This 1960 Porsche 356B 1600S Roadster was purchased by the late Bill Hallack in 1969. Bill was a long term member of the 356 Registry and was an excellent mechanic. Many of his “Porsche buddies” in West Michigan benefited from his expertise and talents… always freely given. When Bill purchased the car 45 years ago, he was on active duty in the Air Force. He bought it from a Captain at the Grand Forks, ND air base where they served. Bill and the Captain were both active in local sports car racing and that hobby is where Bill honed his exceptional mechanical skills. As a result, this car runs extremely well and is very solid throughout. No shake, rattle or roll with this gem! The car comes with a Porsche COA with the following information: Vehicle ID: 87000 Model / Year / Type: 1960 356 1600S roadster Engine Number: 84973 616/2 Transmission: 32884 741/1 Exterior Paint Color/ / Code: Ivory 6004 (now a very pale yellow) Interior Material Color / Type: Red Leatherette (now black) An honest description of the car and its current condition follows: The car has never been wrecked. It was restored in the mid-1990’s but still presents itself in a driven but excellent condition. Bill drove the car with a “bra” which protected the front end since the restoration. He and his wife Linda attended numerous 356 Registry events on the East Coast, Southeast and Mid-West over the years. Per owner, this car retains the original floors, longitudinals and even battery box. Stored in heated and air conditioned garage and truly babied. I just learned from an old friend of Bill's that the front fenders were modified to look like 550 Spyder lines prior to Bill purchasing the car in 1969.This is the only metal that is not as delivered from the factory. This was NOT done due to a wreck.Price reduced to reflect cost of correcting front wheel arch openings Linda Hallack has asked me (Doug McDonnell) to help her sell this beautiful car. From 1969 until his passing in January of this year, Bill Hallack was the only person who ever drove the car. Starting this spring, the owner’s son and I have periodically “exercised” the car. Body panel gaps are good, but not perfect. Hood gaps are OK but not what they should be (could be adjusted). No evidence of rust, but just in front of the driver’s door there are a very few "bubbles" in an area about the size of the tip of your finger apparently due to a paint prep issue in this area. Bill said that the bubbles have not worsened since they first appeared shortly after the restoration. The car is NOT numbers matching. The current engine was rebuilt and installed about 1- 1/2 years ago and is low mileage. Current odometer reading turned 88,889 today and will go up a small amount since the car is occasionally driven. This is the true mileage since new! More photos and a video of the engine running are available. Can be seen by appointment only, is located in Gull Lake, Michigan. Please contact me with any questions or to arrange for an inspection. PPI’s are encouraged and welcome. Please ask any and all questions, they will be answered quickly and honestly. Bra sheepskin seat covers and 5 original wheels are included in sale. I reserve the right to sell outside auction as car is also advertised elsewhere.
On Sep-08-14 at 16:04:30 PDT, seller added the following information: Although Bill always said that the car had never been in an accident(and his widow confirms none since purchase in 1969) When I had the car on a lift 9/8/14 for underside photos,I think there is "rippling" of inner fender that is lateral wall of trunk on the passengers side. However I am not a bodyman, just son of a mechanic. Fender itself shows no sign of damage and passes refrigerator magnet test. Also when I drove the car today on the recommendation of a noted 356 restorer I put my finger on the rear door gap while going over bumps. No pinched finger! |

Auto journalist ordered to pay big money for blowing up Porsche 917 engine [UPDATE]
Tue, 22 Jan 2013Racecars blow engines all the time, but a Porsche 917 isn't just a run-of-the-mill racecar. British automotive writer Mark Hales reportedly borrowed a 917 from 82-year-old former Formula One racer David Piper for a magazine article, and mechanical tragedy ensued. Nobody is arguing that the engine failed after being spun to 8,200 rpm. However, Hales was warned not to exceed 7,000 rpm, says owner Piper, and the affair landed in English courts with Piper seeking £50,000 - over $79,000 US - in reimbursement funds for an engine rebuild and loss of use of the car while it was being repaired. Judge Simon Brown ruled in favor of car owner Piper, putting Hales on the hook for £110,000 ($174,000) including legal fees - a whole lot of money in any language.
Hales says the Porsche suffered a mechanical fault while lapping that allowed it to slip out of gear and over-rev. Piper wasn't convinced, and sought to have the repair paid for by the guy who broke the racer, saying "If you bend it, you mend it." It's not like Hales is a novice driver, having seat time in both professional and amateur races over 30 years, notching about 150 wins, but even the best drivers sometimes miss a shift, and that's what Piper contended happened to his car.
According to reports, Hales has had to sell most of his valuables to pay his lawyers and is now facing bankruptcy with the ruling against him. Members of the Pistonheads website are trying to coordinate a collection to help him out, as well.

Genesis cars win accolades, offer value — so why are sales so bad?
Tue, Jul 31 2018My high-school buddy Brent Cormier was so smitten with the Genesis G80 when he saw it at an event I hosted at SXSW in 2016 he bought a used 2013 Hyundai Genesis a short time later and fell in love with the car. "It surpasses my every expectation," said Cormier, a self-described "renaissance man" who owns and runs a real estate agency with his wife Laura, is a food service executive chef and part owner of Austin-based Thin the Herd Guitars. "I was locked into Mercedes and Audi for 10 years," he added. "And felt trapped in an endless pit of maintenance costs." After owning the Genesis over the past two years — including using it as an Uber and Lyft driver to earn extra cash — Cormier learned what some frugal luxury sedan buyers and a handful of car reviewers have discovered: Genesis offers great bang for the buck compared to other premium brands and can compete with the best in terms of performance, features and comfort. Hyundai's luxury brand also earned a prominent third-party endorsement last week when for the first time Genesis topped J.D. Power's 2018 APEAL study, surpassing German luxury-performance icon Porsche. The APEAL study (which stands for Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout) "measures owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement across 77 attributes," ranging from performance to comfort, and asks nearly 68,000 owners of new 2018 models to score vehicles on a 1,000-point scale. In its second year ranked as a stand-alone brand, Genesis earned an APEAL score that bumped it up 15 points to 884 and helped push it past Porsche — and past BMW, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Cadillac, Land Rover and Lexus, in order of ranking. Last month, Genesis also topped J.D. Power's Initial Quality Survey (IQS) for the first time this year. And both its models were awarded Top Safety Pick Plus ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, among 11 Plus ratings in all for Korean vehicles. Despite high J.D. Power rankings and great reviews, Genesis U.S. sales were off 50 percent for the first six months of 2018 compared to 2017, and in June Genesis sold only 796 vehicles — the first time U.S. numbers dropped below 1,000 in a month. Part of Genesis's APEAL and IQS success can be attributed to its small product lineup: just two models, the G80 and G90 sedans, with a third, the 2019 G70, launching later this year. And while those numbers may help in J.D.
