1964 Porsche 356C Coupe

For most Porsche lovers, the 356 SC/GT is nearly a myth: with all six lightweight production road racers all delivered to the same Northern California dealer, few have ever seen one, let alone owned one. One of a series of special, low-production 356s built by the factory to appeal to niche buyers, these few SC/GTs are generally in long-term 356 collections, making acquiring one a challenge. On top of that, the near-half-million-dollar expense takes them off the road in general.
The ideal SC/GT is one that enjoys all the benefits of the car, somehow avoiding the inevitable angst in driving one on the road, which led to the expert recreation offered from the Robert Rathe Porsche Collection. As with all SC/GTs, it uses a GT bodyshell, with lightweight aluminum doors, boot and bonnet hand crafted by noted expert Mark Barton at The Panel Shop. Plexiglass side and rear windows are also correct for an SC/GT. One of the model’s other distinguishing features was an unusually well-trimmed interior, here recreated with Black leather GT seats by Autos International, together with a factory roll bar kit and 80-liter competition gas tank.
Body and interior made it a GT, so the 1600 engine needed to be SC-spec. A type-616/16 SC engine includes three-piece cast aluminum crankcase, special bearings, sodium-filled valves, Ferral cylinders and host of other modifications for 95 HP at 5,500 RPM. This rebuilt engine includes twin Solex carburetors and snorting GT exhaust – an intoxicating combination on track or on road.
Completed in low-maintenance two-stage Silver over a Black and Silver interior, this is a unique opportunity to experience the high-performance, low-weight SC/GT in a wonderfully executed package.

Drive-up bank robbery perpetrated with Cayenne and WRX

Sat, 14 Sep 2013

Thieves carried out what appears to be a movie-script-perfect robbery of a bank in Sydney, Australia early on Friday morning, using two stolen high-performance vehicles in the process.
At around 11:15 AM local time, in near mid-day light, reports say that two men in masks smashed into the side of a Westpac bank in a confirmed-stolen black Porsche Cayenne. The perpetrators were armed with sledgehammers according to witness reports, and took only about five minutes to take what they were after inside of the bank.
The rapid getaway was executed in a Subaru WRX, also confirmed as a stolen vehicle, while witnesses snapped camera phone images of the illicit goings on. One Twitter user posted a few of the images to his social media feed; you can take a look at them in our small gallery below. Follow on down for the full video report, from The Sydney Morning Herald.

Can a Corvette really be compared to a 911 with options costing more than the Chevy?

Wed, 29 Jan 2014

In this latest video from Drive, Chris Harris asks straight away, "Can you still compare a base Corvette to a Porsche Carerra?" That's an particularly interesting question in this film, as the 911 in question is a 400-horsepower Carrera S model that's been fitted with $60,000 in options. Base price of a Corvette Stingray? $51,995. Harris' tester features an automatic and some other goodies that push it right up to that $60,000 range. So yes, the options on the Porsche cost as much as this entire 460-hp Chevrolet.
Harris stresses that this isn't a full review, but he does exercise both cars in a more composed manner before reverting to his traditionally exuberant driving style. The impressions are, as always, spot on, with Harris favoring the pointy nature and V8 power of the Stingray, while enjoying the gearbox (Porsche's exceptional PDK transmission) and just about everything else on the 911.
Take a look below for the latest video from Drive, and let us know if you agree with Mr. Harris' views on these two sports cars.

1949 Gm?nd Porsche shows the birth of an icon

Fri, 21 Mar 2014

The Austrian village of Gmünd is more than just difficult to pronounce; it's also the birthplace of the Porsche brand. Before the company ever started building sports cars at its current home base near Stuttgart, the fledgling business completed several vehicles in the tiny town in Southern Austria. In this video, former Pikes Peak International Hill Climb champion Jeff Zwart takes a look at a 1949 Gmünd coupe to see how the company has evolved since its earliest days.
The thing to note about the Gmünd-built Porsches is their absolute design simplicity. The phrase "form follows function" gets bandied around a lot, but it really means something when you look at these early cars. However, the minimalism was partially out of necessity. The vehicles were meant to be sporty but certainly weren't rockets. Power came courtesy of a modified Volkswagen Beetle engine, and anything extraneous would have slowed the models down. Scroll down to watch Zwart go back in time to Porsche's beginnings.
