This is a numbers matching, investment grade vehicle that you can still really enjoy driving.

History

This is originally a German market car delivered to Frankfurt, Germany according to the Kardex. There are no records from this time.

The 930 was imported in the early 1980s by Eibell Performance and sold to a Tampa, FL doctor who owned it until 2000. It was then purchased by the previous owner and kept in Tampa until I bought it two years ago. The car now has 62,000 kilometers on it.

I've always been obsessed with the rare and interesting color schemes on 911s, such as the 1966 911 in Slate Gray with red interior I sold earlier this year. The color scheme is the best one for an early 930 in my opinion, I have enjoyed driving this car the past two years. However, a 1976 930 is next to impossible to smog in California, and I got a ticket recently for my out-of-state Florida tags. I have decided to try a Ferrari for a change and purchased one recently. It now has a California title and is on a “non-op” registration. Because the seller is held responsible for passing smog, the car will not be sold to anyone planning to register the car in California.

Interior
  • Original full leather interior with Tartan Dress plaid cloth inserts as noted on the Kardex.
  • It is in great shape for it's age, and the only wear areas are a small area on the driver’s seat cloth and a crack in the rear parcel shelf speaker hole area (see pics).
  • The interior condition confirms the low mileage of the car.
  • Original extra-thick pile carpet with "Turbo" script on the drivers side rear seat back. In good condition for its age, but faded some from its original color.
  • The 930 had floor mats when I purchased it, and you can see the original color better in the areas the mats covered.
  • Original Blaupunkt Bamberg cassette deck with all accessories
  • Recording microphone
  • Amplifier and four original speakers
  • Additional control module mounted under ashtray
  • Owners manual in German
  • Power windows work great
  • Blower fan and heat controls function as they should.
  • All gauges are functional and have correct date stamps except the tachometer, which has a 1.5 bar boost gauge and is stamped 10/76.
  • This was a typical upgrade for '76 930 owners who wanted the boost gauge introduced on the '77 models.
  • Headliner is in excellent condition
  • The previous owner had the dash and steering wheel recovered in genuine leather due to typical sun damage. While they did a nice job appropriate to a driver-level car, the recovering was not done to factory standards of leather and stitching.

Body

This is why I purchased this particular 930: Zero rust and zero accident damage. So many of these early turbo "Widowmakers" were damaged severely and endured a rough life. The underbody, rocker panels, and fender wells still have all of the original undercoating, and the virgin condition confirms the low mileage of the car.

Ten years ago the previous owner had it completely repainted due to the original metallic paint failng, which is typical for these 1970s metallic cars.
  • Repainted in the original Copper Brown Metallic.
  • Paint gauge shows two layers of paint (original plus respray), no filler on any part of the body.
  • There is some orange peel in a few spots if you look closely, but overall the paint is in excellent condition and shines beautifully. There are no rock chips due to the car not being driven much after the repaint.
  • Every window and body seal and rubber part was replaced with new, including all bumper pads, bellows, seals, and front spoiler. Rear spoiler rubber is the only one not replaced because it is NLA.
Documentation
  • The original German owners manual and an English version are included.
  • Porsche Certificate of Authenticity
  • Kardex report from Porsche Classic confirming tartan dress inserts.
  • Two 1976 color full line brochures in English featuring a non-sunroof copper brown 911 with tartan interior like this one!
  • One rare 1975 brochure from the introduction of the upcoming 930 to the US market.
  • I have a folder full of service and repair records from the doctor who owned the car from the early 80s until 2000.
  • Photo of the car from the 1990s when the doctor owned it. You can see its completely stock appearance. The previous owner took the photo of it around Tampa because he admired the car, and a few years later saw it for sale and bought it!
  • The previous owner unfortunately lost most of his receipts during his ownership from 2000 due to a divorce. However, he and the mechanic who serviced the car and built the engine are available by phone and can verify what is listed below.
  • All records of parts and labor done during my ownership.

Mechanical

The car starts, runs, and drives like a proper 3.0 930 should. Clutch takeup is excellent, shifting is smooth and crisp with no hesitation or grinding in any gear.

Car was completely stock when the previous owner bought it in 2000. He had the following work done to the car in the past 10 years:
  • Numbers matching engine was rebuilt by Porsche Master Technician Carl Register (formerly of All Pro Porsche, now Porsche of Ocala).
  • Rebuilt to completely original 3.0 stock specification.
  • Original pistons and cylinders were in excellent condition, so they were re-used with new rings.
  • All new engine hardware, clamps and brackets. Engine looks brand new!
  • Upgraded to Carrera oil-fed tensioners
  • New stock oil cooler mounted in front fender
  • The original 4 speed transmission was in excellent condition, so Carl just resealed it. It shifts like new with no grinding.
  • The troublesome original turbo and restrictive exhaust system was replaced with:
  • New K27 turbo
  • New GHL stainless exhaust system including heat exchangers for cabin heat.
  • New GHL muffler. It has two exhausts, but I am told the right side can be removed and capped to get the original single exhaust look without much impact on performance. I have the original single-exhaust under-bumper valance.
  • New Tial wastegate
  • New Bilstein B6 Sports shock absorbers (green) all around
  • The original date-correct 15x7 and 15x8 Fuchs are in good condition with brand new Pirelli tires

I had the following work performed since I purchased the car, and I kept receipts for the parts and service:
  • Completely renewed front and rear suspension
  • New original ball joints, tie rods, and all suspension bushings
  • New original sway bar links and bushings
  • Drivers side window regulator rebuilt
  • Completely renewed brake system
  • All 4 calipers rebuilt
  • New brake rotors and pads
  • New flexible brake lines
  • New master cylinder
  • Ride height set to Euro specification, then four wheels aligned and corner balanced.

Extra Parts Included (not installed on vehicle)

The previous owner was planning to upgrade to a rotary compressor and bigger condensers, which he never got around to doing. He also didn’t like the looks of the rear window wiper, so he removed the mechanism and filled the holes when the car was repainted.
  • Complete original A/C ducts, under-dash vents, and components except lines, compressor and condensers.
  • Compressor mouting brackets are all included and appear new.
  • Front condenser guard and grid cover is included but they need straightening and painting.
  • Metal brackets for mounting the rear condender in the tail is included.
  • Original rear window wiper motor, mount, mechanism, and arm are included.
  • Original German market under-bumper fog lamp with mounting bracket.
  • Original single exhaust outlet under-bumper valence.
  • Rare AutoArt 1:18 model of a 1976 930 Copper Brown Metallic, new in box similar to this one: http://hobbyfm.com.ua/ìàãàçèí/ìàñøòàáíûå/autoart_77973.html

VW Group recalls 27k Touaregs, Audis and Porsches for fuel leak

Tue, Jan 27 2015

The Volkswagen Group is one of the most expansive in the entire industry, and shares parts across more product lines than we could wrap our heads around. So when the German megalith finds a fault in one of its components, it has the capacity to spread like wildfire. The latest set of recall notices from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration covers vehicles from the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche divisions. The problem revolves around the fuel injection system, which could potentially leak and cause a fire. The recall affects – deep breath now – the 2012 VW Touareg Hybrid, the 2011-12 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid and Panamera S Hybrid, 2011-12 Audi S4, S5 and Q7 and the 2012-13 Audi A7. All told, that amounts to 27,376 units, the owners of which can expect to hear from the manufacturer to have the fuel rails replaced, along with their corresponding seals (having nothing to do with marine mammals writing letters). RECALL Subject : Fuel Injection System Fuel Leak Report Receipt Date: JAN 20, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V019000 Component(s): FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE Potential Number of Units Affected: 26,008 Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. SUMMARY: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Audi S4, S5, Q7, 2012 Audi A6, Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid, and 2012-2013 Audi A7 vehicles. In the affected vehicles the fuel injection system may experience a fuel leak. CONSEQUENCE: A fuel leak in the injection system in the presence of an ignition source, increases the risk of a fire. REMEDY: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rails and corresponding seals, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 10, 2015. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-822-2834 or Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are 24AP for Audi customers and 24BK for Volkswagen customers. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. ### RECALL Subject : Fuel Injection System may Leak Report Receipt Date: JAN 20, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V016000 Component(s): ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING Potential Number of Units Affected: 1,368 Manufacturer: Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche expects to hit 200k sales target 3 years early

Fri, Jan 9 2015

When Porsche launched the Cayenne, enthusiasts and purists – in between fits of rage – rationalized the SUVs existence by imagining that the money it brought in would guarantee the company's continued ability to produce the many beloved versions of its 911. The same was said when the Panamera arrived, and again when the Macan was unveiled. What probably wasn't imagined when these three more mainstream vehicles joined the Porsche catalog, was how dramatic an impact they'd have on the company's sales figures. The company expects 2015 to be a banner year, as it aims to hit a 200,000-unit sales goal three years ahead of schedule. Porsche sold nearly 190,000 units in 2014, a gain of 17 percent over 2013, while its year-over-year sales for December were up 39 percent. Considering Porsche made these gains before the full impact of the new Macan could be felt, it's no wonder the company is so keen on 2015. Porsche has already moved 45,000 Macans, which would be impressive on its own, were it not for the way the CUV is elevating the brand. According to a report from Reuters, two-thirds of the company's Macan deliveries have been to first-time Porsche customers. Considering these two facts, it will be extremely interesting to see the impact Porsche's newest model has on its sales over a full calendar year.

Porsche 918 Spyder gets tiny recall for rear control arms

Tue, 09 Sep 2014

As the recent US recall of a single Koenigsegg Agera shows, even low-production supercars aren't immune from safety campaigns. Now, there's another example that even the fastest cars can have their faults. The Porsche 918 Spyder is a pretty fantastic vehicle for its ability to mix hybrid fuel economy and incredible amounts of power, but Porsche has a problem on a few units of its halo model.
According to the recall document from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Porsche needs to inspect and possibly repair five 918s in the US because the rear axle control arms may break, which could cause a loss of control while driving. In the full defect notice, Porsche says that it first noticed the problem on June 26 when the parts failed during "heavy duty durability testing (extreme race conditions)" at the Nardo test track in Italy. It transported the components back to the company's lab for inspection, and on July 18 it issued a stop-sale to inspect the suspension parts on the supercar. The automaker also contacted owners by phone to warn them not to use the car on track, until repaired.
The affected 918s will be inspected, and if the cars have the bad parts, the control arms are will be replaced. Obviously, this will be done at no cost to owners. According to a Porsche spokesperson speaking to Autoblog, in addition to the five US cars potentially affected, there were 45 worldwide. All of the cars have now been checked. Scroll down to read the report from the regulator or download the full defect notice as a PDF, here.
