1973 Porsche 914 2.0 "california Car" on 2040-cars
Coarsegold, California, United States
Regretfully I am going to have to sell my 914 project that I
have been working on for five years due to a career change and lack of
time. The car is 90% t0 95%
complete. My vision in this build was to
take a 914 and keep it true to its origins and increase the performance with
reliability and drivability. I wanted a car that had some of today’s creature
comforts that could be driven on a distant trip and then driven at a club event
for fun. With that in mind I wanted to keep the original 2.0 motor but make it
more powerful, efficient, and reliable.
I also wanted the car to be climate friendly. The engine has increased to a 2.1 liter using
a contemporary fuel injection system from CB Performance. It has 40mm throttle bodies and 25 lb.
injectors controlled by a computer that uses modern day sensors. It has been programmed by CB
Performance. One nice attribute is you
have the ability to hook up a laptop and connect with CP Performance as they
will tune the car from wherever you are located. A high pressure fuel pump along with an HEI
ignition system with an MSD control box was also installed. Stainless steel fuel lines run the distance
of the car from tank to motor. All new
hoses and fuel lines installed. Taylor wires installed. A new Bosch alternator
was installed. Larger pistons and barrels installed along with a strong Web cam
was installed. All new internals were
used including ARP rod bolts. The engine
is putting out somewhere between 140 and 150 hp. A new flywheel and HD six-spring clutch were
installed, the transmission is very smooth.
A new Bursch exhaust was installed. The car has been in California its whole life. I know one
owner had it from 1986 to 2008. He was
an active PCA member. The next owner had for a few months and planned to
restore it but changed his mind. I
purchased the car in 2009. It had the
steel flares and its only rust issue was in the rear driver corner of the rear
trunk due to a light seal. I had that
professionally replaced with new metal from Auto Atlanta. Other than that this is a rust-free car
including the battery tray area. I also
installed all new weather stripping on the entire car. The rear glass was removed, cleaned, and
properly resealed. A new heat shield was installed in the engine compartment. There are just a few pieces left (engine bay)
that need installing. The targa top has been completely resealed, painted, and
a new headliner has been installed. The paint is Mexico blue and is a great
Porsche color. It was originally Olympic
blue. The car will need to be repainted
as there are some flat spots, a crack on the rear trunk lid (see pic), a scrape on the front passenger fender (see pic), and mild orange peel. It looks good from a distance but a re-spray
is in order. The rear driver trunk hinge
broke (common on the 914 due to the stress from the trunk spring). I have the new hinge and a trunk shock kit
specific to the 914 to delete the trunk spring.
This should eliminate future broken trunk hinges. The suspension and brakes are very strong. The entire front end is from a 1988 Carrera
including the steering rack. Slotted and
cross drilled brakes were added, the calipers completely rebuilt and 140 lb.
rear springs. Stainless steel brake lines, new five lug rear discs, new pads
all the way around, a Weltmeister bump steer kit, a 911 master cylinder, turbo
tie rods, and Bilsteins at all four corners were added. I picked up some 16x6 and 16x7 Fuch wheels
from a 911 SC that fit nicely under the flairs. The car’s handling is really
amazing. The interior was covered with fat mat (similar to dynamat)
and new carpet was installed. The seats were reupholstered in vinyl and
cloth. I added a Momo steering wheel.
Dual stage s eat heaters were installed at the time and operate off the center
console. It came with a dealer installed
air conditioner. I had a 134 compressor
and update kit installed. It works great
and robs no power from the engine. I
also have all new heater hoses that need to be installed. The dash needs attention. I have the vinyl kit for the windshield area
but a cap should be purchased ($120) along with the radio area basket weave
($16-$29) to bring the interior back to pristine condition. I had custom made Lloyd floor matts that are
included. I have the rear view mirror
that needs to be remounted. A newer fuse
block was installed using blade fuses.
The wiring still needs to be sorted in this area. Everything worked on the car before the
installation except for the horn. I do
have the original horn but I don’t know if it works or not. Some of the lights
and gauges need to be sorted since the installation. I have shared all the information I could, the good
and the unfinished. I have spent over $12,000 on parts and $4000 on labor not
including the purchase of the car. I
have all receipts to verify this. I used
Pelican Parts and Auto Atlanta as my primary sources but I also used other
sources as needed. With the finishing
touches I indicated, this car will special.
I have the pink and it is currently on non-op. View “drive by” video on YouTube at: http://youtu.be/V-rlmlw5GBk I have more pics including the extras but could not load as eBay only allowed 24 pics. If you would like to view them, send me your email and I will send them to you.

Porsche 918 Spyder roars electric through London
Sun, Jun 29 2014The Porsche 918 Spyder can be an object of lust for anyone who appreciates the finer things in the automotive world, but for us greenies with penchant for speed, the car is an icon. This gorgeous, all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid offers 887 horsepower and 940 pound-feet of torque, can do 0-60 in just 2.5 seconds and is capable of 214 miles per hour. It lapped the Nurburgring in a record 6:57. Still, it is capable of near-silent, relaxed cruising through one of Europe's busiest cities. In a new video from Porsche, chief driving instructor Gordon Robertson takes the 918 to London and does just that. While driving in E-Power mode, he describes some of the things that make the car special, as well as how the technology has developed through the 911 GT3 R Hybrid and the 919 LMP1 car to eventually be passed onto the Panamera S E-Hybrid. If you're interested, you can learn more about the car in our own drive review, here. It's great to see, for the first time, the 918 Spyder driving alongside London's black cabs and double-decker buses. The rubbernecking from pedestrians is noticeable and completely understandable. I'm sure we'd all love to see this car come silently sneaking down our own city streets, but until Porsche makes that happen, you'll just have to enjoy the video below. Autoblog Podcast #344:
Porsche gives Nick Murray exactly what he deserved [w/video]
Sat, 19 Apr 2014The tale of Nick Murray and his lemon Porsche 911 appears to have come to a satisfactory end. As noted in the original story about Murray, he and Porsche Cars North America met and came to a resolution. However, we didn't know exactly what that meant, until now.
Murray has created a new video explaining that PCNA offered to buy back the car at full price or give him an exact replacement for it. This was exactly what he was asking for. Murray remains pro-Porsche in the new video. "I am definitely considering reordering a Porsche 911," he says.
Porsche also posted a message on its Facebook page that clarified the situation. "We at Porsche have always sought excellence in all that we do. We know you expect it of us. And when we don't meet that standard, we make every effort to improve," said a portion of the note.
