 Garnet Red 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo (951): 116,xxx miles.

This car has an engine issue -- there is a knocking noise (possible piston slap), and has low compression on cylinder #2. This should be a considered a non-running car, but would be a great project for someone willing to do the work (either repair or an engine swap). I just don't have the time or interest anymore.

I've had the car for about 6 years now, and am the third owner. It has always been garaged, has only seen rain by accident (it's not a daily driver), and has never been driven in the snow.

This would be an excellent project for someone!

THE CAR'S BUYER WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PICK UP AND TRANSPORTATION. Considering that this should be regarded as a non-runner, it will be necessary to have the car transported.

The good:

I have every service record, in a binder, dating back to 1990.

The car looks great. Except for some blemishes (listed below), the garnet red paint looks deep and lustrous, and in a rare, attractive color. The paint looks great -- it has a level of gem-like shine that is rare amongst 25 year old-cars!.

Fuchs alloys!

The interior is in fantastic shape. The beige leather upholstery is nearly flawless. Seats look and feel perfect. Seat electronics work perfectly. The black dash has only 2 micro cracks near one of the vents, barely visible (I'm serious: you can hardly see them) -- none of the dash cracks that plague most 1980s Porsches. The red carpets are worn, but still look good.

Before this engine issue, he car ran great. Purrs like a kitten. While driving, the engine pulls strongly, the transmission shifts precisely, and the handling is impeccable.

The car is FAST. See below for modifications, but it accelerates like a scalded cat, and pulls strongly in all gears.

The car has pretty much brand-new Yokohama S-Drive tires: 205/55/16 front, 225/50/16 rear. Only 300 miles or so to date on these tires, which were installed

Car had new clutch assembly professionally installed in 2009 (about 7000 miles ago).

The car doesn't leak any fluids.

Modifications
Lindsey Racing Boost Enhancer
951MAX Chip Set
Lindsey Racing 3.0 Bar Fuel Pressure Regulator
Shimmed Wastegate
Billet Aluminum Blow-off Valve
New Vacuum Lines
Strut Tower Brace

The not-so-good
Paint has a couple minor imperfections. Besides the typical stone chips, there is a spot on the hood where it appears that the hood was closed on a tool or something, and the paint is slightly cracked. I have no idea when this happened. There is also a smaller, barely-noticeable similar crack in the front valance, near a turn signal. The rear bumper ends also have some paint chippage due to, I believe, someone tapping the bumper of the car while it was parked in a parking lot. All in all, though, the paint looks great -- it has a level of gem-like shine that is rare amongst 25 year old-cars!.

The rear wiper motor doesn't work, and hasn't worked since I've owned the car.

The sunroof motor needs to be repaired. The sunroof can be installed and taken out of the car, but the part of the motor that lifts up the back of it doesn't work.

The Fuchs alloys were stained by using the wrong type of wheel cleaner. They look fine except very close-up.

Translogic 166: Porsche 918 Spyder

Mon, Dec 15 2014

In the same month that Porsche announced that its 918 Spyder is sold out, Translogic is getting its first (and likely last) shot at the plug-in hybrid hypercar. Our drive starts off in a very civilized fashion as we tour the 918 Spyder's e-power and hybrid modes, but the fun really starts when the naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 engine roars to life in sport and race hybrid modes, augmenting the electric motors with an additional 608 horsepower for a total of 887. We even attempt an impromptu 0-60 test to see if we can match Porsche's gobsmacking official time of 2.5 seconds, but sadly we don't have the room to make a run on its 214-mph top speed. Watch as Translogic host Jonathon Buckley pilots this Porsche around an airstrip in Irvine, CA, with a focus on the many driving modes that set the 918 Spyder apart from anything else in the storied automaker's history. U.S. tariff threat hits European automakers' stocks

Thu, May 24 2018

FRANKFURT, Germany — A U.S. warning that it may introduce tariffs on foreign auto imports hit shares in German carmakers BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen on Thursday, which together have a more than 90 percent share of North America's premium car market. Washington said on Wednesday it had launched an investigation into whether car and truck imports are a national security issue due to signs they had damaged the U.S. auto industry. That could lead to new U.S. tariffs — up to 25 percent — similar to those imposed on imported steel and aluminum in March. BMW and Daimler shares fell as much as 3.1 percent in early Thursday trading, while Volkswagen's dropped as much as 2.5 percent. "(U.S. President) Donald Trump is obviously not thinking about how to prevent a trade war. Import duties on cars would be a nightmare for the German auto industry and would lead to a massive sales impact," said Thomas Altmann at Frankfurt-based asset manager QC Partners. BMW on Thursday condemned the move to consider tariffs. "The BMW Group is committed to free trade worldwide. Barrier-free access to markets is therefore a key factor not only for our business model, but also for growth welfare and employment throughout the global economy," it said. Daimler, which makes Mercedes-Benz cars, and Volkswagen, which makes upmarket Audis and Porsches, were not immediately available for comment. German carmakers produced 804,000 cars at local factories in the United States and exported 657,000 German-made cars into North America last year, according to German auto industry association VDA. China took pains on Thursday to welcome German firms and investments, with Premier Li Keqiang talking up relations after a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. BMW and Mercedes have expanded production capacity in the United States, but BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Daimler have also invested billions to build new factories in Mexico in the hope of selling locally produced cars into the United States. German carmakers hiked vehicle production in Mexico by 46 percent to 620,000 cars last year, while production levels inside the United States fell by 6 percent to 804,000 cars because of a shift to Mexico, according to the VDA. BMW has its biggest factory worldwide in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and is the largest vehicle exporter among all the carmakers in the United States measured by value of goods exported. More than 70 percent of BMW's U.S.-made cars are exported.

The Volkswagen Group switches official language to English

Wed, Dec 14 2016

The Volkswagen Group can't be fairly thought of as entirely German anymore, so the news that the company is switching its official language to English to help attract managers and executives is a rational, if surprising, decision. While many VW Group companies are still staidly German in character and culture, consider the other companies that it controls: Bentley (British), Bugatti (French), Ducati and Lamborghini (Italian), Skoda (Czech), Scania trucks (Swedish), and SEAT (Spanish). Not to mention the large Volkswagen Group of America operation, which constructs cars in Chattanooga, TN. Volkswagen's explicit motivation is to improve management recruitment – making sure the company isn't losing out on candidates for important positions because they can't speak German – and that's inherently sensible in a globalized economy. Particularly considering, like it or lump it, that English is the lingua franca of said global economy. It also should make it inherently easier to communicate between its world-wide subsidiaries and coordinate operations. It's hard to say for sure if this will have any impact on the consumer, although it's easy to see the benefits if, say, VW Group hires some American product planners or engineers and they push for features and designs that more closely suit American needs. After all, the US is a hugely important market for any manufacturer, and so the switch to English almost certainly has something to do with the outsized influence of the US in the global economy. And there doesn't seem to be a downside from a purely rational perspective, although it could mean that the Group's corporate culture becomes less German. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your perspective.
