2005 Saab 9-3 Linear Sedan 4-door 2.0l - Transmission Work Needed on 2040-cars
Oreland, Pennsylvania, United States
For sale is my 2005 Saab 9-3 Linear 4-door sedan. I bought the car in 2005 and am the only owner. The car was used 99% for work. Over the past 3 weeks, I could feel some difference in the shifting in low gears. The warning "gearbox failure" came on about 2 weeks ago and I was told that the car most likely needs transmission work. I've read that a computer update might fix the problem, but don't bid based upon that. Assume that transmission work is needed. The car can still be driven, but has bumping in low gear. As indicated in the "defects" section above, the coolant also has a very slow leak. A small windshield chip was professionally repaired. The bottom of the front bumper is cracked (see picture). I took pictures of 2 small dings and a missing silver piece from the front grille...not sure what was there. There are some missing plastic bumper clips and clips under the hood...nothing that affects performance. About a month ago, there was wetness on the passenger side floor mat after it rained like crazy...I think from leaves between windshield and hood. One key fab partially works. The 2nd key fab shows wear on the rubber, but works fine. Keys within the fabs are in fine shape. Obviously there is other wear associated with 164K, but I listed everything I can think of.
Now for the positive. The car has new Continental Extreme DWS 215/55/ZR16 tires with only 3K on them (see installation papers vs. car mileage). The car has performed very well for me for 164K up to the transmission issue. I have all records of oil changes, tire rotations, maintenance, etc. The rims are the ones that came with the Aero...not the linear. I'm not sure why they were put on my car, unless it was an upgrade for the dealer. I recently replaced both front headlight fixtures (entire assembly) and the AC/heat blower motor and blower motor resistor. I knew before I bought the car that I didn't like the stereo. The day after I bought the car, I tapped the bass amp under the front seat and added a 2nd amp in the trunk(see pictures). I replaced all dashboard speakers (sides with Infiniti, center channel I'm forgetting what I put in). I also added 4 new speakers across the rear shelf. In the pictures, you'll see two 6x9 Cerwin Vega speakers and I can't remember what brand the 2 center speakers are. The only speakers not changed out are the 2 front door speakers. If you know anything about transmissions, this may be the car for you. You are welcome to see or drive the car...a short distance due to the warning light. Please take a look at my feedback and let me know if I can answer any questions. I will accept Paypal or cash payment. We'll exchange title and do tags 5 minutes from Oreland, PA. On Jan-22-14 at 09:55:35 PST, seller added the following information: The car has been sitting in my driveway for 2-3 weeks and I just tried to start it. I had to jump start it. The battery may need to be replaced...or it may just be the extreme weather we are experiencing. Not sure, but wanted to add this, as it just came up. |

Recharge Wrap-up: Renault's electric motors, BMW i3 is AM free
Wed, Jul 1 2015Why isn't AM radio offered in the BMW i3? Some drivers – particularly those interested in local traffic reports – have noticed its absence. BMW says that the electromagnetic interference from the electric drivetrain caused poor performance, and that while reception wasn't always terrible, it wasn't up to their standards. Rather than have customers complain to their dealers, who would be unable to do anything for them, BMW has disabled AM reception in the i3. Some customers have hacked their cars in order to enable the AM radio, despite possible warranty issues, and have found the reception to be acceptable. Read more at Green Car Reports. Saab's current parent company, National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), broke ground for production and R&D facilities in Tianjin, China. The facilities are part of joint ventures with the city of Tianjin and State Research Information Technology (SRIT). In addition to investments of over $190 million from SRIT and Teamsun, NEVS has received $1.6 billion in credit from the Bank of China to develop its business there. The new Tianjin factory will have a capacity of 200,000 new energy vehicles per year. The facility in Trollhattan, Sweden will provide manufacturing planning, training, and product supply for the Tianjin plant. Read more at Green Car Congress, and in the press release from NEVS. Renault is building the new R240 electric motor for the Zoe at its Cleon plant. The plant and its employees, which specialize in the Energy dCi diesel engine, have adapted to produce high volumes of the electric motor as well, including a 6,000 hours of training for the staff and millions of dollars in investments. "We aim to become the leading powertrain plant for the Alliance," says Cleon plant director Mendi Ammad. The plant is capable of producing 50,000 units of the R240 motor per year, with that number expected to double in the future. Read more about the plant and the production process the press release below. NEW ELECTRIC MOTOR STRENGTHENS POWERTRAIN EXPERTISE AT CLEON ZOE's new electric motor, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, is a 100% Renault motor manufactured at the French site of Cleon, already specialized in highly technical powertrain production. Until now, the flagship of the Cleon plant was the Energy dCi (130, 140, 160) internal-combustion engine. The diesel unit with advanced technological content has made a name for itself at Groupe Renault, the Alliance and with our partners.
Vampire Weekend singer responds to burning Saab controversy [w/video]
Fri, 29 Mar 2013Last week, we tipped you off about Vampire Weekend and their new music video for the song Diane Young, a short film that consists entirely of setting fire to two perfectly nice-looking Saab 900 automobiles. The indie rock band's video - viewable by scrolling down - predictably triggered the internet ire of classic car enthusiasts - Saabophiles in particular - and word of the unrest eventually got back to the band itself.
According to music site Spinner (nb: owned by Autoblog parent AOL), the group was "stunned" at the backlash - enough that lead singer Ezra Koenig felt compelled to respond himself. According to Koenig, the band was under the impression that their record company was "looking to purchase the cheapest, oldest cars possible; they weren't trying to buy a beautiful perfect condition car." By way of apology, Koenig even goes so far as to note that bandmate Rostam Batmanglij is a keen fan of Saab.
Other reports have claimed that the cars may have been purchased under false pretenses, sold by owners who "wanted to see them go to a nice new home," but Koenig takes issue with that characterization, countering that he understood that the cars had substantial electrical problems.
Son surprises mom with her dream car, a 1973 Saab 99
Wed, Aug 13 2014Often, it feels like the news is just a never-ending stream of one depressing headline after another. It can be so liberating to see something positive and uplifting every once in a while. Just look at the ecstatic expression on this mother's face after receiving her dream car from her son. Mom has some seriously quirky taste too: she isn't after a muscle car or a two-seat droptop; instead, it's a 1973 Saab 99 EMS in a very '70s shade of copper at the top of her wish list. According to the video, it took her son about a year to track down this hunk of Swedish steel and save up the money to purchase it. Though, judging from his mom's reaction, it was worth every penny. She puts together what's going on with the Saab pretty quickly and immediately starts swearing at her son – out of love, of course. If you're feeling a little blue, consider this a much-needed pick-me-up. Watching the unbridled joy of someone getting something that they always wanted just feels wonderful.
