1987 Porsche 944s on 2040-cars
Brighton, Tennessee, United States
Up for sale is a 1987 Porsche 944S. The car is in excellent condition but does have some minor maintenance issues to be addressed as well as a few cosmetic blemishes. Because of several minor problems the buyer will have to address I am selling the car at a lower price than it could reach if these problems were addressed. I purchased the car to either re-sell or to keep but I'm moving within the next several months and the remaining attention it needs will have to come from the new owner. I am the third owner of a maraschino red metallic Porsche 944S with a 5-speed manual and the 16-valve DOHC motor as the "S" designates. This listing will last until a buyer either purchases the car, or till 24-hours from the end of the online auction. Best offers will be considered within reason, please don't waste my or your time with offers lower than the current bid. I will try to completely describe the areas of the vehicle and any issues that will need to be addressed by the buyer, but I will doubtlessly leave something out so please if you have any questions send me an email and I will try to respond with an answer and any pictures requested as soon as I can. I will outline each section of the car bellow in very fine detail so please read each section carefully. If you find I've described something that isn't pictured please let me know and I'll upload pictures of the addressed description as soon as possible. Body and Exterior: The paint and exterior of the car are in excellent condition with the exception of a few blemishes. There are several larger sections on the fiberglass front air dam where the paint has flexed and chipped away along with several cracks and scraped sections, very common with these cars. On the rear bumper caps there is one smaller piece that has been worn away and some speckling on the same piece on the left side. The car has a number of small stone chips on the front, and several small spots on the roof and front headlamp cover where it's been bumped leaving a small unbroken depression. There are also rock chips on the wing mirrors, and hazing around door handles, gas cap, and the rear hatch keyhole. The clearcoat is largely without blemish but if you look closely you can find small places where tar or other contaminates have left marks, there are also minor scuffs from the usual wear and tear of a car this age. I have handwashed the car only and used a lite coat of carnauba wax to protect the paint. I have not buffed or polished the car, nor attempted to fix any of the minor issues in order to let the buyer address the problems in the manner they see fit, the rock chips cant doubtlessly be largely solved by touchup, but the front air dam may need to be repainted to completely address the issues. The glass is all undamaged, there are several hairline cracks in the right headlamp lens, and one in the left fog lamp. The wheels are the original Phone-Dials with painted center caps, they are largely in good condition but do have some scrapes. The side trim pieces which denote the car as 16-valve have come unstuck and fallen off over the years and will need to be purchased and repainted to the body color to match. Engine and Mechanical: I purchased the car several years ago and during that time I have worked on it off and on in spare time. When I purchased the car it was non-running due to timing belt failure. I have since rebuilt the top end with 12/16 valves needing replacement, I also installed new valve seals during the process as well as new timing and balance shaft belts. Apart from the rebuild of the head there have been a handful of parts necessary to replace including a new valve cover seal and cam seal and fuel filter, the tank and fuel lines were also drained. The car is currently running and has good compression and oil pressure after the rebuild. It is still not running as well as I would like due to an injector issue. It will likely need to either have the injectors rebuilt, or replaced. In addition, the distributor rotor, cap, and wires will need to be replaced. The battery is new, the tires have been on the car since I purchased it and seem to be in acceptable shape but given their age and quality I would recommend replacing them. The owner stated when I purchased the car that the odometer had ceased to function shortly after he purchased the car. He estimated that because the car was being driven regularly that its mileage is between one hundred, and one hundred and twenty-five thousand miles. Judging by the condition of numerous components as well as the timing belt failure, which appears to be the original, I would estimate that this is correct. The odometer currently reads seventy-three thousand miles. The car is not currently registered to drive on the road, so it will need to be trailered to its destination. During the process of rebuilding a piece of the accelerator linkage which is described as a deflection roller Part No. 94411022200 turned up missing. I ordered one which ended up getting lost in shipping and according to online parts suppliers it could take several weeks to have one shipped. This affects the feel of the throttle but I have circumvented the problem for the time being for the sake of drivability, it will be between $15 and $25 to purchase another. During re-assembly one of the valve cover bolts was over torqued. I purchased another but I haven't bothered to replace it. It doesn't cause any leaks or other issues but I would rather mention even small problems. The A/C system is untested. It may simply need to be checked and re-charged but all I know is that the compressor does engage when the A/C is toggled on. The cruise control is also untested. There are several rust holes behind the exhaust tip and before the muffler. Interior: The interior of the car is in nearly perfect shape. There is one wear spot on the side bolstering of the driver's seat, and one spot on the passenger's seat where the stitching has separated. The car has a Pioneer sound system that was professionally installed, although the original radio is included. The face of the A/C switch is missing, there is a smudged brown stain on the center armrest. The car comes with dealer installed carpeted floor mats. The sunroof, windows, electric mirrors are all fully functional. The dash is uncracked. If you intend to purchase the car outright via the local listing, and plan on traveling to pick it up, I require a $500 non-refundable deposit to cancel the online auction and the rest in cash on pickup. The same applies to the winner of the online auction. I can store the car almost indefinitely but I will only be available in person for the next several months. I reserve the right to end the item early regardless of bid status. Please contact me through the local listing if you have any questions pertaining to purchasing the car directly. If you are local and would like to see the car send me an email and we can arrange a time. Again please contact me if you have any questions. |

Porsche offers detuned Boxster and Cayman 211 in Europe
Mon, 15 Sep 2014Looking at a new Porsche Boxster? First of all, we commend you on your choice, because in its latest iteration, the Boxster has sped out from under the shadow of the 911 and into its own. But now to choose: do you get the base model with 265 horsepower, the Boxster S with 315 hp, or the top-of-the-line Boxster GTS with 330 hp? It's a daunting question, considering the $10k+ price gap between each model that you could put into the gas-and-rubber jar. Same goes for the Cayman, albeit with ten more horses across the board. But as if that's not confusing enough, there appears to be another player on the field. (That is, at least, in certain European markets.)
Appearing on the company's Belgian and Norwegian sites are the Boxster 211 and Cayman 211. As you might have guessed, they pack a less substantial 211 horsepower, undercutting what we know as the base models. Instead of using a smaller engine, though, the Boxster and Cayman 211 get the same 2.7-liter boxer six, just with less power.
As a result, they're a bit slower off the line: the Boxster 211 takes between 6.1 and 6.4 seconds to get to 62, depending on exact specifications, compared to the 5.5- to 5.8-second range for the 265-hp Boxster, while the Cayman 211 is quoted at 6.2 seconds versus the 275-hp Cayman's 5.4 to 5.7 seconds. Fuel consumption and emissions, on the other hand (and as you'd expect), are better in the 211. But while Porsche Norway charges around $10k less for the 211 models, Porsche Belgium charges the same for the 211 models as it does for the next most powerful versions (from which they appear to be visually indistinguishable).
2015 24 Hours of Le Mans live race report
Sat, Jun 13 2015Check back regularly for more race updates every few hours. No, you don't need to stay up for the entire 24 Hours of Le Mans, but if you want to catch any of the action, Autoblog friend Reilly Brennan has a handy guide. And to keep you up to speed on the latest race events, we'll be posting live from Le Mans with regular race reports.Hour 1: Five laps in, Audi breaks up the three Porsches at the front, with the #19 919 Hybrid, driven by Nico Hulkenburg, passed by all three R18s. Hulkenburg eventually took back fifth position only to fall back again after the first pit stop. Meanwhile, clutch trouble kept the #23 Nissan GTR-LM in the pits until 15 minutes into the race. The other two Nissans were forced to start at the back of the grid after failing to the meet the 110 percent qualifying speed regulation. At the end of the first hour, just 7.5 seconds separated the first six cars. Then the factory team #92 Porsche GTE car caught fire, with the the #13 Rebellion P1 car taking frontal damage in the ensuing carnage. With the safety car out, the field is once again bunched up.Hour 2: The slugfest between Audi and Porsche continues, with neither side backing off. Halfway through the second hour the #7 R18 passes both leading Porsches for the top position. After another round of pits stops Porsche regains the lead until lap 30, when the Audi overtake once again and quickly pulls out a three-second gap. Nico Hulkenburg passes the other two Audis to join his Porsche teammates. At the beginning of the third hour it's Audi #7, Porsche #17, #18, and #19, followed by Audi #8 and #9. 33 seconds separates this group, with Toyota a minute back from the front car.Hour 3: On track the action refuses to stop. Although it's early, Audi is looking strong with the overall lead in the #7. What's more is that the Audis run four stints per set of tires, while the Porsche cars have to change rubber every third stop. But after a quick refueling, the lead R18 gets a tire puncture and comes back in 3 laps later, allowing Porsche to take over the top two spots. Then as the hour closes out a yellow flag causes traffic to bunch up and the #8 Audi gets stuck with nowhere to slow down. Driver Loic Duval dives for the side of the road but hits the guard rail and careens across the track, damaging the front and rear bodywork. The rest of the car is still intact, though, and once in the pits Audi replaces the entire front and rear of that in only three minutes.
2014 Porsche Panamera Turbo S is a 911 Turbo for the family man
Thu, 21 Nov 2013In the event that the Porsche Panamera Turbo's 520 horsepower and 189-mile-per-hour top speed aren't enough to sate the appetite of the speed freak, Porsche has just given the auto show debut to the faster, more powerful Panamera Turbo S.
With 570 horsepower being pumped from a 4.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8, the Panamera Turbo S promises even faster acceleration, hitting 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, a 0.3-second improvement over the standard Turbo. The top speed, meanwhile, climbs to 192 mph, which is kind of ridiculous for a car with four doors and a trunk.
Other enhancements that come with this Panamera's extra syllable include carbon-ceramic brakes and the entirety of Porsche's active chassis systems, including Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control and Porsche Active Suspension Management. The performance goodies come standard, but that doesn't mean the Panamera Turbo S is cheap.
