1986 Porsche 944 Rothmans Challenge - Factory Cup Model on 2040-cars
Kirkland, Washington, United States
1986 Porsche 944
Rothmans Challenge Factory Cup Model ·
This is
1 of 31 factory Cup models specifically built for the 1986 Rothmans Challenge
– the first year of the Cup series
(first with 944s in the 80s then with 911s in the 90s) ·
The
Rothmans Challenge’s competitors include top Canadian drivers such as Kees
Nierop, Scott Goodyear, Ludwig Heimrath, Paul Tracy ·
Major
sponsors were Rothmans, Shell, Pirelli, Sunice ·
I
legally shipped it from Canada in 2009 as a body with engine, tranny partially
installed. The suspension was also
partially done as a roller. The car came
with spares and other mechanical bits ·
Restoration/build
was finished in 2010 by Fordahl Motorsports.
I have a three ring binder showing receipts and photos during the build o
The
headers are the rare Cup only spec that were used for the Rothmans series o
The
door panels are also original o
The
roll cage is the original with modified side impact protection for safety purposes o
In
other words, we took the effort to keep the car as original (Rothmans Challenge
Series) as possible ·
I have
the certificate of authenticity from Porsche (showing that it's a Cup model) as
well as VIN and DOT/EPA documentation from Porsche North America. I was
able to legally register this car for the street. It even passed smog in
WA. This is one of most recent street-registered historic race cars - something
typically reserved for pre-68 cars ·
Most
importantly, I have the CASC logbook and number plate tying its history in the
Canadian Rothmans Challenge with Matthewson (1986) and Walter Surma (1987).
It also raced in a few Firehawk Endurance races in 1988. There are
a few Rothmans cars out there, but without logbooks to verify its history.
I also have period photos during 86 Rothmans series ·
Since
restoration, it has been only raced one weekend per year including Portland
Rose Cup, SCCA vintage/ITS and Rennsport Reunion IV ·
Speaking
of RR IV, this is the only 944 historic race car accepted at the most recent
Rennsport Reunion in Laguna Seca. Great event to experience with all the
historic cars ·
A newly
rebuilt ITS-spec engine has recently been installed and is going through its
break-in period. No race or track miles
on the new engine. Engine was built by
Fordahl Motorsports. ·
The tranny
was newly built just prior to Rennsport Reunion IV. Spare tranny is also
rebuilt ·
Spare
parts: various wheels (including 7 Simmons wheels which is proper period spec
for the series, set of 7x16” Fuchs, set of 15” cookie cutter magnesium wheels
with one race-old Hoosier R6s), original transmission (freshly rebuilt) and
engine block, door, and various misc. pieces ·
The
wheels on the car as ran at RR are Simmons V5 wheels with 16” Hoosier R6s ·
The car
is currently in the Seattle area ·
Although
I have and still immensely enjoy this car after owning it for close to 6 years;
I recently purchased another race car in my bucket list. Hence, I’m selling the Rothmans. |

Can a Corvette really be compared to a 911 with options costing more than the Chevy?
Wed, 29 Jan 2014In this latest video from Drive, Chris Harris asks straight away, "Can you still compare a base Corvette to a Porsche Carerra?" That's an particularly interesting question in this film, as the 911 in question is a 400-horsepower Carrera S model that's been fitted with $60,000 in options. Base price of a Corvette Stingray? $51,995. Harris' tester features an automatic and some other goodies that push it right up to that $60,000 range. So yes, the options on the Porsche cost as much as this entire 460-hp Chevrolet.
Harris stresses that this isn't a full review, but he does exercise both cars in a more composed manner before reverting to his traditionally exuberant driving style. The impressions are, as always, spot on, with Harris favoring the pointy nature and V8 power of the Stingray, while enjoying the gearbox (Porsche's exceptional PDK transmission) and just about everything else on the 911.
Take a look below for the latest video from Drive, and let us know if you agree with Mr. Harris' views on these two sports cars.
Porsche recalling 4,400 911, Boxster and Cayman models over hood latches
Mon, 03 Nov 2014Porsche has issued a "precautionary" and voluntary safety recall affecting some 4,400 sports cars across the globe. Here in the United States, the recall includes 1,382 911, Boxster convertibles and Cayman coupes, all of which are from model years 2014 and 2015.
Porsche will be replacing the lock bracket for the front cargo area (the frunk) after internal testing revealed that, while the vehicles meet "strength requirements," specific parts might not meet the company's quality standards throughout the vehicle's life. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries.
Owners of the affected cars will be notified within 60 days and will need to report to a nearby dealer for a free repair, which should take about 30 minutes.
Ward's Automotive Ten Best Engines of 2014 dominated by diesels, turbos
Thu, 12 Dec 2013With the Car and Driver Ten Best decided, the North American Car and Truck of the Year finalists announced and Cadillac, Ram and Subaru chalking up wins with Motor Trend, it's fair to say that the automotive awards season is in full swing. The next set of trophies to be handed out will be from Ward's Automotive, which has announced the winners of its 2014 10 Best Engines.
The latest contest was marked by the widespread emergence of diesel power and the continued success of turbocharged engines. There was even an electric motor on this year's list. In fact, only three of the ten winners were naturally aspirated and only two winners returned from last year.
"We weren't looking to throw the bums out, as they might say about an election. We were just really impressed with the flood of new powertrains," said Ward's Automotive Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter. Those new powertrains include the 83-kilowatt electric motor from the Fiat 500e, the 1.0-liter, EcoBoost three-cylinder from the Ford Fiesta and the 2.0-liter turbodiesel from the Chevrolet Cruze.
