Rolls-Royce Phantom celebrates decade of decadence

Ten years ago, Rolls-Royce opened its Goodwood manufacturing facility and handed over the keys to the very first Phantom. Back then, parent company BMW was cranking out Phantom sedans at the blistering pace of one unit per day. By the end of 2003, that number had tripled, and today, the Goodwood plant builds a total of 20 Phantoms in sedan, coupe, drophead and extended-wheelbase models during a single day's working hours. Originally, there were fewer than 400 workers on staff responsible for hand-building the big cruisers, but now the plant boasts over 1,400 craftsmen, with 100 of those positions added in 2012 alone.
Rolls-Royce boasts one of the lowest staff turnover rates of any brand in the industry, thanks in part to a successful apprenticeship and internship program, and the company notes 80 percent of its workers live within 15 miles of the facility. This is the very last Rolls-Royce Phantom VII

Rolls-Royce built its very last Phantom VII today. The model was first introduced in 2003 and ends with this one-of-a-kind long-wheelbase model that will go to the unnamed Rolls-Royce collector who commissioned it. The car itself is themed around 1930s-era ships, which is in turn a nod to the era of the first Phantom I, launched in 1925. Immediately upon looking at the car's "Blue Velvet" paint scheme, you can see the oceanic influence. The color is accompanied by coach lines with a ship motif, and the tires have white lines to complement it. Inside, the car features the beautiful marquetry wood trim the brand has become known for. The dashboard shows a '30s-era ship with a map of North America and Europe in the background. Further maritime highlights include dash clocks modeled after ship radios, and embroidery on the "Powder Blue" leather that mimics the look of ocean waves. The front dash clock has a movable bezel for different time zones, and Rolls-Royce says the carpeting has been cut to look like a ship's wake. While this generation of the Phantom is at an end, it's by no means the end of the line for the name. We've seen prototypes of the Phantom VIII running around, and Rolls-Royce has openly said that a successor is coming. We expect the new generation will only be available in short- and long-wheelbase sedans to start, and will probably be revealed sometime this year, perhaps as soon as the Geneva Show in March, or as late as the Pebble Beach Concours in August. Rolls-Royce rolls out special Al-Adiyat edition in the Middle East

Rolls-Royce regularly makes special editions for one market or another. And lets face it: most of them are in the Middle East, or more specifically along the Persian Gulf. But their names don't always translate well to English, even for an English automaker. The last one, for example, was characterized as a Mysore. And this latest one is for Adiyats. Al-Adiyat is actually what this latest special run of Rolls-Royces are called, taking its name from the Arabic word describing the sound hoofs make when they hit the ground. It's a limited edition of just ten coupes, including nine Wraiths and the one and only Phantom Coupe you see here. The collection takes its inspiration from horses, "with motifs of reigns and horses, while gold-plated horseshoe stamps make a striking statement upon the clock and treadplates." The look is completed (on the Phantom at least) with a bright red paintjob that continues inside with red leather, carpets and headliner. In short, it's not for subtle tastes, but we don't doubt that Rolls will sell each and every one, assuming it hasn't already.
