German carmakers recall 630,000 diesel vehicles in Europe
Fri, Apr 22 2016Mercedes, Opel, Porsche, and Volkswagen will recall over 630,000 cars in Europe, according to reports Friday. No diesel car has been able to get under the legal emissions limit in real-world driving, according to a German government investigation. While only Volkswagen Group has been using a specific "defeat device", other carmakers have been playing with their exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems. Depending of the manufacturer, the systems have been cut off at a certain temperature. In a specific test cycle the systems operate to fulfill the legal requirements, but in everyday use the limits are exceeded. According to the magazine Der Spiegel, the supplier Bosch is behind this programming and has provided it to all German automakers. The mentioned carmakers have announced recalls, but many other manufacturers are also mentioned by name in the report, including Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Dacia, Fiat, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Nissan, Renault, and Suzuki. PSA Group, which produces Peugeot, Citroen, and DS cars, declared yesterday that its offices were raided following an emissions investigation. Noted Porsche collector Magnus Walker learns what a TED Talk is firsthand
Wed, 23 Jul 2014Porsche collector Magnus Walker has the name and looks of a Viking, but once he starts talking about his life story and what drives him, he's an absolutely fascinating guy. Walker recently gave a Ted Talk at a Tedx conference at UCLA and claimed he didn't really understand the idea behind the speeches. You would never know it, though. Walker is as gifted a speaker as he is a talented restorer of some seriously cool Porsches.
Walker's talk is titled "Go with Your Gut Feeling," and it amounts to his autobiography. He recounts his birth in England, dropping out of school at 15 and moving to the US at 19. Once in Los Angeles, he started selling second-hand clothes and grew it into a fashion business.
Of course, what makes him interesting to us is his passion for Porsches. He fell in love with them when he saw a white 911 as a child at the Earl's Court Motor Show in England, but Walker waited until the '90s to buy his first one. From there he started racing and eventually restoring them. Since the documentary Urban Outlaw about him was released, Magnus has become famous for the love of the brand.
Ex-F1 driver Mark Webber has tough life, shakes down Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Fri, Apr 24 2015It's good work if you can get it, and Mark Webber has got it. The works driver for the Porsche World Endurance Championship Team was apparently asked to moonlight in a video shoot for the company's new 911 GT3 RS at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, and what do you know, he complied. They don't appear to be going too quickly, and a racing driver asked to rein in what will be one of the most blistering cars we'll see this year must be very serious work, because Webber doesn't appear to be smiling at all. We'll guess there's a big smile on the inside, though, and some tales to tell to his Porsche teammates at the next WEC race. Maybe the next time we see the 911 GT3 RS at the 'Ring, it will be doing the timed lap we're all waiting for. Related Video:
