Rolls-Royce says SUV will in fact be called Cullinan, releases photos

We have known the upcoming Rolls-Royce luxury SUV is called is called Cullinan for a while now, but it took until today for the manufacturer to officially acknowledge the name. Referring to the quite simply enormous Cullinan diamond, Rolls-Royce says the name befits the new "high-bodied vehicle," carefully steering around the SUV moniker. "The name Cullinan has been hiding in plain sight since we revealed it as the project name some years ago," says Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos. "It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product. Cullinan is a motor car of such clarity of purpose, such flawless quality and preciousness, and such presence that it recalibrates the scale and possibility of true luxury. One of the photos depicts a test mule climbing a muddy hill, a territory unclaimed by Rolls-Royces except for ones modified by privateer rally teams. The Cullinan, based on a new proprietary aluminum spaceframe, is expected to be unveiled by late summer 2018, with deliveries starting in 2019. The vehicle's introduction is planned to lift the brand's yearly sales to 5,000 units per year, as they fell to 3,362 in 2017. Rolls-Royce Spectre EV is revealed, and it's production-bound

Rolls-Royce has formally announced plans to introduce a battery-electric coupe. Dubbed Spectre, the British super-luxe automaker's first EV will begin deliveries in late 2023, which has now become a key milestone in Rolls-Royce's roadmap to full electrification by the end of the decade. Apart from the name and layout, Rolls is being stingy with specifics, telling us only that, despite what appears to be a somewhat familiar silhouette, this is an all-new model built on the company's latest architecture, like Phantom, Ghost and Cullinan. Spectre is not merely a derivative of the Wraith, RR says. And with good reason, because Wraith was engineered around the essence of its V12. Spectre's character, we expect, will be defined by its near-silent, vibration-free electric powertrain, which makes for a very different acoustic backdrop, but that's a challenge Rolls-Royce engineers are prepared – arguably even predestined – to overcome. Even more than a century ago, both Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce were fascinated by electric powertrains. The automaker even shared some of Rolls' impressions of an EV he drove in April 1900 from Connecticut-based manufacturer Columbia:  "The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean," he noted. "There is no smell or vibration, and they should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged. Rolls-Royce has been testing its upcoming Spectre electric luxury coupe for a while now, and it's been wearing a camouflage wrap covered in marketing phrases. In both traditional spy photos and in manufacturer-provided ones, we've had a decent preview of the car. Now we finally get a look inside thanks to one of our spy photographers.  While some automakers have taken the opportunity to try bold new interior designs with their electric cars, Rolls-Royce seems to be staying the.course with the Spectre. The design is very traditional, with a tall, wide dashboard that doesn't stick out far from the windshield. The vents and controls look just like the ones in the current Phantom sedan. The steering wheel is very similar, but the upper spokes are now closer to 9 and 3. Perhaps Rolls-Royce designers felt it looked a little sportier. It does still have a column shifter, even as an electric car. The instrument cluster appears to be fully digital, though, which is one of the few less traditional aspects of the cabin. The Spectre will be built on the current Rolls-Royce architecture, which underpins all of the brand's models. It features loads of aluminum and will be the most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce yet with a coefficient of drag of 0.25. But specs such as power and range remain a secret.
