Rolls Royce unveiled an entirely new modern design for 1980 after a long 16 year run of the previous Silver Shadow. Although not entirely new, the Silver Spur/Spirit featured many new upgrades in the way of technology, electronics, engine management systems and all around comfort. The familiar and venerable 6.75 litre V8 engine was placed in the new model matted to the GM sourced THM 3-speed and the companies completely revised self leveling hydraulic rear suspension. The new system was very similar to the previous Silver Shadow’s suspension but Rolls Royce used a Girling automatic hydraulic ride height control system with gas charged shock absorbers making the ride far superior and more reliable than the Silver Shadows. The Silver Spur was the long wheelbase model which sold alongside the short wheelbase Silver Spirit model. The two new cars marked a very important time for Rolls Royce/Bentley, they were to be the platforms of the new models that would come for the next two decades.

Up for sale is a stunning 1982 Rolls Royce Silver Spur Saloon finished in its original Magnolia paint work over original Brown Connolly leather with contrasting Magnolia piping and a Brown Everflex roof. This Silver Spur left the Crewe production line in January of 1982 and was invoiced to North America where it was then sent to Albers Rolls Royce in Zionsville Indiana. The car sold to its first owner in early 1982 and lived in Franklin Park Illinois with the first owner until moving to Arizona in 1988 with the second and final owner. The car has been in Arizona most of its life and has traveled a mere 27,330 actual miles from brand new. The original Magnolia Lacquer paint is in exceptional condition and does not show any scratches, dents or dings anywhere on the body. The body is laser straight and free from any rust or corrosion or any damage. All of the chrome and trim are in exceptional condition and show almost no signs of wear or age. The Everflex roof is all original and still in excellent condition and free from any scrapes, tears, fade or damage. The Brown Connolly leather interior is in beautiful condition, the leather is still soft and supple and all of the piping is intact and free from any damage or wear. The drivers seat shows extremely minimal creasing and shows no signs of damage, cracking or fade. All of the wood is absolutely exceptional and free from any fading or cracking anywhere. Even the door rails are near showroom condition. The original headliner is beautiful and free from any damage or stains and all of the original carpet show extremely minimal use. The dashboard is free from any wear or damage and the leather is still very soft and free from any shrinkage. All of the interior switch gear and trim are all in excellent condition showing almost no use. All of the electrical equipment on the car is still in proper working order including all of the dash lights, interior lights, exterior lights and all turn signals and side marker lights. The power antenna only goes up part way but still works. All of the windows, door locks, power seats, radio and AC are all in proper working order. The car just had a brand new battery placed in the car and the tires and brakes are all showing about 75%-80% life left. This Silver Spur starts right up and idles superbly without any hesitation or smoking. The car goes into gear with ease and shifts through all of its gears without any hesitation or issues. All of the hydraulic brakes and suspension are in proper working order and the rear leveling suspension levels as it was designed. The brakes feel solid and free from any fade or issues. The suspension feels excellent on the car, very smooth and free from any kinds of noises. The steering is very tight and free from any drifting or pulling. This car has just received a major tune up and service from a trained Rolls Royce technician and is ready to go. This Rolls Royce comes with all of its original owners manuals, dealer books, service books, warranty books and even key card. Two sets of original Rolls Royce keys, a complete set of original tools, jack and spare all present with the car. This is one of the nicest Silver Spurs on the market and is a completely unmolested complete original car.

Rolls-Royce design chief Giles Taylor leaves the company

Thu, Jun 7 2018

Another surprise executive departure on the sceptred isle: Rolls-Royce design chief Giles Taylor has left the car company and the parent BMW Group. Rolls-Royce's 52-word statement on Taylor's sudden exit said only that Taylor departed "to pursue alternative business interests." The news comes three days after Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales abruptly quit to become CEO of an English classic car restorer. Taylor leaves less than a month after Rolls-Royce introduced its brand-redefining Cullinan SUV, and before the auto show season where he would have been expected to lead the discussion on the Cullinan's genesis and detailing. According to his LinkedIn page, Taylor began his career with five years as an exterior designer at Peugeot, then graduated to a 14-year stint as chief designer at Jaguar; among other projects, he led the interior design of the 2003 Jaguar XJ before becoming chief exterior designer of the 2009 XJ. He moved from Coventry to Cheshire in 2011, becoming head of exterior design at Rolls-Royce. Just one year into the job, former director of design Ian Cameron left the company, and Taylor took over in 2012. His tenure has included the creation of retail products like the new Phantom and Dawn, one-offs like the Sweptail, concepts like the Next 100, and even a bespoke Paddington Bear. Rolls-Royce says it will announce a new designer "in due course." If the automaker looks in-house, it could tap Pavle Trpinac, now a senior exterior designer credited with the lines on the Wraith and the latest Phantom. Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II headed to Geneva

Tue, 25 Feb 2014

Rolls-Royce is not a brand that replaces its vehicles with any great frequency. It expands its lineup, sure: what started with just the Phantom saloon has since grown to include extended wheelbase models, coupes and convertibles, not to mention the addition of the Ghost, followed by the Ghost EWB and the Wraith fastback. What Rolls does to keep its models fresh, however, is spruce them up with a Series II.
The Phantom family underwent just such a treatment a couple of years ago, and now Goodwood appears to be preparing to do the same with the Ghost. At least, that is, going by this teaser image it released with only the line, "After five years as the cornerstone of Rolls-Royce's sustainable growth success worldwide, this mid-life update is a showcase for the most recent technological advances from Rolls-Royce enrobed in a considered exterior design revision."
The arrival of the Ghost Series II at the Geneva Motor Show this year would put it significantly ahead of schedule for when Rolls updated the Phantom. That model arrived in 2003 and was followed by the Series II in 2012, giving the original a nine-year run virtually unchanged. The Ghost, however, only reached production in 2010, so introducing a Series II now would shorten that lifecycle to just four years.

Rolls-Royce mulling V16 roadster, SUV

Fri, 22 Feb 2013

Rolls-Royce may be working on a new, mega-powerful roadster for 2017. CAR reports the convertible would conceivably boast a V16 engine. Of course, the report gets a little muddled here, with CAR saying the engine would be very similar to that of the one that powers the Bugatti Veyron - the French machine makes use of a W16 mill. Even so, the article says the Rolls-Royce version could put down around 700 horsepower. Design wise, we're told the creation will feature a suitably long nose with the passenger compartment pushed far to the rear.
Of course, 2017 is a long way off, and the thought of a 16-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine bowing under the crush of ever more stringent government fuel efficiency and emission regulations seems unlikely. We'll just put this one in the wait-and-see file for the time being. In the interim, you can hop over to CAR for a closer look at the magazine's rendering of the would-be roadster. If a V16 convertible does happen, look for a smug look on Rowan Atkinson's face.
Oh, and about that SUV? There's not much to report, though CAR does note that officials are keeping a close eye on rival Bentley and its plans for a luxury utility vehicle. Rolls brand boss Harald Krüger has even gone so far as to admit "we're regularly debating whether to take action."
