Porsche’s initial work with turbocharging their racing cars during the late 1960s led to development of a turbocharged street version of the 911. While initially required to comply with FIA homologation requirements, development continued when the rules changed nevertheless. The new Porsche was repositioned as a fully equipped model to lead the 911 series, and to compete directly with the costlier and more exotic vehicles from Ferrari and Lamborghini.
Ernst Fuhrmann led development, adapting the technology developed for the 917/30 
Can-Am car to the 3.0-liter-flat-six from the Carrera RS 3.0. Suspension refinements, larger brakes and a strengthened four-speed manual gearbox rounded out the package. A functional "whale-tail" rear spoiler increased cooling airflow and provided rear downforce. Wider rear wheels with upgraded tires resided within flared wheel wells, considerably increasing grip and stability at speed. 
Simply known as the "Turbo", the new vehicle was released in the spring of 1975, with export to the U.S. commencing in 1976. In 1978, power output reached 300 hp (DIN), with a displacement increase to 3.3 liters and the addition of an air-to-air intercooler. Porsche’s continuous development included slight revisions to the rear spoiler to accommodate the intercooler. Braking was significantly upgraded with units similar in basic design to those of the mighty 917. Porsche’s careful development also ensured that the 930 was a sound basis for its racing vehicles, and led to the highly successful 934 and 935 racing cars, which utterly dominated the most world’s most prestigious endurance races from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s. The 930 proved fast but demanding; however, skilled drivers quickly learned how to drive it properly, and to drive the car well beyond the limits of most other sports cars. 
Retaining its eye-arresting original paint finish, clearly well maintained, and having travelled only an approximate 23,000 original miles from new, this outstanding 1987 Porsche 930 Turbo Coupe also retains its legendary original 3.3-liter engine. As a late-production example, it provides easier driving with reduced turbo lag and suspension refinements that tamed – only slightly – the car’s demands. Clean, untouched, and impressive throughout, it is Porsche’s definitive supercar of the era and perennially desirable to true Porsche enthusiasts everywhere. 2015 Porsche Boxster GTS [w/video]

You know the sound: the startling pop-brraaap-pop-pop shotgun fire of unspent flammables coursing through exhaust pipes that usually signals a raw, naughty powerplant beneath the hood.
But when you're nestled in the Porsche Boxster GTS' snug seats, it's not a crackling small block V8 or a high-strung Italian flat crank making the devilish racket, but rather the new king of the Boxster/Cayman lineup, a 3.4-liter flat-six that produces 330 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
Within the emotional vacuum of a spec sheet, the Boxster GTS' pumped-up grunt seems pretty mild, with a gain of only 15 hp and 7 lb-ft, respectively. But the reworked acoustical experience goes a long way towards suggesting the GTS has a trace of racing blood in its veins, and might even be missing its catalytic converters. In addition to the sonorous, centrally positioned tailpipes, the cabin also fills with lovely mechanical strains thanks to the "Sound Symposer" acoustical amplifier that's trickled down into the Boxster/Cayman lineup from the 911 for the first time. Boxster S, we hardly knew ya.

Porsche Classic puts modern navigation in older cars [w/video]

People drive classic vehicles for many, many reasons. Maybe it's because they're cool, or they bring back memories, or perhaps they just want to take a trip back in time, before the days of adaptive cruise control, massaging seats and satellite navigation. You know, back to when driving was about, well, driving. Someone did not mention this reasoning to Porsche, because the German company has decided to offer the tiniest, most ridiculous in-dash navigation system we've ever laid eyes on, through its Porsche Classic line. Because, you know, people don't own smartphones nowadays. In fact, most smartphones are significantly bigger than Porsche's new nav setup. The touchscreen is just 3.5 inches in size, although its graphical layout is clean and in line with the company's more modern offerings. It also integrates a new entertainment system, which adds Bluetooth connectivity and a 4x45 watt amp. The system is being offered for a wide array of vintage Porsches, ranging from the most modern, air-cooled 993s, all the way back to the earliest 911. Four-cylinder and V8 models, as well as front and mid-engine cars, can be fitted with the nav system, too. Porsche Classic has priced the new system at the frankly absurd price of 1,184 euros ($1,344 at today's rates), though we're sure a large number will indeed be sold and installed. Volkswagen reportedly to name Matthias Muller CEO

Porsche chief executive officer Matthias Muller is expected to be named CEO of Volkswagen AG, the Wall Street Journal and other sources reported Thursday morning. Muller, 62, has led Porsche since Oct. 1, 2010, and jumpstarted the sports-car brand's expansion around the world. He replaces Martin Winkerkorn, who stepped down Wednesday amid the company's worsening diesel scandal. At least three more executives are also expected to be fired, including Volkswagen's US chief and the heads of Audi and Porsche research and development. Both brands are divisions of VW. A US spokesman wouldn't confirm the reports. An official announcement is expected at VW's board meeting on Friday. Muller's ascension caps a stunning week of turmoil for Volkswagen, which manipulated software to make its diesel-powered vehicles appear cleaner during testing that they are in real-world driving. The charges were revealed last week by the EPA, which cited the work of researchers at West Virginia University. About 482,000 vehicles are affected in the United States, which will be subject to recall, and VW estimates about 11 million of its vehicles around the world have the rigged software. The well-regarded Muller was viewed as a front-runner for the job even before Winterkorn stepped down. Before helming Porsche, he oversaw all vehicle projects globally for VW from 2007-2010. Previously, he was in charge of the Audi and Lamborghini product lines, and earlier in his career was responsible for the Audi A3 program in the 1990s. He joined Audi in 1977. He's trained as a toolmaker and studied information technology in Munich. His last name is sometimes spelled Mueller in English. Muller faces immediate challenges as he takes over VW's sprawling 78-year-old industrial empire, including recalls and regulatory actions around the world. In the US alone, the company faces a fine of up to $18 billion. VW, an industrial symbol of Germany, is also far larger than any unit Muller has run in his career. While Porsche sold 189,849 vehicles in 2014 globally, it's one of many VW brands.
