Sometimes less is more. As Porsche's original 356 Speedster, built between 1954 and 1957, was a less-expensive model and more a pure driver's car, so was the 1989 version. Built for USA only in Turbo body style which is one of the prettiest open top cars ever made by Porsche. In this club competition style body they were a appropriate addition with the wide racing tires and the short wraparound removable windscreen. Of course only the single layer light emergency folding top was offered.

The new Speedster had a long and difficult gestation, which began in 1983 with a stillborn prototype developed by Porsche's senior engineer, Helmuth Bott. The idea was revived by Porsche President Peter W. Schutz in 1986, who contributed to the design of a second concept Speedster on a 911SC platform. As an American, Schutz understood the potential appeal of such a car for the American club racing market, and in 1987, Porsche debuted a pre-production version at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Just as with the 356 Speedster, the 911 Speedster rapidly became collectible with only 830 ever offered in the USA. Only a handful now trade hands in a given year, and many of those are either modified or so low in mileage they can't be enjoyed. Ideally, one's new Speedster would have been carefully used, gently broken in, and well appointed, which is what one finds in this scintillating example. Rare optional air conditioning and a Blaupunkt stereo allow for gran turismo style touring. Of course all books, tools, spare, jack, etc. accompany sale of this car

217 bhp, 3,164 cc all-aluminum air-cooled SOHC flat six, DME Motronic 2 electronic fuel injection, five-speed manual transaxle, independent front suspension with McPherson struts, lower A-arms, torsion bars, and anti-roll bar, independent rear suspension with semi-trailing arms, transverse torsion bars and anti-roll bar, and four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with four-piston aluminum calipers. Wheelbase: 89.5 in.
  • The spirited, spiritual successor to the 356 Speedster
  • Optioned for the enthusiast, in extremely desirable and rare colors of white exterior and matching Fuchs wheels and gorgeous red leather interior
  • Low mileage and no modifications other than a period style amplifier which is easily removed.

Porsche celebrates 50 years of 911 with some excellent pics

Tue, 12 Feb 2013

The Porsche 911 is one of the most iconic sports cars of all time, and to celebrate the car's first 50 years, Porsche has released a stunning set of photos showing how far the 911 has come from the original back in 1963 to its current 991 generation. Unlike the recent 60-year photo spread that Chevrolet put together for the Corvette, though, Porsche's gallery only shows the original 911 and the current car.
Each time the 911 is redesigned, the car's front fenders, roofline and the shape of the side windows are key focal points. Even some of the interior cues have remained the same over the years, including the positioning of the ignition key on the left of the steering column and the five-gauge instrument cluster layout.
Scroll down for Porsche's press release breaking down the seven generations of the 911, and be sure to check out our gallery with plenty of high-res pics for you to download as a desktop wallpaper. In fact, we're providing these at 1920-pixels-wide instead of our usual 1280 wide. Enjoy!

Watch Larry Kosilla resurrect the finish of this barn-find 1966 Porsche 912

Thu, 25 Jul 2013

Larry Kosilla, the founder of the Ammo NYC line of car cleaning products, has his own show YouTube's Drive network - we saw his work before when he gave a Ferrari 288 GTO a two-day detailing job. On this episode, Kosilla gets called in to do his best with a 1966 Porsche 912, a car that was last registered in 1990 and recently found in a barn in Connecticut.
Among the expected dirt and cobwebs, the Irish Green Porsche is also covered what is assumed to be cat fur and "waste." The car is in such delicate condition, however, that Kosilla can't wash it for fear of getting more water in it than on it, so he has to steam and wipe the entire thing down before he begins the paint correction process. In addition to the thorough knowledge of his work and his ability to explain it simply, the episode is captioned with further information one of Porsche's popular but less regarded models, and how Kosilla does what he does.
You'll find a compelling 29 minute masterclass in the video below.

Porsche 918 Spyder already almost sold out?

Mon, 20 Oct 2014

Still planning on getting your hands on a Porsche 918 Spyder? You'd better act quickly, because word has it that the hybrid hypercar is nearly sold out.
While Porsche has reportedly only delivered a little over 30 of the 918 examples of the Spyder it plans to manufacture in total, Automotive News says that production is sold out through late March or early April - just a few months shy of when production is set to wrap in July.
That's pretty impressive for a car with a base price of almost $850,000, especially one requiring a $200,000 deposit just to get your name on the list. Still, that sum is significantly less than its competitors get for the McLaren P1 or LaFerrari, both of which sell for over a million (if you can actually get on one at that price), though in fairness, production of each is limited to less than half of the 918 Spyder.
