What is offered for sale is a 1964 model year Porsche 356 C restoration project.  This California car was built in 1964,yet was titled as a 1965 model.  The car is equipped with the original numbers matching 1600C engine and 4-speed transmission.  Engine number is 713870. Tranny number is 79313.  The original color of the car is believed to be Grey, with a red interior.  The body is completely stripped to bare metal, and treated with a rust inhibitor.

The car was sidelined by an accident with a forklift at least 30 years ago (pre-1985), and has been a restoration project ever since.  Prior to 1985, the damaged car was disassembled for repair and restoration.  The second and third owners attempted to repair the damaged right fender and door without the benefit of replacement panels, and failed to complete the repairs.  The fourth owner acquired the car about 4 years ago, and commenced a complete bare-metal restoration of the body, which disclosed prior damage to the front of the car that was not properly sorted out and repaired.  To repair this damage, a heavy gauge replacement front nose clip was obtained from Trevor's, which is included with the sale.  In addition, replacement panels were acquired to replace damaged or rusted areas of the car, including the front clip, front battery tray, front structural members, a complete body floor pan, and a right front fender skin.

The body was sandblasted completely, and a clear rust inhibitor applied.  Existing bondo was removed from the areas of the right front fender, right door, and right door pillar.  The floor pan was rusted out and removed.  Replacement panels were acquired for the floor pan area, are not installed, and are included with the sale.  The front lower valance bodywork was damaged and rusted, and the nose had prior damage that had been poorly repaired. A Trevor's brand replacement front nose clip was acquired to sort out the front end bodywork, has not been installed and is included with the sale.

The 1600C engine and 741 transmission were inspected, serviced and repaired by Porsche specialist David Loop of Monterey, California.  The engine and transmission were in good condition according to Mr. Loop, who also installed new 2nd and 3rd gear synchros in the transmission.

A set of 15" fuchs alloys with center caps are included with the sale.  They were acquired by a prior owner to replace the original steel wheels, which are no longer available.  The tires are old and need to be replaced.

The windshield glass, both door windows, both door vent pieces and one rear quarter window are included.  Apparently lost over time are the rear window glass, and one rear quarter window glass panel, which are not included in the sale.  The interior door and trim panels, the rear seats, and both bumpers are missing and not included in the sale.

The gas tank has been treated with rust inhibitor and restored.  Much of the chrome has been replaced or re-chromed.  New rubber seals were acquired and are included.  All gauges are original and appear still functional.  The heater boxes and related sheet metal are complete and functional.

A total of 67 high resolution photos of the car can be seen here:  <a href="link"> link </http://www.flickr.com/photos/baremetalbathtub>

During the 10-day duration of the auction, the car can be inspected in Monterey, California, by appointment.

The body is situated on a custom dolly and casters for ease of movement and restoration, and it is included in the sale.

Numbers matching 356's are getting harder to find every day, which is no surprise when one considers the astounding prices being paid for restored examples.  Isn't it time for you to have one?  After all, you deserve it, right?

There's a Porsche Cayman under here somewhere

Wed, 15 Jan 2014

What we have here is the work of Dubai tuner Royal Customs that is controversial even beyond its styling. The Middle East aftermarket house says it spent fourteen months developing a bodykit for the Porsche Cayman, and the results seem to be aimed at those who wish their coupe were a 918 Spyder - the nose, strake-filled and widened rear fender, carbon fiber wing and massive diffuser all cribbing some from Stuttgart's new hybrid supercar.
Even without a buyer, the Alpha One Concept is already controversial. When WorldCarFans posted on the Royal Customs car recently, German tuner Alpha-N Performance wrote in alleging that the Dubai package copies their design from two years ago, which was also called the Alpha One, a design with which it's clear the Dubai Alpha One shares numerous cues. We asked Royal Customs about its relationship to the Alpha One car, we were told, "Yes, there is a lot we can say about the remarkable similarities all of which will be explained by our press release by Mr. Emil from Autogespot. Please wait for the official release and you will have the full exciting story. It's an 'actual success story' and not a 'replication' story."
The response is referring to an "extensive report" on the car coming out of Autogespot. Royal Customs doesn't have the Alpha One Concept on its site yet, so we're still missing quite a few details on it, such as whether the Porsche engine has been given a similarly 918-ish workover. We do know that the company says each car takes 30 days to build and it will only build three of them, which is a number that should satisfy any haters and, even more so, its buyers. You can decide which side of the fence you're on by having a close look at it in the gallery above.

Here's how to follow this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans

Thu, Jun 11 2015

In the pantheon of motorsports, the 24 Hours of Le Mans stands as one of the great endurance challenges to man and machine. This year's event in France already looks to be one for the ages with Porsche setting record-breaking times in practice and the competition debut of Nissan's front-engine, hybrid racer. Thankfully, there's a massive list of ways to follow this automotive attraction. Reilly Brennan, the Executive Director of the Revs Automotive Research Program at Stanford University, and a friend of Autoblog, has once again assembled a helpful couch-kit to organize many of the options. Unfortunately, the old-school way of just turning on the television might be the most frustrating way to watch Le Mans this year. Fox Sports 1 and 2 are carrying about half the race, but the coverage bounces between them seemingly at random. The broadcast begins on Fox Sports 2 at 8:30 AM Eastern ahead of the 9:00 AM start and lasts there until 12:00 PM. Things don't pick up again until 7:00 PM Eastern on Fox Sports 1 for an hour, and the channels swap back and forth more from there. The Fox Sports Go streaming app offers more, but even it stops showing the race a few times. Thankfully, streaming Le Mans is easy. If you can't dedicate 24-hours on the couch, Radio Le Mans lets you listen to audio commentary anywhere with some of the best announcers in the biz. The Automobile Club de l'Ouest, the governing body for the race, also offers an official video stream in an app for $9.99. For a really low-tech solution, the official Twitter is another choice. Brennan is keeping his list updated with coverage changes. You can also check out and download the spotter's guide (from Nissan) in the gallery above. Enjoy this year's race. If you miss anything, don't worry; expect a full report from Autoblog. In fact, editor-in-chief Mike Austin is attending Le Mans this year, so follow him on Twitter for on-the-fly impressions.
