1973 Porsche 914 2.0l - Fuel Injected - Fully Restored - Uberhauled on 2040-cars
Norcross, Georgia, United States
When is a 40 year old car not a 40 year old car? When every functional and cosmetic aspect of it has been meticulously inspected, rebuilt or replaced with new, upgraded or excellent used components. This is the case with my beautiful 1973 Porsche 914 2.0L. Of course it did not start out this way. I purchased this car 4 years ago online from someone out West who shall we we say was a good deal less than honest about its condition. After overcoming my initial disgust and heartache, I decided that I was going to restore this car. Thus began a 4 year restoration project that is now complete. As anyone who rebuilds these great machines for a hobby knows, it is a painstaking process that involves countless hours of searching for parts online, consulting forums, and contributing to the good Dr.'s retirement account :) not to mention taking up space in your garage and becoming all to familiar with a floor jack and jack stands. So why undertake such an agonizing process? Because when you get one of these cars and you set it up right, it is one of the best pure driving experiences you can find. An experience that will put a smile on your face every time - not just because they handle like go karts or because in many ways they were ahead of their time, but because you are driving a unique piece of history that will cause people to stop, stare, smile, track you down in parking lots and give you the thumbs up no matter where you go.
I rebuilt this car with every intention of keeping it and perhaps passing it along to my son when he was old enough to drive. It was with those thoughts in mind that I took on every aspect of this build - no shortcuts, no cheese ball hacker patch-it and flip it scenarios. It is at the end of the day a car that I am extremely proud of. A car that is meant to be driven every day and enjoyed even if those drives take you to a car show or a track somewhere. It is a car that can be driven anywhere and enjoyed for many years with just the basic maintenance that these great machines require ( service that any reputable Porsche garage or do-it-yourselfer can easily manage). I have below a partial list of the work that I have done and the components that have been added or replaced. I will add more as time and my schedule allows. I have listed the obligatory 24 pictures here. I have over 200 more that you can find on Photobucket that shows the considerable detail that went in to this build. I will try and post the link later. Porsche 911 Targa leaks out ahead of Detroit debut
Mon, 13 Jan 2014With the doors of Cobo Center opening for the 2014 Detroit Auto Show this morning, Porsche is set to reveal its new 911 Targa in a matter of hours. But before it gets the chance, the first batch of images have already leaked out, courtesy of Chinese car site autohome.com.cn.
As expected, the new Targa appears to ditch the complex sliding glass roof panels that adorned recent versions of the semi-convertible 911 in favor of a more back-to-basics approach. An entirely removable roof panel opens up the sky, backed by a metallic B-pillar hoop in front of a large curved-glass rear window.
We'll have to wait just a little longer for the full scope of images and all the official details, but we're expecting the new Targa to carry most of the same technical specifications as the 991 on which it's based. Watch this space for more.
Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe vs Porsche Panamera Turbo S in unusual lux showdown
Fri, 07 Nov 2014We'll admit it, we're really looking forward to more time with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. Compared to other high-dollar luxury coupes - we're looking at you Bentley Continental GT - it's more stylish, easily more affordable, and since it's a Mercedes, lacks the sense of fragility that comes with a more exotic name plate.
Auto Express has taken a whack at reviewing the new two-door S-Class, and for some reason, the British mag is comparing it with a Porsche Panamera. Now, while comparing the looks of an S-Class Coupe and a Panamera is a bit like holding a beauty contest between Kate Upton and Medusa, this isn't as bizarre a pair as you might think, particularly when you opt for the high-dollar S63 AMG Coupe and the Panamera Turbo S.
The two offer similar power outputs from their force-induced V8s - 577 horsepower in the Benz and 570 horsepower in the Porsche - and are even similar in terms of interior and exterior dimensions. The S-Class actually has an extra inch between the axles and is 1.2 inches longer overall (it's also about 300 pounds heavier). In the cabin, the S-Class also has a tiny bit more rear legroom, with 33.4 inches to the Panamera's 33.3.
2015 Porsche Macan Turbo
Mon, 06 Jan 2014The misinformation first started back in May of 2007 - more than six years ago - when word came that Porsche was developing a compact utility vehicle to fill out its product line. Rumors swirled that the German automaker's future "Roxster" would be based on the then-upcoming Audi Q5. By September of 2010, the name had changed to "Cajun," but the vehicle was still expected to be "based heavily on the Audi Q5," said reports in the months that followed. One year later, the first test mules were spotted, the mechanics hidden beneath barely disguised Audi sheetmetal, which did nothing to give the upcoming model its own identity. And even after Porsche announced "Macan" as the vehicle's production name in early 2012, articles stated that it would "arrive on the same chassis as the Audi Q5, though with suspension, brake and engine tweaks suitable to the Porsche range."
It's no wonder that most still consider the all-new Porsche Macan nothing more than a heavily massaged Q5.
To help lift some of the mystery surrounding its latest release, Porsche hosted us in Germany for an in-depth look at its new crossover (while Europeans call it a "sport utility," its car platform allows us to call it a proper CUV). The technology workshop offered us insight to the design and mechanical execution, and it concluded with a short test ride. The trip was both enlightening and educational - and it left us with a whole new perspective on the Macan.
