1960 Porsche 356b Base 1.6l on 2040-cars
Gloucester, Massachusetts, United States
Porsche 356 B with matching numbers engine*. An original vehicle
in need of a complete restoration. This is my fourth such restoration 356 that I have
owned. I have restored some fully
and others partially, but all the others have now been sold (when the body is
painted, people will start enquiring – and the offers will flow until you receive
one that you just can’t refuse! – that’s been my experience). I no longer possess the time and
inclination to complete this last one, due to the birth of my twins. This
vehicle epitomizes the classic Porsche style and quality of yesteryear. The quintessential Porsche for every
collector, and a necessary addition to any real car collection. This particular vehicle will require rust restoration in the usual places for these vehicles, but there is a lot of life left in her, and the thick paint has protected a lot of the outside panels.
This is the iconic sports car that started the Porsche Company
and its racing legacy. If you would like to have a car that will continue
to appreciate in value and be useable as an every day dependable and fun
vehicle to drive, while only sipping gasoline, this may be the vehicle for you.
The continuous rise in the price of these iconic vehicles guarantees
that you will have made a sound automotive investment that will pay you
dividends for years to come. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche the 356 has always been popular with both the public
and the motoring press. In 2004, Sports Car International
ranked the 356 tenth on their list
of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s. Today, the Porsche 356 is a highly regarded collector
car. Thousands of owners worldwide maintain the 356 traditions, preserving
their cars and driving them regularly. The US-based 356 Registry on its website
states that it is "...world's largest classic Porsche club."
Classic Porsches in general, and the 356 in particular were meant to be
driven by drivers who possessed real skill and ability. They sold to those who desired and coveted
the hand made quality of true craftsman, and they were built in limited numbers. Unlike today’s cookie cutter computer
controlled cars that are built to appeal to the largest segment of the
population possible, these appealed to drivers, real drivers and connoisseurs. They have never been cheap, and will
never be cheap to buy, but they are easy to own – German engineering and Bosch electrical
components. The new corporate approach
for Porsche vehicles is a response to market surveys. Whereas the original
Porsches were meant to be driven by real drivers and win races, new Porsches
are designed to be driven by everyone and anyone who can afford the price of
admission. With all their gadgetry and gimmicks, they make a bad driver look
good, and a good driver look great.
Personally, I would prefer to see this go to an individual who will
restore it themselves, as I planned, but considering the make, model and the current
market, I understand and accept that it likely will be snapped up by a
collector or professional restorer.
*The gentlemen I purchased the vehicle from represented that it is the original engine from the factory; I have not verified it with Porsche. Sold as is where is with no express or implied warranty of fitness for any particular purpose. |

eGarage video features Helmuth Bott's personal Porsche 959 prototype
Fri, 12 Apr 2013"We thought we were going to build a super-911," said Peter Schutz, former CEO of Porsche AG of the development of the Porsche 959. That was before it started getting expensive. At that point, Helmuth Bott, Porsche R&D director got frightened. Costs ballooned because of the all-wheel drive, sequential turbocharging and other technology Porsche had never even thought about when it set out to build a 911 to compete in Group B. Schutz continued, "The amount of resources we were committing got totally out of hand." Instead of pulling the plug, Bott doubled down and drew on the strength of his brilliant team to build a car whose impact is still echoing aross the industry.
"It's probably one of our most prized possessions" says Don Leatherwood, Director of the Brumos collection where Dr. Bott's personal prototype resides, and where Frazer Spowart went to see the car and create a video for eGarage. Check out the sights and sounds of the 959 before it was the 959, and get personal takes on the car from Hurley Haywood, Peter Schutz and Don Leatherwood. Keep reading to see the video.
McLaren boss' exclusive Porsche 935 Street is worth three 911 Turbos
Wed, 21 May 2014McLarens may be exclusive, but there are still hundreds - if not thousands - of people out there who can say they own one. Mansour Ojjeh is one of them, but he doesn't just own a McLaren - he owns McLaren. As in, the company that makes the racing and exotic supercars. Or 25 percent of it, anyway. As the head of Techniques d'Avant Garde, Ojjeh is one of the British outfit's largest shareholders, previously having owned Heuer watches (before selling it to luxury giant LVMH) and engineered Porsche's most successful foray into Formula One - winning the world drivers' championship three times in a row and the constructors' title twice with Alain Prost and Niki Lauda behind the wheel of McLarens with Porsche engines developed and branded by TAG.
In short, he probably could get any McLaren he wanted at the drop of a hat, but also had strong ties to Porsche in the 80s, and this is the car he wanted. It's called the Porsche 935 Street, and it's the only one ever made. Inspired by the 935 racer that won Le Mans and over 120 other races, Ojjeh contracted Porsche Exclusive when it was still in its infancy to make him one for the road. So they took a 930 bodyshell, slotted in the 3.3-liter turbo flat-six from the 934 but cranked output up to 375 horsepower, and gave it the brakes, suspension, BBS wheels and wide-body aero from the 935 racer. They painted it a deep metallic red and trimmed the interior with cream leather and wood veneer.
When all was said and done, a total of 550 modifications were performed, detailed on a seventeen-page invoice and costing as much as three new 911 Turbos at the time. Ojjeh only put 12,000 miles on the odometer, running up and down the French Riviera, and has now put it up for sale at the upcoming Bonhams auction at Spa where it's tipped to fetch upwards of 300,000 euros - equivalent to $410k at today's rates, or, once again, the price of about three new 911 Turbos.
2015 Porsche Cayenne GTS proves performance is relative
Thu, Nov 20 2014The Turbo may be the most powerful model in the Cayenne range, but the GTS is arguably the enthusiast's choice. (In so far as a 4,500-pound crossover can be considered an "enthusiast's choice," anyway.) And now, after refreshing the rest of the Cayenne lineup, Porsche has revealed the new Cayenne GTS, alongside its new 911 GTS stablemate, here at the LA Auto Show. Like the new Cayenne S, the new GTS drops the previous version's atmospheric V8 for a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6, but ups the output to 440 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque to propel Zuffenhausen's portliest to 62 in a scant 5.2 seconds. Alongside the power upgrade, the GTS gets a lowered air suspension and sportier exhaust, the beefier brakes from the Cayenne Turbo and an upgraded aero kit to help with the whole barn-door-profile thing. Just don't expect all that extra kit and the prestige of a Porsche badge on your crossover to come cheap, with prices starting at $95,500 (plus $995 destination).
