Back in the early 1970s, the Porsche management team decided it was time to build an ?berPorsche, one that would allow long distance traveling at speeds beyond 150mph, safely, without inducing driver fatigue. The car would have to be able to meet any and all government regulations that might be conceived in the foreseeable future. Its code name: 928. Its MSRP when introduced in Geneva back in 1977: $26,500 in base trim, roughly the same price as several contemporary Kia’s.
Always evolving throughout its 17-year production, the 928 began with a 4.5-liter V8 engine delivering 230hp. By 1991, the "S4" reached the pinnacle of the series with a 5.0-liter engine that produces an astounding 316 hp. Along with countless performance, suspension, safety and styling updates, the S4 has a cleaner, sleeker look that is much closer to being a 21st century car than the previous models. The factory proudly called the S4 "the fastest street legal production car sold in the US," a comfortable road rocket, capable of seating 4 while giving contemporary Ferraris, Maseratis, and Lamborghinis a run for their money.
More refined, comfortable, and luxurious than any prior Porsche, the 928 shares one very important trait with the legendary 911: timeless looks. Even 37 years after its introduction, the Tony Lapine-penned 928 design has lost nothing of its breathtaking appeal; like a spaceship from another planet, it is a superb example of the prevailing design virtues of the Seventies.
Viewed from the rear, the 928 still looks futuristic, almost 38 years after its debut. If you're in lust with its shape and desire to drive the Teutonic supercar today, be forewarned though: the 928 is a very complex automobile, and only the best-maintained low-mileage example should be pursued, or the dream of 928 ownership could easily turn into a nightmare.
On May 2, 1991, VIN *WP0AA2923MS810394*, left the factory gates in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, West Germany.
The original window sticker (price $80,634) and stamped Warrantee Voucher confirm the car sold new on March 19, 1992 at Dave Strong’s Porsche in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Making its journey west, the car was loved and cherished by a premium wine maker in Napa.
The current owner is a mature, prominent businessman who keeps the car covered and sheltered in his “man cave” among his private collection of museum quality Porsches in Monterey, CA.
The Porsche comes with all its original books and manuals, as well as all keys, including the valet keys. Ideally, a keeper 928's Owner’s Books has to look like this!
Needless to say, the car's maintenance and mileage history is fully documented. Lots of dealer service stamps entered in the maintenance book and a stack of service records vouch for an immaculate past. Studying the records confirms that the car was pampered bordering on obsession, with absolutely no regard to cost.
There are absolutely no "deferred maintenance" worries. Hence, a unique opportunity arises to obtain a coveted 928 S4, one that has always enjoyed a most beneficial climate and is pampered beyond belief by a mature owner with big pockets and the willingness to pay up for the best service and upgrades money can buy.
Let's check out this dream find now, inside and out!
The exterior, sporting its original black finish looks simply stunning.
All trim and glass remains in near-perfect condition as well.
This S4 has never suffered any damage. There are no door dings, only a few minor blems and rock chips to report.
Hood, hatch and door gaps are in perfect alignment; confirming the 928’s pampered existence for the past 23 years.
Equipped with lightweight aluminum doors and hoods, this Porsche's body is perfectly rust and accident free.
Note the factory-installed electric sunroof; code 650, one of the most desirable amenities available.
Equipped with a wind deflector, it works flawlessly.
Retractable headlights flip-up and down in perfect unison.
The front bumper and spoiler have a few scratches and rock chips
This 928 S4 still wears its original factory-installed chromed alloy wheels (some very minor pitting, see detailed photos).
There is a set of near-new YOKOHAMA ES100 ultra- high-performance radials of the size 225/50ZR16.
While we’re down on one knee, let’s have a look underneath.
More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage.
This original chassis presents itself free of any kind of damage or corrosion.
No flaking, no undercoating, just the all-original finishes.
Details, details. Notice that the Porsche 928 features a transaxle design to achieve perfect weight balance, the engine being up front and the transmission mounted to the rear axle housing.
Most importantly, with the exception of a few scrapes and scratches below, there is absolutely NO evidence of corrosion, collision damage or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights.
Let's look inside now!
Leather, leather everywhere.
Even dash surface and headliner are crafted from the finest aromatic hides. Highly unusual, the dash top is perfectly free of the usual leather shrinkage or warping.
This 928 S4 comes equipped with all the features you would expect of a true luxury automobile.
Among them, a height-adjustable instrument pod and steering wheel, ensuring good visibility for drivers of all sizes, and an automatic climate control system that also cools the glove compartment.
All digital and analog gauges and switches work perfectly and the 37,161 miles shown on the digital odometer are original!
Combining Porsche performance with Mercedes comfort, the seats are extremely comfortable and feature about every power adjustment a pilot could dream of.
Properly nourished, the seats' light gray hides are still soft and supple; there are no rips or tears, no wear marks of any kind.
The 928 S4 being a true GT car, the rear compartment is actually spacious enough for adult use. Interestingly, rear passengers even have their own sun visors!
Ever tried to stow all your vacation luggage, perhaps including a couple of golf bags, inside a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or even Porsche 911?
The 928's luggage compartment is cavernous, and its capacity can be increased even more by folding the rear seatbacks forward.
From the soft cotton car cover and cargo net to the unused spare tire and jack below: almost every factory goodie is still present, large or small. It's the proverbial fussy collector's dream!
How about a quick peek under the hood?
Residing in a toothbrush-clean engine bay is this amazing engineering masterpiece, entirely hewn from Reynolds 390 silicon-and-aluminum alloy.
Similar to the 911 engine, a BOSCH Jetronic injection takes care of fuel distribution.
The bullet-proof power plant is mated to Borg Warner’s finest 4-speed automatic transmission, nestled inside a lightweight Porsche case, which itself is mated to the famous Weissach rear transaxle for a near-perfect 51/49% weight distribution.
With an extensive, documented service history and a major service/system check recently completed, you can safely surmise that this particular engine is healthy as an ox in its prime. Clean as a whistle, there are no leaks, no untoward noises, no bad behaviors. It's a fitting description to call it like new.
Drivability:
From the addictive, burbling sound of the V8 to the feeling of full control at any time, driving the 928 S4 is a visceral pleasure. The car virtually clings to the road during fast cornering; the big, servo-assisted disc brakes can deliver almost 1g of deceleration force.
It's so much fun to drive a sports car equipped with a big V8 engine and automatic transmission. There are no rattles or shimmies, acceleration is impressive, and everywhere you arrive, interested passersby stop to admire this rare Porsche, marveling at the fact that a 23 year-old car can be this pristine in every way.
A true supercar, it could run with the best of Ferrari and Lamborghini in its day, entirely unfussy and without the anxiety its Italian counterparts instill in most pilots. This immaculately cared-for, low mileage, rust free, fully documented example is in museum condition and would be impossible to duplicate.
Manufactured for almost seventeen years, Porsche's superb 928 long ago was elevated to the status of a truly iconic milestone car. Here's a unique opportunity to obtain one of the very best-preserved examples you'll ever encounter.

2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed statue unveiled
Thu, 11 Jul 2013Each year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a single marque is celebrated with a large and ornate "Central Feature" sculpture, with recent automakers including Audi in 2009, Alfa Romeo in 2010, Jaguar in 2011 and Lotus last year. This year, Porsche gets the honor, and it is using the opportunity to commemorate 50 years of the 911.
The sculpture features three generations of the 911 towering over the Goodwood House. The most recent 991 911 has the lowest position, with an original 1963 car second highest and a 1973 2.7 RS at the top of the pile. Be sure to check out the sculpture for yourself in the gallery of images above.
Porsche planning new 911 Speedster as 550 tribute
Tue, 12 Nov 2013Some look at the emergence of a new Porsche 911 and see a car. But to Porsche engineers, it might as well be a reset button. Because every time a new 911 comes out, it sets off a tidal wave of new variants to follow, including convertibles, turbos, targas, GT3s... the works.
The next down the pipeline, though, could be one of the most desirable. That, according to German publication Auto Bild, will be a new 911 Speedster. When it arrives early in 2015, the special roadster will reportedly be limited to just 550 examples in tribute to the original 550 Spyder.
It'll reportedly have hidden door handles, a chopped-down windshield and a fabric top to be used only in case of emergency, manually disappearing below a carbon-fiber cowling. All of which makes it sounds as much like a bigger version of the Boxster Spyder as a successor to the last 911 Speedster (pictured above), and that's no bad thing at all.
Porsche gives GT3 owners extra year of warranty, new engines in production April 22
Sat, 12 Apr 2014While the auto industry reels from massive recall after massive recall, Porsche has quietly been working on a fix for an issue that's forced owners of the new 911 GT3 to park their track-ready rockets for fear of an engine fire. Thanks to a leaked letter from Porsche to a GT3 owner (which has been certified as real), we now have an idea of just where the German brand is at with the fix.
On April 22, Porsche will begin production of a new batch of GT3 engines for the 785 affected models across the globe. As you'll recall, the original issue rested with a screw joint that could loosen the connecting rod. The new engines have an "optimized piston rod screw connection," that should keep the connecting rod in place. Once technical validations are completed, production will kick off and new powerplants will be shipped around the globe for owners of the troubled cars.
Porsche will hand out a certificate to owners of affected cars once repairs have been completed, as a means of documenting the work. To make up for the trouble, Porsche will be giving owners an extra year on their new-vehicle warranty, while the 911 GT3 concierge will be reaching out to compensate them for having to park their car for so long.
