Rolls-Royce in America

On October 18, 1919, Rolls-Royce of America, Inc., was launched in Springfield. In 1921, the first American Rolls-Royce, the Springfield Silver Ghost, was completed. Gradually the American car adopted refinements more suited to the American driver: left-hand drive, three-speed transmission, American Bosch or Westinghouse six-volt electrical systems, fuel pumps rather than the British sibling’s “Autovac,” drum headlamps, and tubular bumpers.

Most American Silver Ghosts were bodied by two coachbuilders: Rolls-Royce Custom Coachwork or Brewster and were available in a variety of styles, from formal limousines and town cars, to enclosed sedans and open sporting styles like this Piccadilly. Many Rolls- Royce enthusiasts believe the American cars’ chassis and bodies are superior in build quality to the British examples despite a successful blending of the best of British and American designs. In later economically challenged years, Rolls-Royce of America was gradually liquidated until the doors were finally closed in October 1936.

One of the most popular American Rolls- Royce car bodies was the Piccadilly roadster, a two-seater convertible with side curtains and a comfortable “rumble” seat. Archival sources indicate about 79 Silver Ghosts and 20 Phantom I Rolls-Royce cars were fitted with the sporting Piccadilly body.

Rolls-Royce occasionally selected one of the later series models to use as a trials car. As newer, more innovative components became available, the company would test them at the factory. Many times, as in the case of this example, some of those tests were so successful they were incorporated into the newer models.

This Car

S335RL was manufactured in June 1926, used for two years as a company demonstrator and trials car, then completely refreshed before being sold to its first owner, A.J. Davis of St. Louis, Missouri, on December 28, 1928. The list price was $13,450, twice the average American’s annual income in 1928. Edward M. Bergen, the second owner, bought the Piccadilly in 1937. Subsequent owners were John B. Davis of Florissant, Missouri, and then Carroll Vail, also of St. Louis and then-president of the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club. Mr. Vail sold it to Conrad Karras of Great Notch, New Jersey, and Naples, Florida, who took the car on the 1973 Alpine Tour. Dennis Nicotra of Woodbridge, Connecticut, bought the car in 1986. In 1987, S335RL was acquired by noted Rolls-Royce collector and small-arms manufacturer William B. Ruger, in whose care it remained until it was sold from his estate in 2002. The 75-year-old car was then mechanically restored, which included fitting two new cylinder blocks at Frank Cooke’s Vintage Garage. Brakes, kingpins, front axle, and gearbox were also rebuilt. The next owner, Lyle Patterson, Mr. Ruger’s collection manager, entered the Piccadilly Roadster in the 2003 European Alpine Tour, then several Florida concours events, including Amelia Island and Boca Raton, in 2009.

In 2006, a new stainless steel exhaust system and an overdrive were added so the car could be used for modern touring. The front seats were re-trimmed in black leather, and the body was refinished in black over gray with black wings.

Recently serviced, this reliable, stunningly handsome Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster is ready for its fortunate new owner to tour, display, and to ultimately enjoy.

BMW chooses Tesla's Supercharger network for its future EVs

Wed, Oct 18 2023

BMW, following the lead of many other automakers, has confirmed this week that it will adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS), delivering EV drivers in the U.S. and Canada access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. The move goes a step further in cementing NACS as the universal system of choice. The conversion to Tesla plugs will begin formally in 2025 for BMW, as well as its Mini and Rolls-Royce brands in the U.S. market. Those marques now use the Combined Charging System (CCS) for EV charging. “It is our top priority to ensure that our drivers have easy access to reliable, fast charging," said Sebastian Mackensen, President & CEO, BMW of North America. NACS, which began as began as TeslaÂ’s proprietary charging connection, rapidly has become the new standard in its native land after Ford announced it would adopt it this past summer. This was quickly followed by General Motors. Since then, brands including Rivian, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, Polestar, and Jaguar have climbed d on board NACS. Earlier this month, the Hyundai Motor Group announced it would also provide customers with the NACS connector across its namesake, Kia, and Genesis marques. BMW says it will work across its three marques in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition to TeslaÂ’s charging network by early 2025, and owners will be able to pay for charging using their respective vehicle brandÂ’s own app. Related Video: How to charge a non-Tesla on a Supercharger

Rolls-Royce releases sketch of Phantom Drophead Coupe Bespoke Waterspeed Collection

Wed, 05 Feb 2014

A limited-edition Rolls-Royce Phantom is something of an oxymoron. The company only sold 3,630 cars last year, and even fewer of those were its flagship Phantom. However, that isn't keeping the company from regularly revealing even more limited editions of its already hyper-exclusive cars. This is precisely the case with the new Phantom Drophead Coupé Bespoke Waterspeed Collection, a forthcoming model limited to 35 examples.
The special models are inspired by a famous speedboat race on September 1, 1937, between the United States and Great Britain on Lake Maggiore on the Swiss-Italian border. The British fielded the Bluebird K3 hydroplane boat powered by a massive supercharged V12 Rolls-Royce R-Type engine with Sir Malcolm Campbell at the helm. All that displacement shot the sleek watercraft to 129.5 miles per hour, claiming a new world waterspeed record in the process.
For the special commemorative Drophead Coupé model that celebrates "a seminal act of British daring and endeavor," Rolls-Royce is finishing the convertible in Maggiore Blue paint with a brushed steel hood and tonneau cover, along with inlaid wood trim. Rolls is not announcing an official release date or price for the special cars yet, but they are going on sale before the end of the year. Scroll down for the whole story about the car's inspiration.

eBay Find of the Day: Andy Warhol's 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow

Sun, 25 May 2014

Andy Warhol is one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th Century. With hits like his famous Campbell's soup cans and Marilyn Monroe portraits, he is likely the first name you think of in association with the pop art movement. He isn't known for being an auto enthusiast, though, but maybe that's not entirely the case - there was his BMW M1 art car, after all. Now, Warhol's 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is up for auction on eBay Motors.
According the seller, Warhol never had a driver's license, but he still wanted to own a luxurious car. It's claimed that he occasionally had his famous friends, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, chauffeur him around in the Rolls. Following Warhol's death in 1987, the car was auctioned for $77,000, and since then it has only been sold to one additional owner.
The Rolls is painted Walnut and Mason's Black, which appears closer to a shade of brown in these photos, with a black leather interior. The engine is the company's' popular 6.75-liter V8 with a three-speed automatic transmission, and there are just 56,000 miles on this luxurious classic. The seller is including copies of original purchase order from Rolls-Royce and the title to Warhol Enterprises to prove the famous artist's ownership of the car, plus all of its service records.
