Up for sale is my Porsche 356B Cabriolet Vintage Race Car. This car was raced from the late 1980's through the early 2000's.

The car has a bit of an interesting story with it. I was working at a shop in central PA in the 80's, when a customer who was an obvious drug dealer, had the car amongst his collection of MB's, Jags and muscle cars. Someone had stripped the car to the bare metal and then left it sitting that way in his warehouse. When the Feds busted him, the old Porsche was the only car they didn't want. Our shop was a kind of middle man between the Feds and another customer of ours who was interested in getting into the relatively new vintage racing scene. Our customer bought it and had it restored mechanically. The floors, rockers, door bottoms and all rusted areas were cut away and repaired with replacement panels. It was then shipped to Black Forest Engineering in Decatur, GA for race prep. I was his traveling mechanic and later co-driver in the enduro events with SVRA and HSR. After using BFE for a few years, the car was later sent to the very successful Ecurie Engineering based in Milwaukee for engine, transmission, and suspension preparation. In the mid-90's, my customer's life took a different direction and I bought the car from him. I continued to race the car until around 2001 when the pressures of a growing family, etc. ended my racing and I put the car in storage.

The car is all steel and all body panels have the matching serial number stamped into them. That being said, all 356 race cars have a bit of bondo in them to make them pretty after many years of competition. There is NO rust anywhere. Please see the photos for a better description. The engine was originally built by Ecurie Engineering and has been freshened by me once. The engine is now at 24 hours of run time and should be rebuilt before being entered into competition. The engine starts and runs with no issues. I've blasted it up and down my road a few times recently! Likeweise, the seat and seat belt harness are too old for current competition and would have to be replaced. The transmission is the typical 356 racing gearbox with 1st gear removed and a BEBA gearset. The GT limited slip differentials were just coming onto the scene when I stopped racing the car. This trans has a locked differential (spool). The ring & pinion ratio is 7.31:1. There is a 10 gallon ATL fuel cell and all Aeroquip-style plumbing for oil & fuel. The fuel pump is new. The windshield frame was cut off for a low racing-style lexan windscreen, but I have the original windshield frame that was removed. It can easily be reattached. There also is a hardtop to the car that has been disassembled (see photos). Other features are a mechanical tach converted to Carrera specs with an 8000 RPM face, on-board fire suppression system, Wright -4 degree front spindles, adjustable rear spring plates, larger rear torsion bars, Solex 40-P11 carbs with 38mm venturi's, and 4-wheel disc brakes with Porterfield pads. I have just rebuilt the calipers, replaced the rotors and replaced the master cylinder (911 part). The sale includes one set of (4) Fuchs 15x6 wheels. Also, I have a few boxes of spare parts to include.
Considering the cost of any of the open 356's, this car could also be a relatively easy restoration back into a street car.
NOTE: I do NOT have a title to the car! Ebay took away the "other" option for titles, so I could only pick one of the options listed. I have only a bill-of-sale for the car. That is how the Federales sold it to my customer, and that is how it was sold to me. I will provide a notarized bill-of-sale to the winning bidder, but can assist in obtaining a title certificate if needed. A pre-purchase inspection is advised and encouraged. I want anyone interested in the car to know exactly what they are getting. I have nothing to hide. I have been an ebay member for over 10 years and have 100% feedback with over 600 reporting. Please call Greg Smith with any questions at 540-270-4955.

Malaise Era All-Stars

Fri, 17 May 2013

A few weeks ago, we bid a fond happy 40th anniversary to the automotive dark ages of 1973-84 that have come to be known as "The Malaise Era" - the performance ice-age when 160 horsepower was a lot and a 0-60 time of under 10 seconds was remarkable. Like music in the 1980s, everything in automobiledom didn't suck, however. There were a few bright spots. Here are five of our favorites:

Supercar 'Holy Trinity' raced at the track, drag strip, and to 186 mph

Thu, Dec 3 2015

There was a time when we weren't sure if we'd ever get the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder on the track together. Now, we've have a multi-part series dissecting how each supercar approaches all kinds of go-fast tasks. Supercar Driver (SCD) looks at their performances around the track, on the drag strip, and on a runway. SCD didn't get any help from the automakers, it used three cars all owned by one British gentleman, Paul Bailey. The first video has British Touring Car Championship driver Mat Jackson running all three around Silverstone. The second video takes the coupes to Santa Pod Raceway to run the quarter-mile. The third video runs them out to Bruntingthorpe Airfield for a drag race to 300 kilometers per hour (186 mph). We found that latter video especially interesting because SCD shows a graph of how fast each car hit speed marks, and it's interesting to see where the winner made up all of its time and the where the third-place getter lost its time. Nota bene, the McLaren is using its fly-paper sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires. You'll find the first video in the series above, the second two videos below. If you still haven't had enough, then check out the Hyper 5 three-part series by Alejandro Solomon filmed at California's Thermal Raceway, starting with the Holy Trinity and adding the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and Pagani Huayra. Chris Harris also did fantastic work around Portimao with the help of Marino Franchitti and Tiff Needell, with assistance from the factories. This content is hosted by a third party. Watch Porsche's 918 Spyder break a sweat while hot weather testing

Wed, 19 Jun 2013

With five months left until the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder enters production, Porsche engineers are still putting the hybrid sports coupe through a battery of last-minute tests. To give us new reasons to ogle over the car - as if we needed any more - Porsche has released a short video showing the 918 Spyder undergoing shakedown tests in the hot Nevada desert. And you can't drive through Nevada without visiting Vegas, too, right?
Although there's really nothing new to see in this video, it's still fun to watch as Porsche approaches one million test miles logged on this exciting new high-performance model. One interesting part (at around the 0:37 mark) shows the car taking off under electric power and then transitioning to engine power, which results in a mix of whirs and growls as the 918 Spyder switches from a 127-horsepower electric vehicle to an 887-hp hybrid supercar. Scroll down to watch - and hear - Porsche's latest creation in motion.
