was several orders of magnitude more reliable than its British Leyland ancestors. This one made 110 horses, which did an acceptable job of moving the car's 2,695 pounds. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Vampire Weekend burns for Saab

Thu, 21 Mar 2013

Or is it the other way around?
Could Vampire Weekend be trying to tell me something? A just-launched music video for the indie rock band's new single Diane Young features what looks like a pretty mint black Saab 900 Turbo Convertible being torched in slow-motion. In fact, with the exception of a brief, flickering cameo by a 900 three-door of a similar vintage, that's all that there is to the nearly three-minute long video. It's both sad and oddly beautiful.
Coincidentally, I have a similar-looking turbocharged black Saab convertible sitting in my garage, and I've been reluctantly pondering its sale this very week. Admittedly, mine is a later model (2001 9-3 Viggen), but tri-spokes and more tapered rump aside, it looks eerily identical. And while mine isn't mired in flames (I love it too much to torch it), through no fault of its own, it's been sitting motionless far too regularly. Thankfully, I see a better future for it than the droptop seen above.
