Here is an opportunity for you to own this beautiful 1973 Porsche 914. This car has been returned to a condition close to its original factory appearance, and the result of several months of hard work plus several thousand dollars in new parts and materials. As a winning bidder you will benefit from my 'labor of love' by owning this classic Porsche in a condition that's hard to find anywhere else.

In addition to this eBay description you can find a lot more information and detailed photos of the car at my web site 914guy.com

An Arizona car since 2005, this 914 was completely disassembled and placed on a rotisserie for access to repair rust and other issues on the bottom of the vehicle. This is the only correct way to perform a serious restoration. Unlike some sellers I will not claim that this car is '100% rust free' as I believe that truthfully cannot be said of any Porsche 914, with possible exception for cars meticulously stored since new. But I think this car will be as close to a rust-free example that can be found, with all rusted areas removed and replaced with new steel. Internal body cavities not easily accessible without cutting were inspected, and either media blasted and primered ,or chemically treated to stabilize surface rust (rust conversion). Where new steel parts could not be fabricated, only Restoration Design reproduction parts were used. Examples are the front trunk floor and battery tray support. I hope that the photos will convince you of the care taken to eliminate rust as a future concern, with the assumption that the car will have good care and not typical years of neglect.

All old finishes were stripped to bare metal (all exterior panels) or to original factory etch primer. High-quality epoxy and direct-to-metal urethane primers and primer surfacers were used under the top coats. All old body fillers were removed with the metal straightened to near original shape. A minimum of Evercoat metal-filled filler was used over welds and for surface leveling, having excellent corrosion resistance and moisture resistance. The car was painted to its factory L80E Light Ivory color code in a basecoat/clearcoat system. This paint will hold its appearance for many, many years with proper care.

Every component installed on the car was either rebuilt, refurbished or replaced with new parts. Original installed factory parts, if still in good condition and having remaining service life, were retained. The wiring harness was fully inspected and repaired before going back into the car. Damaged or missing wires were replaced with identical color-code wires from a donor harness. Proper operation of all lighting and all other electrical functions was checked. Headlight assemblies, horns, wiper motor, fresh air blower and controls, fuel gauge and all other parts were cleaned, lubed, and otherwise fully checked out before installation. Suspension was refurbished with new sway bar bushings. Brakes have new rotors, pads, rebuilt calipers, brake hoses and master cylinder. Engine has new pistons and cylinders, rebuilt heads, new seals and gaskets, rebuilt Weber carburetors, new rotary fuel pump, new braided fuel hoses and filters, rebuilt distributor, alternator and starter motor. New transaxle seals, shifter and clutch bushings, and new cables for clutch, accelerator and speedometer. New tires including spare are 165/80-15 mounted on the factory alloy 4-bolt Fuchs.

The car comes with Rennenmetal tiedown eyes front and rear to make trailer tie-down much easier. These can be removed if desired.

Interior has new carpet and original style vinyl seat covers and on door panels. Door and window mechanisms were rebuilt, with the door shells fully painted inside to inhibit rust. Door panels are waterproofed with moisture barriers. Old dirty sound dampening material removed from floors and firewall with new foil-backed Fatmat material installed, including inside doors. All seat mechanisms refurbished and painted, pedal cluster rebuilt, gauges with gauge lighting restored. All new rubber seals throughout the car, from 914Rubber. The car comes with a beautiful condition original Porsche leather-wrapped steering wheel. The targa top has new Perlon carpet and 914Rubber seals. Radio is an 80s vintage AM/FM with non-working cassette but with a mini-stereo jack for your MP3 player. New 4"x 6" speakers in the factory locations.  New professionally installed windshield with urethane sealant, and new rear-view mirror.

Here are some items that you may or may not have an issue with, but you should be aware of. As I stated above this car is close to original, with the goal to return the car to a condition that's nearly-new in appearance and operation. That does not mean it is exactly original which is impossible for the condition I found it in, and it would require excessive cost that I could never come close to recovering.

  • This 914 had dealer installed air-conditioning that was incomplete with a missing compressor. The dealer installations were typically poor quality as was the case with this car. All A/C components were removed and all holes and various cut-outs welded up to restore factory body integrity and eliminate potential water or rodent entry. The front trunk floor was replaced with the Restoration Design part with factory spare tire hold-down. For that reason it will not appear identical to original factory. The engine shelf that was cut out for the compressor was also repaired to look nearly factory original. If requested I will include the A/C parts that came with the car, but in my opinion it would be a shame to install these parts onto the car.
  • Many of the heater parts were missing and I decided not to locate and install all these parts. Heater tube and fan housing ports are blocked off.  In southern Arizona there's not much need for a heater, especially for a car meant to be driven on nice days with the top off. However, a new owner could restore the heater function to this car by installing the various hoses and flapper valves, etc. The car already has good stainless steel heat exchangers. If desired by the buyer I will include the heater blower, heater control lever and a few other parts that I have in the sale.
  • This 914 does not have its original engine or fuel injection. At some time in the past a previous owner had the engine replaced with a 1.8 liter 'EC' serial number engine and removed the fuel injection. The engine had 94 mm pistons/cylinders to bring it up to the approximate 2.0 liter displacement as the car was originally badged.  These were replaced with new pistons, rings and cylinders. It has a Scat C35 cam instead of the stock FI cam. Fuel is delivered via twin Weber IDF44s that are properly synchronized and adjusted. This is the strongest Type 4 Porsche 914 I have driven, and has very nice performance considering that I am used to driving a 914 V8 conversion. Due to the higher compression I recommend using only premium or higher-octane gasoline as I have not tested it running regular.
  • The dash pad top has a molded black ABS cover, carefully installed with a removable black suede dash mat. This provides a nice appearance without the high cost of NOS original or recovered dash pads.
If you are a 914 'purist' who expects a fully original car, then this listing is obviously not one you should consider. But if you want a 914 with beautiful paint and bodywork, a like new interior, fun to drive, with none of the rust, electrical and mechanical issues typically found with 914s ... then this could be the one for you.  I need a higher price to try to recover some of my expenses for parts, material and labor. I have $10,000 invested in this car and hundred of hours of time. Obviously you can buy a 914 for much less but they likely will need a lot of work. With this one all the hard work is done, and you are ready to enjoy it as-is or spend more money to customize it to your liking.

If you have any questions, please ask. I'm available by phone if necessary.  I'll be happy to provide more photos of the build process upon request, and will work with a shipper of your choice. Since this is a 40 year old used vehicle there is no warranty on parts, except I will provide warranty information for the tires.

Production Porsche 918 Spyder images leak out of Chinese patent office

Wed, 26 Dec 2012

A few images of what looks to be the production Porsche 918 Spyder are here to say hello, courtesy of a patent office in China. If these provide an accurate look at what the hybrid supercar will look like, there are a few differences between it and the latest examples of the pre-production prototypes our spy shooters have seen.
The jerry-rigged turn signals inside the headlight enclosures and on the front fenders on the prototype are replaced with more polished units inside the headlamps located underneath the main beams. Behind that, the door handles have been swapped from horizontal latches on the door to vertical openings located just behind the door shutline.
We've also seen a Martini-liveried version of the 918 Spyder that has extra carbon elements that don't appear on this car. It was at the Nürburgring with carbon lips on the front fenders and another carbon element that hung from the rear fenders and ran down to the rear diffuser. When we saw the car on our Deep Dive piece, the front lips were gone but that rear piece remained, and we can't tell from the brochure and options sheet that we've seen so far what it comes with. The wheels from the concept and the green brake calipers, minus the polycarbonate covers, should be the standard fitment while the ten-spoke magnesium wheels will be a 29,750-euro (about $39,000 US) option.

Season 9 of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee teases us with BMWs and Volvos

Thu, Dec 22 2016

Jerry Seinfeld's successful online show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is heading into its ninth season, returning January 5th. It should be no surprise that the list of actors and comedians is impressive, with Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, and more making appearances. Seinfeld has lined up an equally impressive list of cars for the new season. Porsche, BMW, and Volvo all have beautiful machines lined up to shuttle Seinfeld and his guest to different coffee shops. As always, it's a mix of light humor packed into a relatively short and, most importantly, free video. Catch up on the previous eight seasons now on Crackle. Porsche would have entered F1 if Audi had blocked its Le Mans program

Thu, 13 Mar 2014

Go back a few years and you may have heard rumors of Porsche heading into Formula One. That never came to pass - or at least, it hasn't yet - but that doesn't mean that it wasn't close to happening. That's how committed to returning to top-level motorsport competition Porsche has become recently.
Autosport reports that just as Porsche was merging fully into the Volkswagen Group, Zuffenhausen was weighing its options for a factory racing program. Le Mans was its favorite, which makes sense, as it remains far and away the most successful constructor in the history of the famous endurance race. But the strategists at Porsche were worried that its new corporate overlords at Volkswagen wouldn't support two LMP1 programs and would favor Audi, which has positively dominated the modern era of endurance racing, coming second only to Porsche in the number of Le Mans victories it has scored to date.
Porsche's Plan B was reportedly to head into Formula One, although it isn't clear if the German automaker was intent on starting its own team, buying an existing one or merely providing engines to other teams. Porsche fielded its own cars in F1 in the late 1950s and early 60s, and returned as an engine supplier with TAG to power McLaren in the 1980s, powering Niki Lauda and Alain Prost to the World Championship in 1984 and 1985.
